Inside the President's Daily Briefing: A Deep Dive with Senior Intel Officer Michelle DiGruttolo
Today we have a great Combat Story that ranges from the military intelligence tactical front lines of counterterrorism and the Korean peninsula to the most strategic of all, serving as the PDB briefer to the President of the United States (POTUS) with senior intelligence officer Michelle DiGruttolo.
👀 Don't miss out! Check out our Combat Check-In for exclusive updates, fascinating historical snippets, and much more! Visit combatstory.com/newsletter.
I strongly encourage you to listen to the end of this podcast to get a full appreciation of Michelle’s experience as the President’s briefer, to include her role as the briefer during the Benghazi Consulate attack (you can, of course, listen to our previous interview with Kris “Tanto” Paranto who was on the ground during that attack to hear both the front lines and halls of leadership perspectives on that pivotal day).
Michelle began her career as an Army intelligence officer and then transitioned to the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) where she would eventually lead a division of 40 fellow analysts. While at DIA, she was handpicked to compile and deliver the President's Daily Brief (also known as the PDB) to then President Obama and his Chief of Staff Jack Lew.
The PDB role to POTUS is not a political appointment and is only entrusted to the elite of the intel community’s analytic core, which Michelle is. As always, we do not get political in this podcast, however, to ensure we hear both sides, we also have former President Trump’s PDB briefer booked for later this summer to understand what her experience was like in the Oval Office under another administration.
Michelle also briefed and/or worked closely with retired senior leaders Petraeus, McChrystal, Clapper, and several household names across her career, exposing her to leadership at the very highest levels.
After service, Michelle went on to found Sage Raven Advisors, where she leverages an extensive network of local advisors, partners, and affiliates and couple them with cutting-edge technologies and data analytics, to provide actionable and timely insights to clients in complex and dynamic geopolitical landscapes.
I hope you enjoy this very interesting deep dive into the life of a career military intel officer and the life of a PDB Briefer to the President as much as I did.

Cool, bro
DGSE agents bombed a Greenpeace ship in Auckland Harbour, New Zealand, killing Fernando Pereira, a Portuguese photographer.
Ryan, I love your channel. You are doing an amazing job sharing stories of those who serve our nation. Please consider interviewing Brigadier General Dan Hickman. He is a friend of mine and I have just finished reading his book “A Thousand Chances.” It was published in 2023. He shares his experience as an infantry private who is then trained as a WO pilot of a Huey in Vietnam with Bravo Troop, 3rd/17th Air Calvary. He flew most of his missions in the Huey but flew missions in the Cobra and Scout helicopters as well. His book is amazing. He remained in the US Army and later served in Iraq in 2003 with the 1st ID where he commanded the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team near the Sunni Triangle. (I am a Marine Veteran who served during peace time right after the first Gulf War). I would love to connect you with General Hickman. He is so well spoken and down to earth. He always asks me to call him Dan. Keep up the great work with your channel, I enjoy it very much.
What a fantastic guest and interview. My enlisted US Navy career was exciting, successful and all over the place. Listening to Michelle describe neurodivergence as a helpful tool was enlightening and reassuring. Combat Stories is my favorite Podcast!
The fact that 2 presidents, back to back, disengaged from the intelligence community says A LOT

Wow, great interview!
“And if they’re loaded or not” How stupid would it be if a bunch of men all with guns, on their knees hidden under tables, made sure they were all unloaded. I think it’s safe to assume they’re loaded!

RoE and FOB, Make it get'it right, don't mess up, guett your guide right, or we pull plug. So, there's yours.
Amazing interview. The funniest part was seeing our American friend realize how tough French parents can be. Sometimes it feels like they're the Asian parents of Europe. I'm French as well, and my experience with my parents was the same.
❤️👍💯✅

Awesome interview! It would be interesting to have her and the onsight Benghazi folks speak in one show about the days before. What she had from Intel and what they felt on the ground.
You still need to be careful... To not be an alarmist in your voice.. deliver facts as you know them without inflection.
Love these “servicemen” telling their exaggerated stories. The ones with the real stories don’t tell them.
Fantastic interview.
Told my ex to do the same n she didn't come up from under the table.. I had two minutes to get to the next bar
You’d NEVER know looking at him the type of things he’s experienced, battles he’s fought, or losses he’s faced. Still with a warm smile and kindness in his eyes he recalls parts of his youth and I’m watching this ( only a few min in, admittedly ) like … this is a man of profound depth and character, someone who really understands the world and how it and the people who occupy it work. It’s fascinating to me, these type of people, and I can’t wait to watch this in its entirety and hear the stories and gems he’ll give. Thank you both for your service 🙏🏾
I would love to have her algorithmic filter for my own browser! At $5 a month she could stop working even at the basic level.
What a great interview! Absolutly love it.
Smh
Wow, great interview, I had several things I wanted to touch on but my brain is getting old and brain farts are a real thing, as much as those intel folks developed PTSD which I I believe 100% for target packages after doing pattern of life work and knowing they were fathers, uncles sons etc if had to be good knowing that removing that person first and foremost saved countless lives of those who were boots on the ground-out troops but also as a kinda of payback for those lost on 9/11, I am a retired paramedic who worked in the NYC system and not only worked it but lost a partner I worked with-RIP Carlos Lillo, but lost friends in addition who were EMTs and Paramedics, FF’s and NYPD as well, the sights, sounds, and smells still haunt my dreams over 23 years later, if I could’ve been the one pulling the trigger on any of those terrorists I would in a heartbeat with no remorse, an eye for an eye I guess you could say, I became a paramedic after getting out of the Army where I was a 13F in the late 80’s, I’m getting off track, anyway please know that myself and many many many other Americans are thankful of the job/mission you all played a very important part of and will be forever grateful for doing your parts!!! 🙏🏻💙
How the hell can you tell if theyre loaded by a quick glance? Hammer back on a double action? But you can cock a hammer with nothing in the chamber. So confused. 😂

Great interview- Michelle is a great American.
What a cool person. Great interview.

I hear you but have you checked W’s or BHO’s photos recently? Or for that matter Ryan’s or Shrek’s or Mike Edwards’ pics versus their pics from their years in service. Life in their lane ages one. PLUS females going naturally gray is currently fashionable. PLUS brainy life partners are best👍
