Reasons Ghost Dog shot the hicks: 1. They broke the law, hunting out of season for bears. 2. They threatened him with rifle...the one guy actually points it at him. Some people say you never point a rifle unless you intend to shoot it. 3. They offended his sense of love for nature...you see this throughout the movie with ghost Dog and birds, etc. They had it coming.
This is a very simple yet extremely powerfully directed scene, and it would have been so easy to have overdone it. The key to it, is Whitakers calmness and self- assuredness throughout...It is clear he knows he is fully in control of the situation. A very very underrated film.

let me let yall understand this so the scene in this movie makes more sense to yall for those who do not understand. He killed those two men for one reason and one reason alone. They took something from nature. In hagakure the author explains why it is important to balance your emotion when it comes to nature. By taking the natural life of that animal the balance of nature was tilted and only then as a samurai is to do is to re harmonize nature by replacing it.
One of my favorite films - and I JUST saw it/discovered it - thank you Sundance channel. It's so underrated - great story, music, symbolism, mystic, and bad ass. This clip resonates so much - the anger I can feel - the resentment against people who disrespect the natural world - especially when coming from an indigenous background, and being dismissed many times as a minority - as a person - this clip is so powerful -
@xerxes465 Agreed. However, I think the the reason Ghost Dog "cuts down" these two men is because they honor neither the laws of the land nor a code of mutual respect; in his eyes they're mere outlaws. As this notion of honor seemingly precedes "morality," they may be killed for their offense. Or so I gather.
'Sometimes it is.' Blam! He smoked that dude...Ghost Dog really does follow the code of the warrior greatly. That's why he's my favorite character in this movie.

I'm sure that Ghostdog took his seven breaths to think about whether he was willing to accept the consequences of ending their lives. That is all that the Way requires of him, in the end. His willingness to act and then accept the consequences of his action - good or bad - without flinching. One can argue about whether the two hunters deserved to live or die. Or whether the bear deserved to live or die. One can even argue about whether the two have connection. GD made that decision himself.
Great scene from a great movie. Jarmusch goes to some length to draw an allegory to the bear and Ghost Dog - referring to the bear as equal to men and the bear, like the samurai, is an endangered species. Both can be fierce or gentle, solitary and strong, and both hunted for bounty or bragging rights. GD's was not a vengence killing anymore than the killing of the bear was. Just the turn of events neither fortunate nor unfortunate. Also, check out Jim J's "Dead Man" - his masterpiece, imo.

Thats what bothers me as a Native American, seeing people hunt for sport and entertainment. Not for clothing, food, or respect for life.
