"But what if I do overeat? How come I won't become overweight or obese by doing this? If I eat more I need to restrict or exercise to compensate! Otherwise, the excess calories will turn into fat and I will gain unnecessarily!
Maybe these are some of the questions you may wonder about the eating and weight gain in recovery. How will your body finally "balance out" and maintain a normal weight with no control?? In this video, I will explain how your body is meant to naturally maintain your set point weight no matter if you some days eat more or stay sedentary. How your body actually burns those "excess" calories without you having to do anything!

Your body will also balance out what types of foods you require each day, One day you may feel like more sugary foods, the next you want savory foods. Its our body's intuition telling us what we need. Listen to your body, eat what you want, but also be sensible and eat within moderation, enjoy what you eat, and the rest will all fall into place!

I am getting through this and this is so true. When I decided to exit out E.D seat (anorexia then bulimia) I was sure I would become obese or at least pretty overweight or forever struggling with weight. My hunger was so big I never heard of extreme hunger and thought I had either no willpower or was greedy as fuck. Anyway, after 20 years of unhalthy diet and abusive relationship with my body. I threw myself in recovery process all by myself 10 months ago. Had few relapses, usually for a few following days but with time I learnt to not blame myself, and keep going. When I had binges I would try as much as possible to implememt mindfulness and observe myself in the process of binging, it cuts the pleasure by half haha. I realized binges would mostly appear when I undereat or when I let guilt take over my mind. I have been purge free from 2 months now and it's heaven. I am still working out my hunger cues etc but definitely get a better grasp of it every day that goes by. My weight is perfectly within normal BMI index. I feel stronger, happier, more balanced, and dare i say proud. I realized now This E.D has served me a great deal tho. I was an oversentitive child in great need of coping mechanisms. Meditation helped a lot also. I am not my body. I have a body that enables me to experience life. Life is magical. I am done taking pleasure pretty exclusively in food. There is so much more excitment to get out of life. Thank you for the fantastic video

Recovery for me involved putting on more than 135 pounds within the first year. It was your book (and a couple of others in particular) that really helped me when it felt so scary to watch the scale go up so quickly. My weight leveled off and stayed where it was for a while, and eventually it started coming off - but I had to eat a LOT of food and a LOT of calories and carbs in order for the weight to come off. As long as I kept my calories and carbs too low, my body would not let go of the weight. It took me 3800 calories a day for the weight to stop piling on and start to reverse. This was pretty much impossible for me to maintain, coming from a background of starvation - both caloric and carb restriction. But your book helped me so much, and my body balanced out. I would have restricted again if it weren't for your research, experience and reassurance that I was on the right track. Thank you so much for that.

wow that's amazing story! its a great example how for the weight to actually come off we need to still eat enough! thank you so much for sharing :) how much did you overshoot from your set point? was it all the 135 pounds or? and how long time it took to be back to normal weight?

I've always wished to be one of these people, that actually have to eat more to lose weight. I still don't know if it would work for me.
I've been on and off of quasi-recovery for a few years, gained a ton of weight without losing it anymore 'cause dieting doesn't do much for me anymore. Years of disordered eating destroyed my metabolism.
I don't know what shifted in me, but a few days ago I decided to quit the diet mentality. Maybe it was because I felt burned out after trying to clean my diet for the nth time, and losing next to nothing, despite the fact I'm very obese now.
Your comment gives me hope. I don't know if this will work, nevertheless I'm willing to try for real this time.

I love how you put everything nicely into words. I just found IE and it's my first week and I LOVE it. It is like finding the freedom after imprisonment, like the air for the drowning. It is just my first week and I just feel like everything clicked and all the pieces of puzzle just came to their places.
I am still trying to get rid of the scale addiction, but I did step on it and saw that I lost almost 2 pounds in a week. This is with eating anything I want.
You don't know what this means for me coming from 30 years of constant dieting and still being obese. I feel like I found the secret everyone is searching for. Thank you!!

I remember once eating a lot more cereal than I'd meant to one Sunday morning. I didn't eat again until 2:00, and even then I wasn't starving. I wasn't restricting--I just wasn't hungry. When I feel like I've eaten too much, I try to remind myself of that day.

    Question,
So how does intuitive eating still apply if lets say i'm full after dinner, and then I want dessert? My body probably doesn't need more food (because I fed it properly) but yet dessert looks good so I eat it and become overly full. In that case, it would feel restrictive not to have dessert if I want it, but then again i'm not following my hunger cues because i'm full. Where is the line drawn between over eating and intuitive eating?

theres probably something that mmakes that desert inticing to you, tune in to yourself and figure out why, dont view it as a bad thing desserts are yum! but maybe theres a reason you are wanting it when you arent hungry.. maybe you always tell yourself no dessert so you start wanting dessert... maybe sometimes you feel overwhelmed during dinner so desserts help you calm down.. maybe you just feel like the taste.. whatever cause it is for you figure it out AND THEN you can decide what to do. just know that viewing desserts as a bad thing will only end you up in a bad situation, next time this happenes figure out why, be accepting, and actually enjoy that dessert. Sound like a long process but its just tuning into how we actually feel and in the end it pays off, the more you tune in with yourself the more you will realise.. My body dosent want this right now and i can totally have it later! You will start actually figuring out what you need! and yes at times i will be that dessert and you need to be non judgmental about it, aim to have dessert! until it becomes your normal. hope this helps whoever passes by and hopefully you if you find my reply ❤️

Hey, how come an overweight person, that's only ever followed their hunger and hasn't ever had an Ed, how come they're still overweight if their body is meant to keep them at a healthy weight? Cause a lot of overweight people eat when they're hungry but they're over weight

  • @Aoife1

Thank you so much for all your videos, this one in particular. I stopped restricting nearly 3 months ago after being orthorexic for as long as I can remember (even as a child) and being particularly restrictive for the last nearly 2 years. The weight gain really is a struggle - some days I think less about it than other days but I keep telling myself that I'm doing the right thing, that my body will tell me what it needs and that this phase is exactly that - a phase. Thank you for being so open and encouraging. Life with restriction is not life, it's existence. Existing is shit. Living is/will be more fun :)

I actually thought I recovered from my anorexia, but through watching your videos and doing research i recently discovered that I was just in limbo, quasi-recovery, alternating with the hunger-and-fullness-diet. During the periods that I was really committed and doing really 'well' in the hunger-fullness-diet, I did experience moments of higher energy and lower hunger, so I can definitely say that is true. The problem is that I was only doing the physical work - I was still in my head and emotions messed up, juding myself and my foods, even though I allowed myself to eat whatever I wanted and such. I have now chosen to focus more on my mental and emotional health, as I've seen that doing the purely physical part of things isn't hard at all. It's the mind and heart that matters (most) in recovery.

It’s so nice not to think about food. I come from a background of yo-yo dieting, major restriction and binge eating. Since I started this journey I haven’t actually had the extreme hunger, but every other time after restricting I do. I think it’s just the freedom part that makes me not feel like I need to binge

Do you know what kind of sign is when you feel very cold during or after a meal?

    • @FollowTheIntuition
      @FollowTheIntuition  Před 7 lety +4

i experienced this with eating lots of raw food, low salt, drinking too much water. Matt Stone talks about this in his book as well. he recommends to do the opposite - more salty food, cooked food, very calorie dense foods, drink only when thirsty. being very cold is also a sign of lack of calories, slow metabolism.

To people wondering if this is true because overweight people exist: As someone who used to be overweight then transitioned to having an eating disorder and is now at a healthy weight, I can say that people are overweight because they consistently don’t listen to their body. They overeat not because they want food, but because food gives them dopamine and serves as a comfort source. What they really want is dopamine, not food. So they usually eat until they feel uncomfortably full, which the body doesn’t want. After recovery I found hobbies so that I can get dopamine that way, and don’t use food as a comfort tool anymore and I’m a normal weight now. 👍

The information you share is truly wonderful, Elisa. I'm well into self-helped recovery, but during a minor relapse I discovered you, and I'm an instant fan. I do have one question though: you say that it's fine to eat for emotional reasons too. But then isn't it the reason why people become very overweight even if they don't ever restrict calories? Can you share a bit more about how one becomes really overweight (e.g. +20kg) even if non-dieter? Thank you! Warm regards. 🌷

Thank you a lot for your videos! I have a question though: Whenever I'm a few days into intuitive eating, I feel just fat after the weight gain from binge eating and get the same thoughts again of 'If I just fasted for a week or dieted really low for some time, I could look better and do intuitive eating even better because I would feel better in my body!', because with IE there's no guarantee to lose weight and it shouldn't really be a goal, but if you want to lose, it often is of course. So what happens is that I binge just to 'start a diet' tomorrow, diet for some days, binge because it's of course not sustainable, then go back to IE. I always fall for the same trap, but even if I know that dieting is not sustainable, I still have these reoccuring thoughts that make me want to give up IE just to justify binging now :(
