You can pretty much use your comment as a template for AEW in general since day one: "They had a real shot at a fantastic storyline with _____. So of course they sink it at the first opportunity."
My guess is that the there are a lot of unproductive negotiations along the lines of "yeah, you'll get beat like a drum but you'll get to give a speech" or "yeah, it's not a consistent angle but you get to all of your moves" or "yeah, you won't be in line for the World Title but we can make up a secondary (tertiary, really) title for you to carry and we can pretend that it's meaningful" or "yeah, we forgot that interesting story we had going but how about you get to wrestle a 62 year old Japanese legend and trade chops for 20 minutes?"
No one wants to hurt anyone's feelings by saying "no" to talent. And they don't want to offend their 250k hard core audience by denying them meaningless dream matches. And now they are shamelessly running the most sexist women's program since the worst of the Divas or the Knockouts eras... talk about losing the PLOT! TK has lost the book, the Spark Notes, and the VHS of the film version of the plot!

Yes, to that extent he really is unique in the history of professional wrestling. He's a promoter who isn't motivated by money. 130 year of American pro wrestling, good, bad, indifferent, at least the promoters had a sense when they needed to make a change and try something new. And the talent wouldn't get paid and they'd move on (another indicator). But in a way, I hope the gravy train never loses steam. It's good for guys like Ricochet to have a place to go when WWE can't use them. Then can make really good money at AEW. Sadly, they won't develop much as a talent if they are new, but vets like Ricochet I think are savvy enough to navigate those waters. It's young talent like Swerve and Hobbs who are wasting time.

If Jarrett was never going to win the tournament, and the winner was predetermined - why not sell tickets to Jarrett losing in the finals to get the bigger heat? Weird move when you're struggling to find characters or angles that viewers are actually interested in. Everyone except the winner is getting beat in some way, just another obvious opportunity to make money and grow interest, that gets fumbled. Its a similar situation to when Vince booked Austin to lose to Lesnar in the first round of a tournament. Austin walked out over it because its short-sighted to have that match and result when there's millions of dollars in potential future booking, by making that loss happen in another way.

Jeff Jarrett had done the seemingly impossible and made himself one of the biggest babyfaces in the company. So much of the audience after his promo wanted to see him go on and win the tournament. Okay, even if he isn't going on to win, have him get the the final.
When I saw he was against a wildcard, I thought they might announce a week before the match that it was Dustin Rhodes. Let two guys who were on the road with Owen and worked with him go out and put on something different in the first round, with a classic Southern style match. Have him throw the guitar away when Sonjay Dutt or his wife try to hand it to him and say that he's going to do this the right way, get the clean win and shake hands with Dustin afterwards and cement himself as a babyface.
The Adam Page stuff could have been saved for another week, and another angle. Especially when he beats Jeff Jarrett by wrestling as a heel, and then acts like a babyface when the Young Bucks try to recruit him.
It's booking so schizophrenic that I thought I was watching a TNA show from the Vince Russo era.

  • @wbcwinnipegbeltcollector

I was excited to see where it went
I figured since its for a "Shot at wembley" Jarrett wasnt winning, but atleast let him win one match in the bracket
Hangman has a baked in story with the Bucks and Omega, he already has had Swerves number
So we Had a awesome promo with 0 payoff 60% of which you couldnt air due to time restraints, then he loses to a guy who didnt need that as a return
And it kills the investment in the tournament from fans of owen hart who wanted to see one of his old friends have a go

It would be fine if they used that as a launching point to make Adam Page a super heel or something (he is naturally unlikeable) but I'm guessing that really isn't going to happen. They should have just had Jeff host the tournament and present the men's prize at the end with Owen's widow handling the female side.

This has as much to do with Tony always trying to have a big surprise angle. The fans have speculated for weeks that the open spot in the tournament would be Hangman, and the plan all along was for him to win to set up he and Swerve. Everything was already in motion, and you cant call an audible that late in the game. You see how that worked out with Wrestlemania this year, it became a shitsh...., wait, it worked out just fine. However, who do you replace Hangman with? Their only other options arent cleared to wrestle.
Tony should have watched, and squashed the video. If he didnt know that that was going to make JJ sympathetic with fans, he is a moron.
