for those who dont know the Song is about The story of the Chasseurs Ardennais, whose emblem is the wild boar. A small Belgian unit of soldiers who were supposed to defend the borders and hold their ground along the K-W Line in May 1940. When the German armies, which included Rommel’s Ghost Division, approached the unit, they were supposed to retreat but due to communication failure the order never reached them. Instead they honoured their original orders, which were to defend the border at all cost. They fought so bravely and on such a large front, that they tricked the axis into believing that they were facing a force much larger than 40 rifles strong. When finally they were captured and their captors asked them -”where are the others?” they simply laughed and answered. -”There are no others, we are all!”.
The song gets its title from their motto Resiste Et Mords, in English, Resist and Bite.
Thanks :)
I know this and i'm proud to be a Belgian

For those interested in the full story behind this song:
At the Belgian Ardennes border, Rommel had chosen a little valley with a single bridge as a crossing point for the entire panzer push. Guarding it was a single company of infantry, the "chasseurs d'ardennes" (ardennes hunters) of about 60 men. This might sounds ridiculous, but at this point in time hope was still that Germany would back off OR attack at the much more fortified positions at the meuze. Nobody really expected them to come trough the ardennes (as the french will confirm..)
Their orders were to delay any Germans crossing the bridge until other forces could be redeployed. Needless to say, nobody took an entire panzer regiment into account. When Germans scouts on motorcycles crossed the bridge, everybody was so surprised they just let them ride on untill they even rode right by the company HQ. Seeing Germans passing by, the company commander falsly believed their position had already been overrun and he fled. Severed from all communications, the 60 or so chasseurs engaged the incomming Regiment and actually held them up for 2 hours fighting and another 2 when Rommel halted the advance, refusing to believe the then captured soldiers who said their were only 60 Belgians (-KIA's) present. Because who would be so stupid to engage a regiment with a company? It had to be an ambush of some sort....it wasn't
So in total they held up the German crossing for 4 hours, simply because they didn't recieve an order to retreat.
Last fun fact: In Belgian army officer training, this scenario is still played as a wargame excercise on the exact same location. Nobody in our training ever came close to a realistic 4 hour delay.
Wow thank you for clearing lyrics up wow

This reminds me so much of a Greek /German fight during WW2. In the battle of the Forts, a Greek soldier named Dimitrios Itsios stayed behind to defend their lines with just two soldiers to help him. They alone caused 300 casualties to the Axis and once they were captured the commander asked 'Where is the battalion that we fought?' and Dimitrios Itsios said ' It's us, just us.' then the German commander said 'Well done soldier. You lived up to your ancestors' reputation.' Dimitrios responed 'I just did my duty' and then the commander said 'Yeah, and I must do mine as well.' and he shot Dimitrios Itsios in the head, killing him instantly of course. Later some German and Italian soldiers took photos with the Dimitrios's corpse as a... trophy.
What a badass.

Check out "screaming Eagles" by Sabaton, almost same story as that, encircled American unit asked to surrender by the Nazis and given 2 hour deadline replied, “To the German Commander. NUTS! The American Commander.” However the Americans were saved, unfortunately the brave Ukrainians weren't, RIP.
@@jackburrows1071 Well the part of that story most people don't know is that the Americans actually significantly outnumbered the Nazis in that area. That was a case of simply calling a bluff, not actually facing certain doom like the Chasseurs Ardennaise or Heroes of Snake Island.

Perfect for battle of saragarhi and 6day arab war
Ukraine gonna loose at any cost no doubt in it
I know these guys were Belgian but their story remind me of the Italian Folgore division in El Elemein:
Totally outnumbered, with no anti tank weapons, they were told by Rommel himself to hold back the allies for a day.
By using crude handmade anti tank grenades, they managed to stop the British tanks for 3 whole days.
Imagine the look on the German officer's face when after fighting for close to 3 weeks with his army making little to no progress you finally take the enemy position, expecting it to be littered with enemy dead and wonded as you get ready to detain the survivors. Instead all you find are 40 men who laugh at you when you ask about the rest of their unit, because there is no rest of the unit.
"Where are your allies?! Your artillery? Your heavy weapons? Are you it?"
"Sorry to disappoint you mate..."
"We made you waste bullets and other valuable resources!"
GhostBear3067 It was actually like 2,400 men
Rommel wasn't a Nazi. He was merely forced to work for them.
No he didn't. The man wasn't party to any war crimes. He was a military officer doing normal military officer things. Commanding his troops in war time, just as he did during the first world war. And because he was falsely accused during a coup attempt, he was forced to kill himself by the Nazis, or they would kill his entire family. Maybe try learning some history?
if anyone cares this song is dedicated to the Belgian army during the so called 18 day crusade (even thought the 24 day crusade would be more accurate but whatever)
it especially is dedicated to the chasseurs ardennais(ardenian hunters) which was an elite unit of the Belgian army at the time. which fought so well that the germans always thought they where up against 4 or 5 times as many men as they actually where, it's because of these men that commando berets almost everywhere in the world where given the color green
so there you go a little history lesson for you boys
Thanks. :)

"If those paratroopers at Eben Emael had failed, and these men who were trained to fight in the Ardennes, all 30 000 of them, were here when I struggle against a mere 200 of them at the RK line, would I have been pushed back?"
- Erwin Rommel.
At the time of writing this he didn't know though, he didn't know that what he faced was not 200 men but 40.
Erwin Rommel wasn't at Bodange, but at Chabrehez, another stronghold of the Chasseurs ardennais. But I don't know if they were also 40
Now that’s just humiliating
@@Wildanc2227 Erwin DID however command the entire force pushing said 40 at large.
Interestingly enough, the Fallschirmjäger who captured Eben Emael were the ones who probably were the most critical to the 1940 Lightning War. Had Eben Emael not fallen, the fort would have been able to decimate German units trying to move into Belgium.
@@justsomeguy7921 Indeed. This is why I think that the Germans really weren't as prepared as they thought. I mean. They almost got fucking wrecked by the Polish. *THE POLISH NEARLY WON AGAINST GERMANY*
To be honest, if the allies HAD taken action when Poland was being invaded, Germany would have never made it to Warsaw.
The "German Warmachine" only became as powerful as we know it after conquering France. It is was probably at its peak in the beginning of operation Barbarossa.
Anyways, I'm getting side tracked.
In my opinion, the Belgians often get overlooked as a regional power in Europe. Let's be honest, Belgium isn't going to be winning offensive wars against most of its neighbours. But invading Belgium is nearly suicidal if you don't have a strong navy to do so. And I doubt you're going to be overpowering the British Navy whom are allied to Belgium. Long story short. Germany really got lucky with those paratroopers in eben emael.

It wasn't until hearing this song and doing research that I learned that the German forces were held up in any substantial way in their initial attack. To know now that such brave men fought and died to hold back the Germans is incredible, and it makes me wonder if the so-called miracle at Dunkirk would have been possible without the resistance met in the Ardennes and without that if the island of Great Britain would have lasted as long as it did. I've long struggled with finding a point in speaking my mind, participating in society, and even living. However stories like this where resisting evil was enough to make a difference gives me hope.
We Belgians have been fierce warriors for thousands of years. Never forgive, never forget my brothers! Keep remembering our history.
"When captured by the Axis and forced to tell the truth, we will tell it with a smile, we will surprise them with a laugh, WE ARE ALL!" As in, the germans didn't believe that there were only 40 men, and they laughed at their captors. If that's not serious badassery, I don't know what is

It was 2013 I think. I was diagnosed with meniêre desease from a diving injury a few years back. My life was miserable, I lived alone in a small isolated place at the top of a hill, always nauseated and dizzy ALL THE FK TIME, and with this unbearable buzzing and ringing in my left ear. Life was hell, couldn't sleep, when I was in bed and exhausted falled asleep in 10 minutes I was full awake because of the noise in my left ear and that was the rest for the night. Many times I thought of killing myself because I couldn't take it anymore. Some people told me at hat time that i should have removed my
auditory nerve otherwise I would go insane.
One night I was browsing CZcams and came across Sabaton. And these lyrics. And something rebelled inside me. I wasn't particullary afraid of dying but I liked living, so I decided that I would resist till the very end, until insanity or lack of sleep would kill me. But I would give fight every day even with my bare teeth until nothing else remained, that I would not give up no matter what happened. This figure, of fighting until nothing else remained, of biting the enemy if necessary changed my life. Two years after this "epiphany" I begun to retook control of my hearing and balance.
To this day is the song that shouts across my bedroom when I wake up, every day.
This is amazing!

I retired from the Belgian Army in 2011 after 36 years of service. I served in Chasseur Ardennais (ChA) combat units for 7 years and kept wearing their green beret for 16 more years while serving in other appointments. I started up the Chasseurs Ardennais Regimental Museum in their present garrison of Marche-en-Famenne in 1995. I wish to thank Sabaton for this song dedicated to the brave men who served under the green beret of the ChA long before I did. (The first ChA units were created in 1933 and by May 1940, when the Nazi invasion started, they were 35.000 in an Army some 600.000 men strong). The green beret was adopted shortly after the creation of the first ChA units and on it, the soldiers wore a small metallic insignia representing a Wild Boar's head. The adopted the battle cry Resist and Bite !. The green of the beret represented the green of the pine trees, of which a large part of the Ardennes forests consist of. The Bild Boar is a very tough animal. It is generally peaceful if you leave it in peace, but if you attack it, you better don't miss, for if you only wound it, it will take care of you and only stop when it has finished you off. Now, let me set a few things right : the ChA had been formed and trained to fight in small units (Platoon or company) along the narrow roads of the Ardennes forest in Southern Belgium. A company was between 150 and 200 men strong, a platoon was 45 men strong, very close to the 40 referred to by Sabaton. While originally, the Belgian General staff intended to use the ChA to block the enemy advance, changes in Belgian defence policy were followed by the decision to use them for delaying action in the Ardennes and, after only a resistance of 24 hours, to withdraw them behind stronger positions, first behind the river Meuse, then behind the KW fortified line where the nazi invasion was supposed to be stopped with the help of the French Armies. On the 10th of May, most units of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd ChA Regiments did exactly that : they stopped the German forces for some time and then withdrew in good order. Unfortunately, at Bodange at Company of the 1st Regiment and at Chabrehez, a company of the 3rd got trapped by units belonging to Panzer divisions under command, respectively of German Generals Guderian and Rommel, from there the reference to Rommel. These two companies, which were understrength, for they had sent detachments to other places blocked the enemy advance outnumered one to ten or even more. After finally having overcome their resistance in the evening of that first day of the invasion of Belgium, the German commandes saluted the bravery of the green berets. What was left of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Regiments joined the 4th, 5th and 6th Regiments and, togenther with the ChA Artillery Regiment, the ChA motorcycle battalion and a few smaller units wearing the green beret, took their fair share of the fighting but, after 18 days, the Belgian Army was forced to surrender. While most divisions of the Belgian Army had lost most of their cohesion on the day of surrender (28 May 1940), the 1st and 2nd ChA divisions (respectively consisting of 1st, 2nd, 3rd Regiment and 4th, 5th, 6th Regiments) still were considered as able to fight on, but were ordered to stop fighting by the general staff.Under the German occupation, many a Chasseur Ardennais who had escaped from capture after the surrender turned to resistance movements. In September 1944, when crossing the Belgian border to liberate the country, many American soldiers were surprised to see resistance fighters who guided them wearing the gree beret. On the other hand, the story of the British commandos adopting the green beret as a homage to the ChA is just a legend without any historical grounds. Of course, in the post war ChA units (a few were raised again after the war and there stil is a small ChA battalion of 450 men nowadays), all soldiers were very proud of that story, but recent studies once and for all established that this was only a legend spread by a ChA veteran who had fled to Britain after the Belgian surrender and who was parachuted back in Belgium by the British secret services a few months later. The man was lucky enough to survive several very dangerous missions and all younger generations of ChA soldiers have the greatest respect for what he did, but the story of all commando units wearing a green beret in memory of the ChA is wrong. If you want to know more, of the great story of the Chasseurs Ardennais, visit their Regimental Museum at their barracks at Marche-en-Famenne in Belgium. They'll be proud and glad to guide you around.Resist and biteAn ugly and mean old Wild Boar.

This is probably my favorite Sabaton song. Perfect for lifting, running, shooting, dying on a hill. It's like a Swiss Army song.
The opening riff reminds me a little bit of Thunderstruck.
Just makes it even more epic.🏆
Remember this. When outnumbered and outgunned by the enemy, when all but a few people are left on your side, there is only one necessary option...

After doing a bit of studying on the meaning behind this song (I'd heard talk of the heroism of Belgium's armed forces) this just proves that size means shit.
For those unfamiliar with the meaning behind this song, it is a nod of respect to the Chasseurs Ardennais. Their emblem is a Wild boar ("The boar against the eagle" obviously referencing the eagle seen in German insignia/icons vs the Belgian boar). While other units in the region were told to retreat, the Chasseur Ardennais never received word to fall back. As such, they dug in and fought back against one of the most powerful armed forces the world had ever seen up to that point. 40 men versus armored cars, tanks and overwhelming infantry. Considering how ferocious their defense had been, the Germans had believed the defensive forces were far greater in number.
When German forces finally overwhelmed the Belgian defenders, they were (understandably) shocked to find so few men holding the line, they asked "Where are the rest of your men?", the Chasseurs laughed and told them flat out "There are no others- we are all!".
Edit: Resist and Bite was the Chasseurs Ardennais motto/battlecry. When the pin of the Boar shows up ( 2:15 approximately) You can see the cry ("Resiste Et Mords") engraved in their pin.
Thanks for explaining it

This song hits different at this time...
When he shouts “All alone!”, I heard “Wololo!” And then, I switch side.
"And forced to tell the truth, we will tell them with a smile, "We are all. We were all."
This line references how the Wehrmacht thought these men numbered 200 at the lowest but due to their guerrilla tactics they were in fact only "40 rifles strong".
Yeah that was what I was thinking.
It was similar to Mad jack Churchill he had a small amount of commandos and he tricked the Wehrmacht into believing it was a full battalion so they surrendered to a small force of commandos
Sergeant York!
40 rifles strong, this means theres a possibilty some men only had shovels brances ect.
I always thought it was we are armed
Actually, Rommel estimated something in the thousands.

Every history class should start with a Sabaton song. As a former historian iin German and Russian history I believe that it would encourage teens to study history.
You know, this may be an odd thing to notice, but the kick drum, all the way through this song - the tempo of it always gets to me. Like this vaguely unhinged "We're holding this, odds be damned." I can't put my finger on what it is, but it just really sticks with me.
A history teacher who uses Sabaton to teach part of his or her class deserves merit pays

Sabaton make us remember, That they failed, Maybe nobody remembers them, but they were in history... And they held their ground until the end.
That's clearly not a fail to be ashamed of.
They had no chance of holding back the Germans for long. The point is that they defied the invaders till their last efforts were exhausted. In other words, they didn't just give in.
You guys are talking about what?
Fênix Player when 40 men held of the initial attack by the germany fearsome ghost division so strong that the germans thought they fought again 250-300 men. Didnt you listen to the song?
Also despite what the media often potrays, the German army was some next level shit in regards to warfare. The fact an inferior force could do so much to them in a short amount of time is impressive to say the least.
8 years later and this is still one of my favorite songs by Sabaton.

My great Grand father was one of thoses man and died as a hero for Belgium in a bombing raid like many others, he was part of the battalion de Chasseurs Ardennais . I've showed this song to my grand father, he don't realy like heavy metal. But when I tell him what this song is about he start crying and listen it again. This song is a great hommage to all thoses guys who fight for belgium and for freedom. This is why I realy love Sabaton, great songs and great text. This is a great song in the memories of all the people who died during this battle and during all the WWII.

Y'know. The fact that these people only stood their ground when all the while they were supposed to retreat but they didnt just because they didn't know they were supposed to do so really sends shiver down my spine. It reminds of a story :
Some Student at a school used to be really just bad. He would sleep at his math class. At the end of the class he woke up and saw a number of equations at the board. He thought they were his homework and wrote them. He went home and thought really hard about it and solved two of three. Tomorrow he turned them to the teacher. The teacher was surprised and He told him that they were Mathematic Mysteries that were unsolved for so long even the greatest geniuses of all time couldn't solve. He thought he was supposed to solve them and that is what he did.
When one of them was shot, the soldier simply said.
“Tis’ but a scratch’.”
