- I have owned this car now for more than a year, I know it well the good and the bad and in between...this is my first and last Maserati i will ever buy and here's why.....A comprehensive review of the Maserati Ghibli S
Had mine for 3 years, love it, smile every time I get into it. Still get folks that want a photo beside it.

So the "Maserati Ghibli S" is a bumpy car that rattles & the seats squeak & the switches & gizmos are cheap,cheap,cheap...but its safe & it sounds like a tiger....I love it & hate it at the same time...my mind is melting!

That's a very fair review IMO given your experiences. I think the problems are many, the main one being in Australia, all these luxury cars cost two to three times what the Americans pay. The other, the Chrysler parts sharing. The FIAT group really damaged Maserati when they decided to break it away from Ferrari. I have the GranTurismo which was built under the old Ferrari partnership with Ferrari engines and parts. Many years now, excellent build quality. Enjoyed your video. Nice one.
Those type of cars don’t need “tech”, just as middle-aged men don’t need cap’s, t-shirts and tattoo’s to look like a teenager.....

As a former 2015 Ghibli owner, I agree with his review 100%. Rattle in my sunroof was never resolved. The stereo sound was embarrassing to say the least. It was a head-turner, but very low quality car. I sold mine last year right before the mandatory $3,500.00 US brake replacement. Good riddance

Love this honest review. Between 2004--2008, I owned a 2002 Maserati Cambiocorsa Spyder. I describe that car as a car that everyone else was excited about, but I hated owning. My funniest story about that car. I lived in the Bay Area in California. Highways are less than perfect, part of my commute was past the Oakland Arena where the Raiders and Warriors played. There was uneven pavement on the freeway almost as I passed by. It would jar the car so that the hood would crack open a bit. I had the F1 transmission, which had a feature where if the car downshifted from 6 to 1, with the hood unlatched, the car would not move from 1st gear upwards, so I had to pull over on a crowded freeway to push the hood down before I could go on with my day. ...the reason for this was because they used a lightweight aluminum for the hood, yet, skimped on the hood latch mechanism to actually hold it down in real world conditions.
That's pretty much the best review i've ever come across.

I used to work at Avis a few years ago and the Chrysler products we got were so bad they were hilarious. Jeep Wranglers with 12k and 9k with completely blown transmission seals, Fiat 500s with broken ignition barrels that would almost fall out of the steering column, challengers that would shut off while driving for no reason ( happened to me 3 times with 3 different cars under normal city driving, no abuse), we got a Ghibli once and an older guy rented it for two weeks for a trip, it has 9k on it, he brought it back after two days saying the whole car was broken ( wtf? ) he was actually talking about all the rattles, the driver seat stopped working, the infotaiment system was buggy and laggy they are complete piles its crazy people spend this much money. Btw if you look at the interiors of these Ghiblis and then look at a Dodge Grand Caravan you will recognize ALOT of buttons and trim pieces, think about that when you are about to buy a 150k Maserati lol.
I own a ghibli sq4 and i love it had the car for 4 years now and 73k. Had no hicups at all other than changing oil and normal maintenance not a problem at all. I would most definitely buy another one. The random things that this man is talking about is b.s. I live in Pennsylvania and even the snow was no match for my ghibli. By far one of the best vehicles I have ever owned.
My 2011 Mondeo has loads of tech features. Blind spot sensors, auto dimming rear vision mirror, proximity key's, keyless entry, bluetooth, distance control cruise control, auto dipping headlights, auto wipers, active headlamps, hill assist, lane departure warning (wheel vibrates) sunroof, voice recognition, leather and usual nice things like seat warmers and cup holders....couple of them. 14k second hand with 100,000 on the clock. Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue as prestigious though.

Its not a house, you paid 130 for the car but sell it for 70. This means you paid 60 for a 200k car... people need to stop comparing the car money wise like a house. Its a car, they ALWAYS drop in value.. it's a car... as far as tech, it gets old too fast. And it gets cheap too fast. So you'll find people with a KIA thinking its as prestige as a Maserati or better just because it too has the latest tech - NO.

@AlfaEricWashDC The car market is similar, but not the same. He chose to buy what the equivalent of what ahouse in Compton is. He thought the value would either stay the same or go up because it was California, but it's still Compton so it tanked.
I agree with you on the car market, they all lose value nowadays, some just lose it faster than others. I think that's what Danny is saying of this Maserati, he expects it to lose some value but based on his previous luxury cars and how they never lost value as fast, never thought the Maserati would either.
With the tech, yes I agree with you, it changes so often that things get outdated in an instant. What Danny is saying here for this car is that it's an expensive car and for the tech available at the time of design and manufacture, Maserati could have added a lot more and gave customers a much better product and still made money.
As he said it's a 2014 car and some technology that was available in 2012 still was not in the car (two year old technology missing) that's not very good from Maserati, especially as technology is fast paced, that's all the more reason it should have been in the car.

Just buy a used one and you will get your money's worth out of it. That gear shaft is a big hassle, though--especially if you are in a hurry. Although there are a few things I don't like, every time I start the car and hear that amazing sound I forgive all I don't like.

I would not buy this car used I could own a Mercedes s class and maintenance would be cheaper

@@Jayreacts75 sorry I meant e class the e class in Canada goes for the same price as the Ghibli with the same mileage a e63 with 60,000 km goes for around $70,000 and because of my Mercedes hook ups I would pay cheaper for maintenance on the e63 than the Maserati Ghibli but that's what I would do because of my Mercedes hook ups
By the way, I bought a brand new fully-loaded Ford Fusion Titanium in 2013 and there were two rattling noises that were driving my nuts. I was pissed, but I knew it wasn't a luxury vehicle. In any case, I eventually found the source of every rattle and fixed them. But if I had paid more than $60K, I would have been livid and would have demanded the dealer to fix every single squeak and rattle.
This confirms what I always thought about Maseratis... that fast and sporting (and expensive) as they are, the quality is simply not there. Ever since the BiTurbo, which was a dog, and worse than that, a dog with serious mechanical issues, I have had little faith in Mazers. In fact, I think that company is trading mostly on its name alone, and that is heading rapidly downhill. There are so many great cars for that kind of money which are so much better! Personally, my own BMW 128i (with MT) is about as "exotic" a car as I will ever need.

I still like ghibli (apart of the interior design), but I would prefers sq4, it seems to have an interesting and smart fwd system......anyway, maybe you can try Alfieri after 2020, I hope it will worth every penny

They did make good cars before. I know the GranTurismo was 100 percent Maserati, not Chrysler. The old Quattroporte apparently had the hand of Ferrari. They should have been grouped with Ferrari not fiat.

Sorry to hear you had all the rattles man. Owned my 2014 Ghibli for 1.5 years now and haven’t gotten any rattle yet, thankfully. Recently checked out the new 2018 Ghibli gransport and I’ve gotta say, the build quality is much improved, more leather, better seats/steering wheel. Much more loaded with technology as well. If you wish, please check out the facelifted Ghibli :) But I understand if you wanna try something new or still don’t like it haha.

If you haven't bought one already I would like to tell you to buy one that is at least a 2018 model year because the quality of the car was increased by alot. If you are still going to buy an older one you should take a look at the Zegna ones because at least they look better on the inside.
@@tthedestroyer4348 I totally agree with you. Interior, exterior, tech features, and infotainment have been updated and improved for 2018+ models. Leather and Alcantara and soft plastic. ADAS full package. Better than my previous Audi and BMW. I also own a Porsche and I love my 2018 Maserati SQ4. Now, I agree that the best financial choice is to buy it gently used less than 1 year to absorb the depreciation (that BTW is something that all the luxury sports sedans have).

I honestly think Massrati purposely gives their cars rattles to give it a more hand made feel. That's the way I see it. It keeps you awake while you're driving lol. Which is kind of the whole point of driving a Maserati. No stupid tech nonsense

Good review. Funny thing is all the items you mentioned (folding mirrors, blind spot indicator, adaptive cruise control) were standard on our 2011 Ford Mondeo. And it was built like a tank! Not surprised you no longer own it.

Ok Sir, the 2018 version has been totally renewed and has all the driving assistance stuff. I've heard the improvements are tremendous. Yours is the very 1st version, too bad if you were'nt satisfied but this is the kind of risk you take when you buy a car designed on a totally new platform: nobody knows what it's going to be after 2 years. The same happened to Porsche with the first version of Cayenne, it was plenty of flaws and had to improve a lot over the years. Same with the Panamera.

I have a 2014 Ghibli SQ4 in the US and I cannot agree with you more. Even though I love the car and love being able to say that I drive a Maserati, I would not buy one again. It drives really well, looks amazing but those rattles drive me insane. My Mercedes GLE that has almost hit 40000 miles makes no noises at all even though it is cheaper new. Maserati have to fix their build quality issues.
I have no rattles in mine. I guess it depends on the specific vehicle.

My uncle just got one yesterday. 2016 Ghibli S Q4 with 16k miles for 32k. It's nice, but I'd rather get a 2016+ Audi s6. The s6 is much faster and has more power. Ya it's little smaller, but I'd rather take the audi.

Not attempting to prop up Cadillac here but to help illustrate your point on features, as a comparison a 2008 Cadillac STS (fully optioned brand new was about $75k US) had blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control (available since '05), automatic wipers (since '05), automatic high-beams (since '05), lane departure detection, magnetic ride control (since '05), and multi-color, multi-display HUD (since '05).

I chose the 2019 Harley Street Glide Special instead of buying a new car, but heck, I’m in Southern California where it never rains . We do have a 96 Land Cruiser in near mint condition... it’s a beast. All the kids on the block around here have Ferraris or Lambos and the Audi Benz and BMW is very popular. How bout a Tesla ? I don’t know if I could do the electric thing... but Harley Davidson has the new Live Wire electric Motorcycle...
For a lot less money your better off buying a Porsche Macan GTS, better performance with a lot better reliability…however the Maserati badge is still something that demands presence and is still such a cool car. I’m convinced now with the MC20 and the hybrid vehicles and the new Granturismo that Maserati will improve dramatically

I may be the odd man out but I have none of these problems with my '15 ghibli sq4. That being said, I purchased used with a majority of the depreciation eaten by the previous owner.

2014-2016 is mediocre, 2017 good, 2019 great.
But the smart money says wait until it's 2 years old and buy it for 30k and it's a fucking steal that outclasses everything else in that price range.
my 4200 maserati cambiacorsa 2004 is more solid and quiet than the 911 I had. no rattles. these new maserati cars are not for me the real deal, they are playing with the name.
You know why it rattles?? Maserati is owned by Chrysler. Chrysler doesn't have the reputation for fine workmanship.
Nothing comes from Chrysler other than a couple of switches (windows and turn lights). Everything else is made in Italy under Maserati and Ferrari specifications.

My 3 BMWs have been horrendous. My 2014 Jag F-Type V8S, tuned to 650hp, has been my best car in 40 years of driving.
Such a beautiful name and body shape of the car just can't deal with the odds thank you for listing the good in the bad on this car reviw car.. I wonder hows they built now 2020🤔

i bought my Ghibli S Q4 in 2014. Overall - he is right. I won't repeat what he said, dime a dozen issues, bad engineering everywhere etc. Nevertheless, I still love this car. Fully admit it's not worth the money new - competitors offer cars globs better. But - they all bored me at the time, and they still bore me. Drove the panamera (superb quality - would wipe it's butt with the ghibli) I'd still take my ghibli over it, just looks so much better to me. Drove the BMW 5 series, far better engineered car, booooring, would take my ghibli over it. Benz E - quality fit and finish are not even comparable to ghibli - it's multiple classes better, still ghibli. the car hits the spot for me. now would I buy another Mazer new again? no - it's a rip off. There is just no other way to put it. But, I'd definitely buy a used one. Mine is worth $25k now (on top of everything awful depreciation) but i can't imagine a better looking, more exciting car for $25k. it literally has a ferrari derived super competent engine with a great design, sexy exhaust note - for $25k - for the love of god...
The look and sound so damn good, and I really don't mind the lack of tech. The 14/15 q4s have dropped into the 30k price range (and seemed such a good value) I have been looking into for a daily driver. Hard to find something that has a sexy look, sound, is fast and AWD and 4 doors to put the kids in. I got so excited to see find these until I started doing research.
Thank god for you tube and doing research because you aren't the only one saying things like this. Was between this and the Audi S4 (which is so plain looking and sounding), but I cant stand squeaks and rattles. I keep seeing why these dropped to my price range.
Thanks for the review! I was thinking of buying a Ghibli... But hearing that so many people have these rattle issues and Maserati told me that they dont know of any rattle issues proofes that they didnt work on improving the build quality. Also I wonder - the rattle issues are an obvious sign for poor quality.... But what about the hidden issues? Engine, electric stuff and so on... how durable and reliable ist that? Too bad... I'd Love to have a Ghibli, But due to the loss of trust in their quality and the significant depreciation, it would probably give me worries rather than fun

The problem with Maserati is, Fiat purchased Chrysler and Maserati is also under the Fiat Group. All Maseratis have a Ferrari drive train but, the rest was probably designed by someone at Chrysler. The new Maserati SUV is built on the Jeep platform. Their are so many bits and pieces from Chrysler on all new Maseratis. Maserati needs to bring their lineup into 2017 and beyond. If they don't step their game up and get to the business of making the brand stand out from the rest, they'll loose a lot of new and old customers. As a matter of fact. I was going to buy a Maserati but, thinking about their poor build quality on all the new models, I decided to buy a Range Rover HSE and I love it.

Darrell Tuttle the Maserati Levante (SUV) is not built/based on a Jeep platform. It is based on the Ghibli/Quattroporte's platform. Originally they intended to use a Jeep platform, although they scraped that idea (and gladly they did) and went with their own platform to use.

The Ghibli is the one and only car I have witnessed blow a transmission while driving on the freeway. I saw a new white Ghibli pass me, then later a loud grinding noise and finally saw the car with its hazard lights on and grinding its way to the shoulder.

The Maserati's I've driven just make me feel good, they've got bags of character and style & any minor quality issues they do have can always be rectified with a little thought & ingenuity. If squeaks & rattles drive you nuts, it's easier to stick with the crowd - there's any number of bland, completely soul less german shit boxes you can get for the same money.

Hey Daniel, get ready for my essay...
Regarding Maserati and the Ghibli and Quattroporte - they are absolute stunners but feel like a rushed car just to get into the market. As they’re new, the quality just isn’t there yet as well. I admire the look of them and the sound, but the fact that they share SO many parts with the FIAT/Chrysler group would always deter me from dropping any money on one. I personally would only buy a Maserati Granturismo - again, they are stunners and sound incredible but are starting to show their age from a technology stand point and performance (the MC stradale for example is about 4.7 to 100 km/h, which is pretty weak considering they charge the higher 300s for one.
As a replacement to the Ghibli, I’d highly recommend the Mercedes-AMG C63 S - there are plenty for sale on the used market in, so you won’t get slugged unnecessarily as well.
Perhaps an Audi RS6 or a BMW M5, but I think the AMG best suits you; you want a quiet and calm cruiser for business but can flick a button and can have an absolute hoot; the C63 S does this better than any of its competition.
You could try the Giulia but similarly to Maserati, I’d just wait until quality and reliability has been accomplished.
Regarding your 458 and how you’re getting a payout, I’m unsure how much you’ll get and whether you’d want to put more towards another car, but please do not buy a Huracán - unless you really want to take the depreciation hit, they’re not worth it.
Buy a Gallardo Superleggera or LP560, or get an older Aventador - these all will hold value well versus an LP610 (unless it’s a cheaper LP610 of course)
I’m a Ferrari man and would love to see you in another 458 - I know the market quite well and know 458 Spiders will always be valuable no matter what. Besides the 458 Speciale Aperta (which is unattainable), it’s Ferrari’s Last naturally aspirated V8 open top. It’s a brilliant car to enjoy and can be an investment too.
This has been a huge comment but I’m happy to discuss anything further but I see you with a C63 S & a 458 Spider
Best bang for buck and both will not lose money or a lot.

Like any Italian product. Built with gorgeous looks and love. But like any Italian luxury product. They’re each made to have their individual flaws or uniqueness to it. No Italian product is made the same.
I own the Maserati Ghibli SQ4. He is 100% correct. I have the same issues. The car is garbage. If you are considering purchasing any Maserati please do not make the same mistake that I made which was to buy on impulse without doing the research. DO NOT BUY A MASERATI!

Can u please test drive the Alfa Romeo Guilia quadrofoglio.... it is so cool and I think it would suit your purpose so well. The 6 cylinder engine in them purrs and sounds epic. It's 4 door and looks absolutely beautiful but is not over the top!!
It's a shame that you really cannot purchase a Maserati and expect it to be a quality vehicle with the accoutrements of even a Lexus that cost one third of the price. They are attractive cars, and the engine sound great, but the quality and the durability and the reliability are total disasters. Mercedes-Benz is not that much better, a beautiful Mercedes that is 6 or 7 years old only keeps about 20 to 25% of its value because the reliability is so poor and to repair it is so expensive.
The Speedo is out on a allot of cars made in the EU. My 530 (UK Version) is also out by 4-5 miles per hour.

I think the squeaks and rattles have been the key cause of your dissatisfaction (you refer to them several times) in turn this has soured your view across many other aspects. I can only imagine the car you have is a rogue (Friday afternoon) finish as I do not believe these squeaks / rattles would be common to all Ghibli's regardless of mileage. The rest of the comments, " Chrysler parts" etc... well I guess not a surprise given the owners of the company and I think actually fit ok into the general look of the car. I wonder if you had the 2017 or 18 model now available whether you would have a far more pleasurable experience? Thanks for the video....
correct from 2016 on they have fixed a lot of the issues, however my issues are common in a lot of the 2014 and 15's - i recently took it to the dealer and they have fixed a lot of the squeeks to there credit - however the sunroof is now even worse.....they took all the lining out but still its not good - for the money this should not happen, quality control is not good. they were to busy rushing to get the car out - agreed the car looks great and sounds awesome
Interior, exterior, tech features, and infotainment have been updated and improved for 2018+ models. Leather and Alcantara and soft plastic. ADAS full package. Better than my previous Audi and BMW. I also own a Porsche and I love my 2018 Maserati SQ4. Now, I agree that the best financial choice is to buy it gently used less than 1 year to absorb the depreciation (that BTW is something that all the luxury sports sedans have). The fact that it stands out from the crowd is for sure. I got a lot of appreciation in real life.
Maserati is for the people do double median income. If you can't afford to do the brake at the Dealership and ended up doing it yourself alone, you get that result. 1. You must have some bills in your pocket to buy the proper tools, to go to homedepot and buy the TORQUE WRENCH that is not at the LOW-END price or fail again. Read the manual and tight the bolt right amount of pounds again. PROBLEM SOLVED.
Thank you so much for this review. I WAS in the process of purchasing a quattroporte because the price point is so attractive...but now i know why. The build quality on Maserati is poor & by the time I pay it off it'll be worth less then a nissan altima...
How much would you pay for this car new and if they didn't come with the Ferrari motor, but some kind of run of the mill 180kw V6.

This was a pretty neat review. It’s a gorgeous, interesting, and quick car, but the build quality is awful. It really ruins your confidence when everything feels loose and rattly.
