    What was the purpose of this interview? Is it to placate critics who begrudge a generational talent for drawing new attention and popularity? Are you diminishing Caitlin’s success by suggesting people only relate to her because her jump shot seems attainable? Steph Curry’s play might seem more achievable than dunking from the free throw line, but the WNBA never showcased such athleticism. Caitlin Clark’s performance is astounding, resembling an NBA player’s skillset for the first time. So, it’s the opposite for Caitlin compared to Steph.
    What does “institutional history” in covering the WNBA have to do with resenting Caitlin Clark? Claiming the WNBA wasn’t popular because games weren’t on network TV is a false narrative. Look at attendance and merchandise sales-the WNBA never had the audience to justify network TV slots. When the WNBA launched, it had significant hype, but it waned because the games were perceived as dull, and the players weren’t comparable to the men’s game. Caitlin and a new generation of players have revitalized interest, bringing in new audiences. Be grateful for this. The WNBA didn’t create this phenomenon, but they are benefiting from it. Embrace it instead of being resentful that people now care.
    The WNBA and commentators like Jemele need to confront the truth. There’s a reason for the lack of previous viewership-it’s because the WNBA was seen as a joke by many for decades. It had no substantial audience. The “double standard” argument is rooted in resentment and jealousy. Being angry at people calling out this jealousy only confirms what you’re trying to deny. While there is misogyny in these discussions, if the accusation fits, it’s hard to ignore. You’re creating this narrative with your words and actions.

    • @michaellacross5266
      @michaellacross5266 Před 8 dny

      You're running from the merit argument. In fact, you don't even address it. CC22 is half the player (statistically) than what she was at Iowa. It was at Iowa where she got her popularity. Why? Because she could shoot a deep 3 (individual talent) which wasn't common in the NCAA until the last couple years, and more importantly, the success of the team...Iowa going deep in the NCAA Tournament ...was attributed to her (which is a false narrative in and of itself). But, if Iowa didn't go deep in the NCAA Tournament, do you really believe that CC22 would be as popular? Why? Iowa would not get the air time on TV if they didn't win. If Iowa doesn't get the air time, CC22 doesn't get the exposure. She would be anonymous. Thus, as long as CC22 individual game translates into team wins, she'll remain popular. The Fever are a horrible team. CC22 must show that her game translates into team wins. This year she'll get a pass from her fans, and non-fans. She's tired and been playing basketball non stop since last November without a break. But next year...that's the pressure year for CC22. The Fever most show improvement over the previous year or that popularity will take a hit. Right now, CC22 isn't statistically close to what she was in college. The W is a different league with better players night in and night out. Give her time to adjust, and the league to adjust.

    • @qrste81
      @qrste81 Před 8 dny +1

      @@michaellacross5266 You're saying her fame is due to her college team's performance (which is why they got exposure- it was earned) and her stardom is due to her skill. Rookies have made it before, and one could argue that Caitlin’s stats this year stand shoulder to shoulder with Diana Taurasi's. If all of this was based on merit you would be consistent there.
      The real question is if she was left off because she isn’t good enough. Well, according to USA Today, they left her out to avoid the fuss over her playing time. That doesn’t sound like she wasn’t good enough. It sounds like they were worried about team chemistry because the other players would be jealous of the attention she is and would get during the Olympics.
      How well did that work? Didn’t help that the head coach piled on and talked down to her and her stardom- dismissing all the goodwill and fanfare she is bringing to women’s basketball. Now the uproar is over her exclusion, a move that reeks of the league's fear of new fans. It’s peculiar-complain about lack of appreciation, then slam the door when it comes. The league must grasp that fans are their lifeblood. Give the people what they want!
      By the way- this has happened before. Jordan got freezes out of the All Star game because the men were jealous of him. I don’t subscribe to the idea that woman don’t support each other , but I think we can call out petty resentment when we see it.
      MJ was bitter and petty too. He made sure Isiah Thomas didn’t get to be on the Dream Team even though he rightfully deserved it. They blamed that on team chemistry too. Of course the difference there is Michael Jordan was the biggest draw in the world. Now over 3 years we’re seeing pettiness and jealousy ice out another generational talent.

    • @michaellacross5266
      @michaellacross5266 Před 8 dny

      Her game isn't modern. The NBA, International, and the NCAA have adopted the 3 ball a while ago making it a must for every position on the team. Now, CC22 is putting half the stats of her college game. Her 3 point efficiency is miserable right now. Why? She's facing better players. The W will adjust to a more distance shooting league because the math/analytics will force them to emphasize the players to practice that 3 point shot. But if the players can't shoot the 3 ball at .400 or better, the "product" you want to see will never materialize. Right now, CC22 needs to shoot the 3 ball at .400 or else she'll become a liability to the team. Her value is shooting the 3 ball at .400. She's tired (been playing since last November non-stop) and it shows in her stats and body language on the court. Next year is the year where she'll be judged on her actual game. Fatigue will not be an issue. Can she duplicate her college game statistically in the W? That's what I'm looking forward too. I think/hope she can!

Everyone knows what her opponents and even some of her teammates have it in for her one way or another, despite all of it, she is currently 5rh in. assists, 15th in scoring and top 12 in steals. She is tired and needs to adjust to the size and speed of the WNBA. All rookies go through it in both the NBA and WNBA. With strength and conditioning this offseason she will be better prepared and improve on her efficiency and high turnovers. The way she handles herself ion and off the court, her success is all but guaranteed, The League, players and refs need to protect her better like they did MJ for example the foul by Chennedy should have easily be called a flagrant one, The world is excited about CC and we all hope for her to succeed to lift the WNBA. 90% of the WNBA audience are men. 62% are middle aged white men - so we need to have the context of the discussion - why aren’t more women and minorities supporting the WNBA when that’s the majority of the players in the league??
    I am a middle aged white man - liberal - I had the WNBA league pass the last few years. I watch it with my nieces. They have noticed the toxicity and they are kids. “Man these girls don’t like CC”.
    Now there is SO much toxicity in the league it’s gross. It’s fine to stand up for a cause and be who you are. CC is getting hate for existing and being popular.
    People are more receptive to people who look like them. That’s the reality of human beings of ANY color or race. I am not saying it’s right but it’s just reality.
    There needs to be a really nuanced long form discussion of this - but people have so many agendas - some people wanna use her to promote whiteness and conservatism- some people want her to fail to say she was overhyped and I told you so.
    Some people wanna defend a black league from a straight white girl - even tho there has been straight white women in the WNBA.
    Marketability is not the same thing as best. Like I said I am totally liberal - but if you watch a WNBA game you are bombarded by LGBTQ messaging - to me I am not bothered by it but I could see a more conservative person who may they don’t hate gay people but just don’t want to promote that as strongly - they are turned off.
    I am not saying it’s right - it’s reality. Marcelis Wiley talked about this on his podcast.
    If CC was out here promoting trump or hate I could see calling her out for sure - but I haven’t heard her connected to trump or politics in ANY way whatsoever.
    But I can imagine CC thinking “you all hate me for existing as who I am and want me to fail but now you are mad I won’t fight hard enough for your cause?” - cause anyone in that situation - most of us - would tell that person to go to hell.
    In this situation CC responded the right way. But people are so bothered by her existence and being popular that they are so triggered they can’t think straight and are acting the fool.

    The Steph/Caitlin comparison in regards to marketable qualities is a good one. I've attended at least 10 arenas where Steph was the visiting player and nearly every kid of all races and cities is wearing his jersey. The NBA players would slight him and attribute the phenomena to him being 'light skinned' before his play muted those conversations. Bottom line is that it is beautiful to watch an athlete toss in logo 3s. Marry that with a winning personality and relatability...you have a star. That said, women's tennis owes the fact that they have had equal prize money for 40+ years to Billie Jean King-a gay woman. The women's game has been dominated by international talent since the 70s of various races and sexual orientations at or near the top. The problem is that Steph's popularity and Warrior attendance took a hit in 2019-20 season when the their record was 15-50 and they got the a lottery pick. Steph and the Warriors are tied to the success of the team, and how deep they go in the playoffs. CC22 is no different in that respect. How long will CC22 remain popular if she's putting up half the stats of her college career on a losing team in the W? A year? Maybe 2 years? If you truly care about CC22, you need to hope that she improves (over her current play) and that improvement translates to WINS for the Fever.
