Our R32 Mk2 Golf Is BROKEN! Can It Be Fixed?

  • Since refitting our R32 engine back into the VW Golf Mk2 engine bay we've been suffering with some running issues that we have been trying to diagnose.
    In this video we'll go through the fault diagnosis, looking at possible vacuum leaks and use VAG-COM VCDS to help us try and rectify the fault with the car so we can finally take our R32 swapped Volkswagen Golf Mk2 out on the road!
    Can we fix it? Have I messed something up after changing the head gasket and timing chains? Or is the 3.2 VR6 motor only fit for the bin?

    I don’t know what you’re talking about half the time, but you made it make sense!

      As some of the stuff can be confusing I do try and explain it in layman's terms everywhere I can. Would you like to see a first drive video?

      Yes please! Any idea when that may be?

      @mini_j_mac got a few little bits to sort out, like refit the front end again, which shouldn't take long, and to bleed the brakes. But once they're done we should be good to go! 🙌

    News at Ten: sighs of relief were heard as far away as Blackpool. No, really, I kid you not!
    Phew, could have been rather worse. Glad you got it sorted. Computers/ECU's; can't live with them, can't live without them.
    I'm old skool, cold chisel + 4lb lump hammer. If you can't fix it, then.... it😁

      @golfmk2  Před rokem +1

      You'll be pleased to know it did need some assembly with the use of a mallet. Does that count?
      At least with the computers on this car it directed me in the direction of the fault. Plenty of cars out there where that wouldn't be the case!

      @@golfmk2 yup, that'll do, as long as you can work to tenth of a thou. All metric now, so you'll have to convert it. 😁

    • @golfmk2
      @golfmk2  Před rokem +1

      @Jake Murphy one thou = 0.00254mm. Therefore one tenth thou = 0.000254mm.

      @@golfmk2 not bad tolerance considering it's a cold chisel and lump hammer. Skillz!

    You've learned and/or relearned a lot over this video series!

    • @golfmk2
      @golfmk2  Před rokem +1

      I'm quite glad I did the videoing of the whole process as I've actually been able to refer back to my own videos at points where I was stuck! How big headed is that? 😆
      But the amount I've learned along the way and the confidence gained is invaluable. Still more to do on this car and there's plenty more material out there for future.
      What would you like to see in future videos?

    • @ABF16V
      @ABF16V Před rokem +2

      Probably like to see some reactions to the car by others maybe who aren't aware of what it is. Onboard with a camera on them (ask their permission to use the video of course)

    • @golfmk2
      @golfmk2  Před rokem +1

      @ABF16VFTW haha that is a great idea. I had a friend who I took out for a spin in it a number of years ago and he had no idea what it was capable of, and when I planted my foot his reaction was just "jeeeeesus!" Wish I'd filmed that!
      Any victims, I mean volunteers you can think of? 😉

      @@golfmk2 You've mentioned to me a couple of times, when you're, say, at a particular place, where there are bystanders, their reaction when you get in the car, start it and then take off. Need to video those moments.

    • @golfmk2
      @golfmk2  Před rokem

      @Jake Murphy yes these natural reactions are the best! The fact it's understated to look at does fool people.

    Just a thought; when talking about the old chains, those still in spec and then the fitting of the new chain's, were the old chains actually that badly stretched or was the fitting of the new chains a case of renewing while the engine was out and the head off?

    • @golfmk2
      @golfmk2  Před rokem +1

      It was purely a case of replacing the chains whilst the engine was out and access was there. Theoretically you could re-use the chains and as mine were reading +1 difference 3 years prior (of course may have changed since) you'd think it may make sense to re-use them. But they're 17 years old, as are the tensioners and guides, so a bit like if you took the head off a belt driven engine you'd change the timing belt as a matter of course. This is no different. I've been reliably informed that the readings are likely to change as they bed in so I'll be sure to keep an eye on them.
