History of Apple Proprietary Ports

  • through the years, Apple has featured quite a few different ports and connectors in their products. From USB in their older computers, to the lightening connector in todays iPhones. But most of the controversy surrounding Apple ports stems from their long history with proprietary technology. But even switching ports on new products is enough to ruffle some feathers. So in this video I want to discuss three connectors: Thunderbolt, Lightning, and Magsafe. But also talk about some controversial transitions from one technology to another.

The 30 pin connector for the iPods and early iPhones was really Apple's attempt at future proofing their devices. If you look at the schematics of the 30 pin connector, it had compatibility with all sorts of possible connections that were around at the time. (It could support S-video, of all things.)
I remember reading somewhere that either two or four of the pins were not connected to anything, they were just there to allow Apple to add compatibility in the future.
This seems a bit extreme, but you have to remember that at the time (2003-2004), USB was still relatively new, and no one really knew which computer connector would become ubiquitous in the future. We all know that USB would, but that wasn't really that clear at the time.

Never used a DB-15, it’s a DC-15 (first letter is shape, second letter is size: B can hold 25 pins, C 15 pins, E 9 pins at common pin pitch; the later VGAs used DE-15, denser pin pitch in E size, also referred to as HD-15)

Apple Desktop Bus is a bit-serial computer bus connecting low-speed devices to computers. It was introduced on the Apple IIGS in 1986 as a way to support low-cost devices like keyboards and mice, allowing them to be connected together in a daisy chain without the need for hubs or other devices. ADB was quickly introduced on later Macintosh models, and also found use on computers from NeXT, and saw some other 3rd party use as well. ADB was rapidly replaced by USB as that system became popular in the late 1990s; the last external ADB port on an Apple product was in 1999, though it remained as an internal-only bus on some Mac models into the 2000s.
