    Thanks for posting this! I tried disassembling ours to clean and re-lube the factory shaft but the clamps on the splines were going to require *significant* force to separate them from the spline shafts (zero chance I'd get them off using just my hands). I'd read some vague warnings about the steering wheel placement and was concerned I'd lose alignment during difficult disassembly. Your closeups of the master splines are very helpful in helping me understand how things should disassemble/reassemble, so I'm going to tackle this project again.

    Hi Charles, YES this is a common fault on Fiesta Mk7. I have had thousands of views to my CZcams video I uploaded 5 years ago. The swivel bearing joints just seem to be dry - and that's the problem! I suspect the grease (if any) gets dried up by the heat generated from the adjacent Electric Power Steering motor. Such a pity, because these are a great little car.

    Thanks Charles for making this video! It allowed me to diagnosis my mother's steering shaft problem in minutes and order the correct $138 replacement part using 2 day shipping (backlogged a week at most part stores). The local Ford dealership wanted to charge $650 for the repair but an independent local mechanic did the job for $93. Really appreciate your help getting the car back on the road.

    Thanks for the video. I removed and greased mine today and the knock is totally gone. Amazing. Replacement part in Australia was $833 from Ford so I'm glad all it took was 30mins and some grease! This video was a massive help.

    You just saved me $$$. My Honda Odyssey was making a clunking noise in low speed/parked when turning the wheel for several years. I thought it was somewhere in suspension/cv axle. After watching this video I went to my car and verified the noise was coming from the steering shaft. I got rid of the noise by extending the telescopic steering column. I will probably either grease the joint or replace it later.

    Thanks for some of the comments that helped me fix it. It's unnecessary to replace the column. Turn the steering wheel until you can see the bolt at the bottom. Take the key out and lock it. Undo the bolt and slide it up. Grease the spline with CV grease or heat resistant grease. I put a ton of grease on. Put it back in place and tightened the bolt again. The noise is gone! Apparently it's common with these fiestas. Was a pain in the ass kind of knock.

    • @Edward.E.
      @Edward.E. Před 2 lety +2

      Did you take the whole steering shaft out? What I mean is taking the white column apart from the whole thing. Because I couldn't, therefore I couldn't grease the top part of it, and then the problem stayed.
      Mine is Mazda 2 2012 by the way, not the exact same car but they share a lot of manufacture parts.

    • @davidsimpson2550
      @davidsimpson2550 Před rokem +5

      @@Edward.E. This is a bit late for you. One time I unbolted the bottom of the shaft and cleaned it up and regreased the splines with red rubber grease. The noise went away for weeks but then it came back. The next time I fully removed the shaft and cleaned it for AGES with a rag and brake cleaner whilst working the shaft in and out. I then worked red rubber grease into the spines and worked the shaft in and out for AGES. You really cannot grease it enough, the more the better. This time it was a permanent fix. Just remember to remove the key and lock off the steering wheel first. Don't put the key back in until you have finished.

    Great video. I had assumed it was my steering rack that was bad. Is there a way to confirm that the noise is coming from the steering shaft? Steering rack? or tie rods? I can tell if tie rod, but is there an easy way to tell the difference between steering rack and steering shaft? Thank you!

    I have 2013 with 105k. Same issue. Just finish fixing mines. Took about 1.5hrs. The shaft on mines just had 2 regular 10mm. Make sure to turn the steering wheel 1/4 turn to the right (passenger side) The ford logo should be facing the passenger door, this will allow you to access the top bolt. Make sure you lock the steering column before removing the bolts. I used a rope. After removing bolts remove the bottom of the shaft first. then top. (TIP: mark the top of the shaft before removing. this will allow you to align it properly later.) I used PB blaster to clean free the cv joints. Move it back and forth until it's moving smoothly. Grab a rag and clean all the old grease. Apply new grease. I used brake caliper grease on mines, it withstands up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. (Autozone) Go heavy on the grease. Clean excess and put back together. Thank You!!!!

    My S1600 is 73000 miles on the clock not making such noises was wondering if might happen or was this just a specific oversight by Ford not greasing the spline shaft during certain production period (09-2011) or all MK7 fiesta's affected eventually?

    So you know , FORD sent these cars out and failed to grease the spline where the shaft joins the rack , their fix is to unbolt carefully slide the shaft up and grease i would use high quality grease . You do not have to replace this drive shaft it was a factory oversight that causes this

  • @glenwigzell5425

    Hey Charles, that was a nice video and good explanation! However, I could see that the shat was not replaced, instead you used the same shaft greased with sticker removed. I could see that the shaft you showed was a solid/mono but at the end of the video after the replacement the shaft was still the same as old and not like the new one. Is it because greasing solved the issue or may be because the new shaft was not as per the design considering the safety? Thanks
