========= To Hell And Back LYRICS ==========
A short man from Texas
A man of the wild
Thrown into combat
Where bodies lie piled
Hides his emotions
His blood’s running cold
Just like his victories,
His story unfolds
Bright
A white light
If there’d be
Any glory in war
Let it rest
On men like him
Dead men will never come back
Crosses grow on Anzio
Where no soldiers sleep
And where hell’s six feet deep
That death does wait
There’s no debate
So charge and attack
Going to Hell and Back
A man of the 15th
A man of Can Do
Friends fall around him
And yet he came through
Let them fall face down
If they must die
Making it easier
To say goodbye
Bright
A white light
If there’d be,
Any glory in war
Let it rest
On men like him
Who went to Hell and came back
Crosses grow on Anzio
Where no soldiers sleep
And where hell is six feet deep
That death does wait
There’s no debate
So charge and attack
Going to Hell and Back
Oh gather round me
And listen while I speak
Of a war
Where Hell is six feet deep
And all along the shore
Where cannons still roar
They’re haunting my dreams
They’re still there when I sleep
Crosses grow on Anzio
Where no soldiers sleep
and where hell is six feet deep
That death does wait
There’s no debate
So charge and attack
Going to Hell and Back

theres a movie where he even played himself its called to hell and back
Audie Murphy's mom probably: dont worry son, no one will remember you were short when you become a historical figure
A first line in a song about him: "A short man from Texas"
OOF
He fought in the battle of off-brand Anzio, a way of saying he was not in the actual battle of Via Anziata. But near enough and close enough in time to be included.
@@diamentus3774 rip
Actually starred in a war movie where he played a coward. Murphy, a coward? Right.....
I just discovered that some of the lyrics of the song are quotes from Poems that Audie Murphy wrote. Sabaton always amazes me with its attention to detail and love for history.
yeah they do so much research
Fr
Which ones?
@@projam7534 The bridge and most of the chorus are taken directly from one of Murphy's poems, "The Crosses Grow On Anzio".
'Oh, gather 'round me, comrades, Oh, gather 'round me
And listen while I weep And listen while I speak
Of a war, a war, a war... Of a war
Where Hell is six feet deep' Where Hell is six feet deep
'Along the shore, the cannons roar And all along the shore, the cannons still roar;
Oh how can a soldier sleep? They're haunting my dreams, they're still there when I sleep (this is more about his PTSD, but cannons hindering sleep, so it counts)
The going's slow on Anzio
And Hell is six feet deep.'
There's a third stanza, nothing directly from there in the song, though...
'That death does wait
There's no debate; (beginning of second part of chorus)
No triumph will we reap.
The crosses grow on Anzio,
Where Hell is six feet deep.' Crosses grow on Anzio, where no soldiers sleep and where Hell's six feet deep
Joakim is known for shooting people who get their facts wrong
The brillant thing about this song is that Sabaton didn't need to sing about him this way:
Audie Murphy near singlehandedly held off 6 German panzers and hundreds of German troops, with nothing but a heavy machine gun and limited artillery support. They could have easily written about his feats in battle but they chose to sing about his PTSD and how he dealt with it.
This very song is proof that Sabaton doesn't glorify war, but honours the men who fight them. Real respect right here.
its amazing how he had to face the horrors of war
Audie was interviewed extensively about his exploits, several of which were deemed too outrageous for his movie, aptly titled “Hell and Back.” In one instance, he was speaking on radio with his superior officers and they asked him how close the enemy soldiers were. He responded that if they waited a minute, they could ask the soldiers themselves. At another point, he stood atop a tank ablaze, still firing upon enemy troops. When asked about it, he said that the weather had been particularly brutal and it was the first time his feet had been warm that winter.
@@abcdefghij337 IIRC, the interaction was between him and the artillery men he was ordering strikes from
At one point they asked “How close are they”
To which Murphy replied “Hold the phone, I’ll let you talk to one of the bastards”
If i remember well, in an interview of why he wiped them all out with his machine gun, he replied "they were killing my friend"
I agree with you on that one. Technically speaking, Sabaton did bring up the things Audie did in battle if you look at the title of the song. To go through a long, hard battle, emerge on the other with PTSD, and you're still willing to speak about you problems are the makings of a true soldier. And as the title says, Audie Murphy went "To Hell And Back".

Respect to Audie Murphy, I love the whistle at the start and end, crazy that he was the most decorated soldier from WW2, also PTSD is very real so seeing kids on Tiktok saying that they have PTSD because they tripped over a seashell at the beach once really annoys me, because my great grandfather (who died in like 2016) served in WW2, not on in D-Day or Dragoon but he served in WW2 and that's what matters.
Huge respect to your grandfather, being in a war can completely destroy someone, hope he is okay (if he is still with you)
@@regalblade8171 unfortunately he is no longer with us, but you are very correct, being in a war over his homeland (he was Polish) must have felt not only liberating but also very depressing, war is a terrible place, and nobody should have to be thrown into it.

@@AnjelCaido69 I know.
Well, governments shouldn't care if they were attacked. In case if they attacked someone they SHOULD not let any information about losses leak or else all of their country will hate them. And yet even if citizens don't know about the losses there will be a lot of people that unhappy about the war itself. And we still didn't say about other governments. If this is a nuclear country like France, India there's always sanctions. And if it isn't there's a chance that others countries will invade the aggressor. So the statement about "governments don't care about wars" is wrong.
surviving war is both about getting your body out of it in one piece...but also to salvage the mind afterwards so it not fractures or resorts with maddens as last ditch efforts to escape memories or knowledge about just how unbridled the rage of industrial never ending war can be :/

Oh, gather 'round me, comrades
And listen while I weep;
Of a war, a war, a war...

Along the shore, the cannons roar.

This song was written about a soldier by the name of Audie Murphy. The most decorated soldier of WWII. He was from the state of Texas. After the war he became an actor. He was deemed too short and was denied service more than once. But man what a warrior.
A real life Captain America. If it weren't for the fact that the comic character was invented before Audie went to war, I'd almost say that Marvel Comics owes his estate a lot of money.
@@Thomas.Wright yeah he was definitely a real-life Captain America.
It's not about the size of the dog in the fight, it's about the size of the fight in the dog.
He was also way funnier than Captain America.
At one point during a recounting of his experiences, Audie said that he climbed up onto a burning tank to shoot. He was asked if he was scared to do it. Audie replied that standing on that tank on fire was the first time his feet had been warm that winter.
Would love to read an account of Steve Rogers meeting Lt. Murphy in Italy. Only Steve salutes him.

My great grandfather fought in ww2 in the army, Stormed the beaches of Normandy and fought in the battle of the bulge in the freezing conditions and he was one of two men in a group that survived after another soldier accidentally dropped a landmine that they were loading into a truck which caused it to go off and the blast knocked my great grandfather and his friend back against an old wooden house and knocked him unconscious and was sent to a hospital off the front where he was treated for his wounds. Where you from

@@EinOffizier oh no, brother. I told you to pick America as your spawn point. Ya done goofed.
@@alastor8091 hahaha, yea Russia its trash, but at least we don’t have multi-colored freaks marching;)
@@EinOffizier Damn you destroyed him.
My grandad survived the death railway in Burma he was Japanese pow and so lucky. He lived to be 102 I'll always be grateful for the sacrifice of the soldiers of ww2. We can't comprehend what they went through to defend our countries from tyranny
Was a fan of this song, learned about Audie Murphy, now an even bigger fan of this song.
One of the favorites. Also that whistle solo.. 👌 respect to the man. He realized he was addicted to the.. “medicine” and stopped.
Audie Murphy's son has actually listened to this song and loved it, he even gave sabaton an original film poster of the film of the same name.
“A short man from Texas, a man of the wild.”
Those lyrics hit me hard because it’s exactly me
You is from Texas?

sabaton saying "dead men will never come back" is the most unrealistic thing ever when they have and entire song about dead men coming back
Who would have thought that someone as tremendous as audie would appear in a 1955 film named after his very own diary too...wow!
So thank you sabaton for bringing him into the miraculous creations of your music. Much respect from Newcastle Upon Tyne , England 🤘
As I like to say, this man was such a hero, the only actor awesome enough to play him in a movie was himself.
There is no better music to listen to while in a combative game or in war in general. Another great one!

I'm not sure this is a good song for war. It's a dismal song, that the enemy and friendly fire slaughter soldiers, or civilians, as if they were animals. War is a terrible thing and hurts everyone.
@@merryrose6788 this is a song about solider Audie Murphy and it captures him quite good and his time in war, but not as good as the books and the documentaries
I listen while playing Risk of Rain 2.
Growing up in the town where Audie Murphy was from made me love him and this song strengthened that love
I love the Western motif in this song, its perfect for the story of Audie Murphy
Immediately loved this from the start
This song has a special place in my heart.
There are many reasons why, but the highest was for our music and history assignment where you have to make a Wild West film with music. But we didn't know how to compose - this was my luck.
The "Crosses Grow On Anzio" Always Give Me Chills👍👍👍
„A short man from texas a man of the wild thrown into combat where bodies lie piled"
Holy cow THAT is a powerfull line
The whistle is just out of this world❤
Audie Murphy is an absolute badass.
The flute in this soothes my soul
To hell and back, one of my favs! Lyrics so deep showing the effects of PTSD on the soul...!
Holy hell this song is so good I'm head banging at 1 am
@Xiya Noma 13 Hecc off my comment you heretic

Fun fact. This song stands like an alarm clock for me. To make it easier to get up to school)
Replace Kentucky with Texas and you have my grand father, he served under Patton. Thank you for reminding me of him, you guys rock.
Back in the day when I first heard this song, I turned it on and on because every time when it ended I've felt that I could not get enough of it.
This song is great for telling a story of such a hero and inspiring personality and in such charismatic way that make adrenalin burst through you while listening to it.
The first time I heard this song was about 8 years ago during my teenage years and it still has a warm place in my heart.
Hearing and reading such stories about Audie Murphy can inspire you to keep fighting through the most hard, dark and desperate battles of your life.
Keep on fighting, brothers and sisters.
Don't give up.
I was born into this world with this song playing.
This is, without a doubt, the song of my people.
Jesteście zajebiści w tym , co robocie ! 👍🏻💪🏻 dzięki Panowie . To taka nowa nauka historii , dla młodych. Niech wiedzą , choć od Was jak było i co my przeżywaliśmy 😔 pozdrawiam z Polski
The melody is the best part about this song.
I love the whistling at the beginning like it’s an old Western film. Audie Murphy was cowboy, through and through (he was Texan after all)
Listening to this while dropping to malevelon creek 🤘
I knew I'd find this comment somewhere, just didn't expect it to be the first one I see. Fight on brother!
better then 90% of other music today
at first i read it wrong but youa re very correct
Is it weird that this song kind of helps me? When I get an panic attack or flashbacks and this song plays.
It's often less worse , idk why tbh.
But like. Il listen to this even more now that it makes them a little less worse
The only band that can make you patriotic for other countries.

Listened this while watching one of Murphy's movies about him. The famous last stand on the tank destroyer went so awesome with this song!
Words just cannot describe how gorgeous this is. It wasn’t the first I listened to (I don’t remember which one it was, but it was either Red Baron or Bismarck), but it’s definitely one of my favorites. Absolutely beautiful.
I recently learned from a friend about the existence of this group, after listening to it, I was amazed at how cool, beautiful, rhythmically the artists perform, I listen daily, this is now one of my favorite groups
One of my favorite Sabaton songs! 🔥
