- Join our weekly Combat Check-In Newsletter (www.combatstory.com/newsletter) to get a short email from Ryan for people who love and support our veterans, service members, and their families. It has info on a significant event in military and/or intel history, a funny military joke, an update on a current event I'm following, something I'm doing that week in my life, a book I'm reading, a look at an upcoming interview, a reflection on a past episode and more.
Today we hear the Combat Story of Kevin Flike, a former Green Beret and Purple Heart recipient who served multiple deployments, including two to Afghanistan.
Kevin was shot in the abdomen during his second deployment and took years recovering from the associated physical and emotional scars and has shown that it is possible to not only fully recover from such an injury, but to thrive.
He is a graduate of the MIT Sloan School of Management and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, sits on the Board of Directors at the Green Beret Foundation, is a sought out motivational speaker, and shares his story of perseverance through a blog and outreach series called Wounded by War, which includes a documentary on his recovery.
Kevin was recommended to me by Beau Wise, a former guest on the show who lost two of his brothers to the war in Afghanistan, one of whom knew Kevin. Kevin and Beau have become like brothers. I hope you enjoy this inspiring insight from the brink of death to tremendous success as much as I did.

Holy hell... I wasn't expecting his story to start out like it did... "first time going live with my team was in Afghanistan. First time hearing them on coms was in Afghanistan. Learned to reload the 50... Down range with my team in Afghanistan."
His description of war is the most honest one I’ve heard.
My favorites are always the delta, green berets, rangers interview, there was something that's speaks volume about their lives.and oh my favorite of all is John "sherk" McPhee who have done all that.
Keep it up Ryan 💯💯💯
I found Ryan on Spotify and realized it was better to watch them on CZcams and I gotta agree with you on John “Shrek” being the best one. They had such a good talk both times that I was able to take a lot of life advice from. Not to mention the humor of him!
Dale Comstock is a really knarly dude more than the guy you talk about!!!!! Dale is a crazy baddass so is Shrek but Dale is crazier in my opinion!!!!
I just found this podcast and I can't stop watching. I'm about to get medically retired myself and there's been some helpful information on transitioning. Thank you
Was medically retired around 2011 at 38yrs old, its rough being staked down but you can do it buddy, my best advice to give is find a hobby that keeps you busy everyday!
AMAZing video as usual. For a future video guest. Kevin Owens with Fieldcraft survival. I think would be a great person to have on.
That would be cool!
I love these stories. They're hard to listen to, getting through the pain that never goes away. Losing friends in war. It's so tough. This guy is awesome. He's prevailed through it all.
Every one of these seems to have something desperately relatable. These guys lived it on a grand scale. Their lessons and wisdom are so beneficial for the rest of us... especially the TBI stuff. THANK YOU!
I was just a lowly 19D30 Cav Scout. These guys are the best of the best of the best
Love these stories it makes me remember what I’m training for
Great as always😎 Can you try to get any UKSF guys on, Who have served in the GWOT. We dont hear alot of combat stories from them👍
They have crazy no disclosure contracts they sign when they join SAS/SBS. So it’s almost impossible to get them to talk about their operations.
Glad to see your channel is growing!
If you could interview retired colonel Michael Dane Steele of the United States Army. He was a company commander in the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment Captain during the Somalia mission Operation Gothic Serpent, and was a CIA asset during Iraq.he wrote the books..
That would be awesome
Captain Steele! When we get on the 5 yard line your gonna need my rangers "Where are my running backs" "hooah" 😂
This channel saved my life, thank you Ryan & Kevin ❤️
Thanks for everything fellas! God bless!!
Powerful. Thank you
Incredible !!!!
Amazing stories love these videos
I keep on watching this since last month after watching the 1st ever video then i waa hook..
Keep making videos sir...
Wow nice stuff, and love scar's too
I use pain killers at the moment in hospital but for me I use my art as pain killers I focus on the journey of starting my art piece using bright colour paint pens to deal with the pain and focus on this so its uplifting positive the more you use pain killers then you need stronger then stronger and sadly you become addicted my art is the pain killer Lyn thank you for sharing Lyn ❤
Ive been on pain killers since 2005, ive tried every kind their is. Any advice i can give would be to stay away from Fentanyl patches, was on those for around 3yrs and those alone almost killed me and i was taking as directed. Fentanyl is extremely hard to stop, MAJOR withdrawal symptoms.
Respect thank you 😀💜🙏
Thanks for sharing your story!

Creature was a good dude. RIP Creature.
@@RamadiTaxiDriver60M he was an awesome dude! Basically helped mold me into the man I am today! Did you serve with him? I'm close family of his. Looking for guys that knew or knew of him! Have a great weekend!
@@stammercane2427 not sure why my comment was deleted. Told a story about what he did for us but my comment was deleted.
@@RamadiTaxiDriver60M any other way of getting in touch w you?
@@stammercane2427 hit me up on this screen name (minus the 60m) on g mail
Awesome video again, just thought I should throw this out there, you should have billy Waugh on the show super decorated guy
Great episode as always, could you get some PJs / CCTs on?
My little brother was CCT… Not so little any more. Lol. Doubt he’d do something like this though… He’s been out for almost five years and just finished law school and passed his bar exam… He’s a badass! And cool af! Some of the funniest stories ever too! But I have to pull it out of him to get him to tell them… He’s so freaking humble, you’d never know he was CCT unless you already knew him or somehow caught him mentioning it on a rare random occasion… Love that dude to death and so proud of him!
He interviewed a few already.
@@kevinmorthorst521 yeah but it will be cool if he interviewed a pj or Cct from 24th sts
@@chad5718 I think mike ritland has a podcast with a 24sts PJ attached to Devgru
Impressive merits and personality
PSQ-20s were rad, that thumbnail brings back memories of that thermal setting.
A Macho Man Randy Savage and Ultimate Warrior figurine is awesome 😆 Almost as badass as Gravy's horse shoe. What a great interview. I'd love to hear him speak some day.
Thank you for the great content, can you please interview Paul R Howe.
He is gonna be on the team house podcast this Friday.
I love the military
Interview Sean "Buck" Roger's. He's amazing, former Green beret, a police officer, author and entrepreneur. His story is truly incredible and I'd think you would enjoy his story's on your show.
What was the thing you bleeped out when he said something?
It was a jsoc unit. Probably can’t publicly say due to its classified.
We must stop forever the wars in all the world... and all politicians who make wars.... to be arrested for crimes against humanity.
And the fools who murder for them!!!!
This guy looks like a completely different person than who was in the thumbnail
so why didnt he fire the 50, no visual target?
When you gonna find us a sheep dip @combatstory?
I feel conflicted watching these videos. Aren't we leaving Afganistan now and the Taliban taking back over? I hope all this loss, sacrifice and heartbreak given by these amazing Americans was worth it.
It wasn't. Tens of thousands of guys with PTSD or physical injuries plus thousands dead would never would be worth any ounce of sand in that place.
Harvard huh? I'm sure you used to hostile crowds and forces right?
What got bleeped out around 42:03 when he mentioned his first helo assault? I don't understand how you become a Green Beret, especially in the middle of two ongoing wars where the primary insertion method for both conventional and special forces is by helo, and you've never once practiced an assault exiting from a helicopter? Makes no sense to me.
Circumstantial, sometimes you miss a school because the odds weren't in your favour, even if it is extremely unlikely, it can happen.
There was a few things off. I think he is what the Marines refer to as a POG.
I'm in the comments looking for speculation on what was bleeped out. It looks like he says JSOC but they even said it was with JSOC later so not sure.
@@BirdDawg1 Green Berets aren't POG's..
JSOC gets priority for helo insertion in theater. All other units have to make do with what’s available. It sounds like he was in a very remote area so it doesn’t surprise me they didn’t have helicopters to get around.
I was thinking - WHO in the actual F would dislike this content/story???
…ahh - disregard. I know the type. SMH.
Jesus talk!!! What a joke!!!
Nothing...nothing including the Green Berets, Rangers, and other top tier special forces don't hold a candle to Seal team guys, they don't have the funding, not the budget, that the seals have. They will be and always will be the tip of the spear that goes in harm's way. They are the true beasts!!!! Seldom seen...never heard...always devastating!
Bahahahah ok idiot!!!!
Bunch of you fools been killed!!! Pawns LMAO!!!! Seals are seals they drown!!!!! There's much higher level men!!!!
Never heard lmao....the amount of books and movies doesn't demonstrate quite professional.
@@clintcoop5717 you wouldn't last 24 hrs at b.u.d.s. clit...I mean Clint...lol
