Some really good ideas, here. Thank you! I hadn't considered using 1-bys (or same-thickness boards) to continue the skirt board.
In my home, at the landing, there is the standard colonial base, which actually continues up the skirtboard. I'm not really a fan of that look, but at the same time I don't want to tackle changing it at the moment. Will definitely keep this video in mind, though.
