Since the release of the second generation iPhone SE one of the most common questions I’ve received is why Apple didn’t name it the iPhone 9. In fact, many people think it’s strange that the number has been skipped altogether. So in this video I’m going to explain some of the history behind Apple’s naming strategies with their products, and what influenced their decision to skip the iPhone 9. - Věda a technologie

In classical music there is something called the curse of the 9th refering to the symphony. Some composers even skipped the 9th symphony (Mahler calling what was effectively his 9th symphony The Song of the Earth).
It would have been really smart if Apple took that into account.

This was a similar approach where Microsoft skipped Windows 9 and went from 8.1 to 10

thats because a lot of computer apps are coded to search for the number 9 in the windows os to identify windows 95/98 so making it windows 9 would create a lot of glitches, bugs and problems that could be avoided if only they just name it windows 10 so they did

I always though of the iPhone XR as being like the iPhone 9. It had the design of the iPhone X, but had the LCD display of the iPhone 8

I realize this is an old video but I fell like chiming in. MacOS did something similar. When they switched from classic to Unix based, they went from OS9 to OSX. From that point MacOSX was a brand new product and all updates were prefixed by 10. You could have easily called them OSX 1-15 instead but they wanted to keep the image of evolution of the Mac brand. (Until macOS rename and then os11 changed things.)
So the X name signified a new product line with both MacOS and iPhone. Considering the 8 and the X came out at the same time this makes even more sense. Really the iPhones without a home button are all iPhone X and ones with the home button are non X. (So that new 13 is really a X3 since the X was an X0.)

The XR was the "9" (it's the immediate successor to the 8) but they had already released the X (10). So instead of looking like they took a step back they called it XR because R is right before S.

Technically, the XR was the 9. Because the XR was an upgrade from the 8 and then the X was an upgrade from the XR because it had better features along with an OLED screen, whereas the XR had a LCD. This is all regardless of whenever they were released.

I think Microsoft is likely to skip the number 9 and jump straight to 10, in order to not throw off any confusions with win 95, 98.

I didn't even know that they skipped it.
When I first heard it, I thought it was different, yes, but I thought it was a cool expensive iPhone not in-line in the iPhone series due to being characterized by a letter. Only 2 years later did I realize the iPhone SE was the only iPhone outside the original lineup, characterized by a completely different name.
I use the iPhone se 2022
i hate calling the iPhone SE 2020 a budget model. it’s the best iPhone i’ve ever owned. i am still thanking god for not making me use a screen based home button on my phone
other reasons for no 9.
1. industry standard version numbers by skipping they can play catchup to have 10s across the board.
2. the number "9" has some slang meaning that may be offensive or may cause some issues with the police and black community.
3. 9 was a maintenance release (lots of software developers do maintenance updates and test versions without a public release)
4. the 3g was a carrier protocol so it probably was to line up with that
of course then we would see the "iphone lte" and "iphone 5g"
5. the skipping of 9 could be a technical issue similar to what happens if you stick the ".sex" extension onto a file say for example naming a file "1.sex" in osx 10.15 catalina.
for some reason the ".sex" name causes the "icon services agent to run at 100% cpu and the finder to also run 100% cpu and spin the pinwheel of death.
the only way out if it is to open the terminal and navigate to where you have the offending file and delete it then force quit the finder and icon services agent.
Keep you updated on the updates you can do to help you get a better idea on your phone or your job to start on your computer or computer computer and you will get your computer back on computer computer or you could use
