  • Join our weekly Combat Check-In Newsletter (www.combatstory.com/newsletter) to get a short email from Ryan for people who love and support our veterans, service members, and their families. It has info on a significant event in military and/or intel history, a funny military joke, an update on a current event I'm following, something I'm doing that week in my life, a book I'm reading, a look at an upcoming interview, a reflection on a past episode and more
Jeff Depatie is a retired Canadian Special Operations Forces JTF2 sniper and assaulter. For those who aren’t familiar, JTF2 is Canada’s Tier 1 military force (tinyurl.com/ac48x7c5). Jeff deployed multiple times, both as an infantryman in the regular Canadian forces and again as a member of the elite JTF2.
After leaving the military, Jeff created a company called The Special Forces Experience (tinyurl.com/4kkc6n3n), which is a highly tailored process designed for men who have achieved their own version of excellence but want to know how far they can really push their limits. Jeff shared that this is such a demanding experience that one of the recent courses didn’t successfully graduate any of the candidates!
In this episode, we dive into some of Jeff’s combat experiences and also spend time hearing Jeff draw on lessons learned from the Tier 1 military community and all the research that’s gone into creating the Special Forces Experience surrounding human performance.

Good morning Sir, I left on a comment on the page about how proud I am to be a fellow Canadian like yourself but also how you inspired me to follow in your foot steps. Im a little late to the game but I will become a Pathfinder or JTF2. I will never allow my body relfect my age. I am a warrior and always have been.
I learned from my father CQB with MP5s when I was 6 years old. Even his fellow officers on TAC said these words. Ill clear a room with that kid.
Your school in Colorado has even inspired my family to do the samething but im sure your knowledge and tactics are far more advanced.
Thank you not only for your service but the honor you have brought to this country.

I’m an American living in Northern Alberta for the last 10 years. -40f = -40c and it’s REAL! I’ve been on the lake ice fishing when the temps dropped from -5f to -30f in an hour and things got sketchy real quick. Fortunately the sleds started but the cold at speed dropped to -60f wind chill and I had 3 kids with me. We did make it back to the truck without losing a single toe or finger, BUT it was harsh to say the least!
Regarding Airborne, Canada has an Army Cadets program where summer camp is a big deal. One camp for the 17-18yo kids is Airborne camp. The kids go through the full blown Airborne training, including all of the static line jumps, and if they successfully complete the camp, they are awarded real Airborne wings. If they later enlist, they take the wings with them and it stays with them throughout their career. A friend’s son was one of 2 in his basics with their wings. Pretty cool.
I do not have a military background, nor do I claim to be an authority. Just some of what I’ve experienced.

We were in Afghanistan way before 2013 dipshit...and as far as I know we didn't come begging for help from your 12 tanks or 10 combat aircraft - just how would we have coped all those years without the mighty Canadian military? You pulled out of Afghanistan in 2014 but left a skeleton crew in Iraq under the guise of "Trainers". Your wimpy, Liberal media called the killing of Sulamani "an illegal assassination", I wonder what they called what he was responsible for? Public opinion and news media in Canada didn't see the merits of the conflict in the Middle East and that's why you withdrew. Again, you have to respect those who lost their life, but don't get it twisted - WE DIDN'T REALLY NEED YOU TO FIGHT THERE, AND WE STILL DON'T NEED YOU TO JOIN ANY FIGHT. WE'RE IN... I and fellow Canadians have a proud hertiage for our military and I know for a fact JTF2 has not losted one man in over 20 years. Also, the longest confirm kill is made by a JTF2 sniper with a TAC. 50.

Turned me onto yoga because how can yoga be gay or not good for the body if this guy that can do 90 pound lat raises/fly's, and was s tier special forces does it. "Gun Control"- Looking at this through the lens of a retired Canadian Paratrooper, taking my black rifles is a huge slap in the face. What I mean by that, the federal government had no issue with me deploying all over God's green earth but calls me a criminal if I refuse to turn in my AR's (and many other long rifles, the bill even make air rifles illegal). As a veteran, just the thought of not having my rifles, locked away safe and trigger locked, gives me peace in mind. Even if they only see the range, not having them raises a little bit of concern. Most firearm crimes are committed with pistols... going after long rifles doesn't make sense and that's what scares me.
    .
To put this in scope, Canadians that "posses" a restricted PAL are note the criminals, they are likely the highest vetted civilians in any county.

      CAF member here.
Members definitely use the terms tier one and two.
From a organizational standpoint, not really, especially for the tier two term. CSOR gets really butthurt about being called tier two. CSOR and JTF2 have a contentious relationship and don’t like to think of themselves as JTF2’s little brother. This is sort of fair because CSOR is highly capable and there is cross pollination between all CANSOF units through the respective Task Forces ie JTF2, CSOR, CJIRU, and 427 might all have members forming a particular task force and work together.
