In just the past two years notches have shown up on almost every flagship smartphone in the market. And today we’re going to find out why this design element has become so popular and what might happen to it in the future. Now when most people hear the word notch, they probably think of the iPhone X. Since it was the first popular flagship smartphone to include one. But the origins of the notch goes back to a lesser known device called the LG V10 released in 2015. This is a story we’ve heard before when it comes to Apple. They typically aren’t the first to bring a new piece of technology to market, but they almost always introduce a refined and modernized version of the technology to maximize functionality. And I think that’s the case with iPhone X’s notch. But that doesn’t explain why the notch design element was being used in the first place. Why not just keep the display perfectly rectangular by creating an even thinner bezel that could still house the earpiece, camera, and sensors? After all, that’s what many android devices like the Galaxy S8 began to do.

Before watching I’m going to take a guess at the answer.
Apple created a notch to solve a problem they were having. Loads of sensors, dot emitter and camera but not wanting a forehead on the phone.
Everyone else created the notch because they were blindly copying Apple’s design as always, despite not having any of these sensors or 3D face mapping.
What amazed me was that some phone manufacturers actually had bigger notches.

@@apostle9209 Being able to listen to songs on that "necessary cord" is an option that people should be allowed to have. It's an option that had no interference whatsoever with Bluetooth headphones. It's true the wireless way has it's advantages,of course. But removing the headphone jack was removing an option people had on phones along with either device for DECADES and railroading them to get the wireless more expensive option.
I don't blindly hate Apple either. I like the notch idea and don't understand why the notch is disliked as it seems to be something that allows more display space and is functional allowing the notification bar info to have it's own dedicated space instead of an extra portion taken out of the display. If this is what is considered "bold" then okay because it's a good idea and others copying it I'd say are somewhat of a positive influence.
But literally REMOVING something that was not holding back anything else (no the headphone jack doesn't interfere in a phone's ability to be waterproof,I have an older flagship that had that jack and it's fully waterproof) is not bold.
It's motivated by money to have people buy AirPods or the extra cord to charge your phone and listen on headphones at the same time. And seemingly money talks because most other android manufacturers are going along with it.
That "Wireless future" can exist for people who want it,but having the mere extra option of having a wired headphone wasn't holding anything back enough to warrant removing it for no reason. While I think a person having to spend more money to buy wireless ones are a problem, personally I don't have a price issue with getting wirless headphones, I have 3,but it's easier to use normal headphones for me because you don't have to charge them. It's "Plug and Play",instant and reliable.
Also if Apple really cared about creating a "wireless future" than why would they even support the ability to use the old wired headphones with extra accessories like that headphone jack/charging cable hybrid or fully manufacturing entirely new headphones that taking up that charging port?

The status bar design, with icons coming from either side, and two general types of notifications, was just natural; either could grow towards the center and use that space, as long as the other side hadn't grown to the center. But generally you don't have or even want that many status notifications to fill the bar, so it just makes sense to use those two little areas around the earpiece and camera for the status information, freeing a strip at the top of the main display rectangle for more content. Then it's just the aesthetics of whether the status bar is set off (black) or extends the main color scheme. Also with LED technology taking hold it's probably easier to form around the notch than LCD, though phones like the LG V10 did use an LCD with a corner cutout.

For me, the only annoying thing about the notch is that it obscures parts of full screen videos, I just like to not have CRT-era like overscans on my digital device. Sadly, the obsolescence of the notch won't going to remedy this since rounded corners will most likely remain, and will keep parts of the video hidden.

  • @Totone56
    @Totone56 Před 4 lety +1

10:45 Actually, on some phones we can black out the notch like this while still keeping the system icons in it. I don't like it very much for the same reasons as you said, but i've seen a lot of people who love it this way. Always good to have a choice !
I also love the design at 10:27, looks great IMHO.
Maybe they could have put a system switch to toggle between the two designs, both are pretty nice. Apps could adapt to both by just cutting the content (Whatever fills up the notch can't be important anyway). This works great on OnePlus phones for example, doesn't kill the continuity of the UI at all.
But i know Apple likes to have one and only one UI/Design and very few options regarding customization, which is understandable. They want a controlled and well crafted UI, which is great too.

It allowed for grabbing the phone without triggering the screen as well as during general usage it gives the top information without sacrificing general screen real estateIt only becomes annoying if apps like games don't scale back their screens to avoid overlapping the notch but it's a small price to pay for me.

But you can’t design a new phone in a couple of months. No phone manufacturer invented it, rather the cutout display technology became available for manufacturers to use and Essential brought a phone to market using that technology asap while Apple took their time to design a more thoughtful implementation of the same tech.

  • @TrainGuy128

Theoretically Apple could implement a display that is clear when you turn it off but if it is on then you still can take photos from beneath the display what would be a huge benefit, but then there is a big problem for speakers but Samsung somewhat already has this technology as an ultrasonic under screen Touch ID which could be used to bring sound trough the display to the users ear more directly.
