How to make your own multisamples on the Kross 2

- I turn some sounds of my childhood keyboard Casio SK-1 into a multisample on my Korg Kross 2. And it was fun! :)
Update! About the distortion: I worded that poorly in the video. What I ment to say was, that the distortion happened while recording this video's audio. The actual samples and the multisample are free of distortions. - Hudba
Thanks for this video. I searched everywhere and you were the only one to really show if it's possible to create multisample programs and import my own fave synth sounds to the kross.
I am? I thought everyone would know by now that the KK2 can be used as a sampler, but the manual doesn't tell you. Well, thanks for letting me know my video helped! 😃
A joy! Really useful and complete, you put real time here and as other said this will help generations to come. I was so vague with my sampling video and now i can sleep well knowing there is a proper tutorial here. Really enjoy your humour too. It's a quality stamp. Cheers from Uruguay
Only one thing i would mention: RamM and RamS actually means mono and stereo, so you could actually double your polyphony by using the samples from RamM bank. If using RamS it doesn't matter which sample you select :D1-L or D1-R, it will use both hard panned. But you can select which one if using RamM.
Thanks for the info, that is a good thing to know! 👍
Thank you. You help to us a lot! Please, never delete this video. It will serve to many generations.
Thank you ver much! I have no intention to delete this video, but you know ... I can't exclude the possibility that YT will find a reason to do that for me ;)
Synthesaurus, you should get the frigging Nobel Peace Prize for a discovery this epic! It is a complicated thing to do that requires mastery of the Kross and so I have had to come back to this video more than once. The fact that you figured this out is amazing.
Well, I agree, especially that I should get the Nobel Peace Prize for this. 😁 Here's the thing: I yelled at the head Korg guy (back then) about this on Facebook, saying "Dude! The Korg Kross 2 CAN do samples! Why is that not in the manual? Why are you NOT PROMOTING THE KORG KROSS 2 BEING ABLE TO SAMPLE??!!" His answer was "It was a marketing decision, I couldn't do anything about it". And that's that.
Fantastic ! The kross 2 is really able to make great things...but it's not easy...it needs some work and a lot of time! Thank you for helping us! Your videos are always helpful and Very clear! Synthesaurus, you're the Best!
Thank you very much for that, Mike! And you give me reason to address a thing here. Of course, I really appreciate hearing things like "Synthesaurus, you're the Best!" and "Thank you for helping us!". Because that is the very reason I started the Synthesaurus Show in the first place: helping people to be creative.
Now, my dear visitor, you might know that I run a Patreon, on which you can support me with a dollar. It's here: www.patreon.com/synthesaurus
But that sh*t don't matter to me. Well, to be exact, it kinda does. If you support Synthesaurus with your dollar, I will make it easier for me to buy new stuff, to make better videos about synths (new PC, better camera, better video editing software, or even buy other synths).
BUT: THIS kind of comment, like Mike's, is FAAAR more valuable than any kind of subscription on my Patreon page to me. My motor is: help & support people understand the technical aspects of their gear, so they can focus on the creative part, a.k.a. MAKING music, instead of having to figure out which buttons to press. That's Synthesaurus' mission, and that's why I really do appreciate comments like this.
Great efforts to explain about sampling
Thanks for the details. The Parameter Guide says very little about "Converting Current Bank to Program" on page 205.
Hell ya, thanks dude! Too bad about no mono/legato samples, but this means I can import drum machine samples and map them to actual keys outside the 16 note range corresponding to their midi note numbers! Rejoice
Thank you. This is really useful!
Great job!!!!! That means I can tranfer some sounds of my friend's Triton LE on my KK2 ? That's a great news !!!!! Thank you so much for your amazing job !!!!
I am not sure if that's true, but go for it, and share the result!
Cant believe you figured this out. I like how light cheap and easy the kross 2 is, but making a chromatic sample patch is a nearly epic feat. When i assign to C7, when the pitches down from there are less than 1/2 step/. I get a ‘fifth’ interval from octave to octave. (Where it normally would be c to c, i get c to g. I was not able to catch on to this till i went to your making drum kits video and then took a while to finally get to the ‘drum kits’ in the menu list by holding shift-global-menu
Hola synthesaurus muchas gracias por dedicar tu tiempo para mostrarnos y enseñarnos estos pasos mágicos para samplear nuestro k2 (del cual Korg nunca nos dijo), muchas muchas gracias desde ARgentina. Salud!
Hello synthesaurus, thank you very much for dedicating your time to show us and teach us these magical steps to sample our k2 (which Korg never told us about), many many thanks from Argentina. Health!
Hola and Guten Tag to Argentina! Hearing from Kross-fellows all over the world always puts me in a good mood! Health to you too, mi amigo! 😊

For what?
Brilliant 👏 Thank you for this video
Thank you very much,dude!🙏🙏🙏
Hey Synthasauras! I just want to thank you for all the time and effort you put into your videos. I have a Korg Kross 1 88 and recently got a Korg Kross 2 61. Could you talk about other formats this keyboard can load and how that could be helpful? And are there any other ways to convert, say a software plugin sound like Keyscape, to the Kross 2? Again, thank you so much for always helping out with your videos. Cheers!
Thank you very much, gaura, I am always glad to hear my stuff is helping peeps. But I am terribly sorry I know nothing about converting formats.
Thank you, really useful🙏🤘
Most easiest explanation.... This will help many kk2 users. I am having a query though, why can't the multisamples play portamento and mono legato ? Whenever is switch to mono and legato , they sound out of tune and portamento cannot be applied? Any solution?
That right there might be the reason why the Kross 2 was not marketed as a "sampling keyboard": Although the Kross 2 can be used as a sampler, Korg didn't want you to know. That's why the procedure I describe in my video is nowhere to be found in the manual. The Kross 2 wasn't SUPPOSED to be a sampling keyboard, so the functions you are looking for can't be properly done on the Kross 2.
@@SynthesaurusRex sounds cool.. So should just accept the fact that it can't do more than playing the sample as drumkit with filters velocity and fx .
Awesome. I have an old Casio CTK-691 that actually had about 50 really good organ patches. So now I'm sampling my favourites and hoping I can squeeze them in on the Kross 2. I'm limiting sample lengths to 3s to save space so no long sustained chords (it's a bit like using a Mellotron!) I need to work out if I can safely Unload samples from EXPCM and reload them later, such that any program using them will still work?
The reason why I stopped experimenting with sampling on the KK2 is exactly that: we do not know how much data we can squeeze into it. If we overdo it, it can result in a memory overflow and render the machine unusable. I strongly recommend to get a sampling device instead.
I have a problem in kross 2 on the screen I see not enough samole memory why ? What can i do becouse my korg Donat want Concerto bank to program
I don't understand what you are saying.
@@SynthesaurusRex I try load samoles to empty slot and convert to a samples and on a screen korg show me" not enough sample memory" why
Because you don't have enough sample memory. 😉 No, seriously, I don't know why. I never had that message. Maybe your sample is too long?
Hello!! Thanks a lot for you video. I actually cant figure out how to change banks. When i have the sampler active turned on i cant change banks... but this is not why i am here. I just want to know if you can put the pads with velocity sensitive sounds. Thanks a lot!
No, you can't. You can not put velocity on the Kross 2 sample pads.
@@SynthesaurusRex thanks for your answer! I thought that although it was not possible, the pads are velocity sensitive. But if not even in roland phantom 8 they arent...why they should be on a korg kross 2. Thanks again! Love your videos
I have the following problem: i m loading kmp files from other korg keyboards, all ok the sounds are loaded and when i go to play the keys tha samples cutting their notes. When you load kmp file piano and you have realease 40 the keyboard cutting notes. When you loading guitar kmp and you go to play chords, noted arr cutted. It's polyphony problem? Why this happening only to ram sounds and not to rom sounds?
I am sorry, but I can't help you with that, because I know nothing about the kmp file format.
So I've been wondering if it is possible to create a drumkit using different samples on the same key so they trigger according to velocity parameters. Is that possible?
Yes. In 8:08, when creating the drumkit, you can see the tabs OS1, OS2, OS3, OS4. And on the bottom right you see the crossfader function. With that function, you can set the assigned sound to a velocity range for each of the 4 oscillators.
@@SynthesaurusRex Thank you, Lord Synthesaurus. It looks like a big project but I want to try. The idea is to record music with the electronic kit and then play the midi through the kross using the created samples.
Great! I think you can also record it directly in the Kross 2 with the line in or the mic in. So no need to record it first into Audacity.
That is absolutely true. And I would love to learn how to do that by watching a tutorial video about that! Could you do that? I'm serioulsy asking that! Because I always do my sample recordings with Audacity, because I need those sample wavs for other devices and purposes. So, if you did a video showing how to directly sample into your Kross - I'd sure watch that, like that, subscribe to that, and leave an enthusiastic comment on that! :)
No problem, I will do that, I only need a little bit of time. I have lots of other project right now as you can see on my channel
I can see you're busy there, so take your time! I'm just saying: If you do that video, and I think there's a good amount of demand for that, I won't have to do it. 😉
@@SynthesaurusRex I will do it, no problem. We could both be doing it, because you have a dedicated Kross audience
Nice option. Can you edit the samples that you record and use them from the pads? Im thinking something like a classic mpc style of sampling. Sometimes i may record something with my zoom, or make a sound with my voice etc and i would love to have something to cut part of it and rearrange it, in a intuitive way. Also something except sampling, can i send midi via usb to the korg to use the built in sounds?
Hi... Very useful video...Thx a lot... Just wanted to ask that how many sample tones we can make in K2...
Thank you, Tejas! Thing is: I do not understand your question. Could you rephrase that?
@@SynthesaurusRex ..... hi.... how many samples i can take and convert it to tone ...that is my query ... when i took a sample and convert the whole bank into a tone for the 2nd time ... K2 shows "not enough memory"...i think u got my query now...
Oh, I think I get it now! I'm sorry, I haven't looked into that that deeply in the matter. But I'm quite sure I will get to that point in the near future. And when I'm there, I'll surely let you know what I find! :)
Can we sample only one audio with all keys?
i.e. located in middle (C5).
Yes, we can :)
Partly! It will adjust the sound only to the left keys, but not to the treble ones. If you however sample the rightmost C then it will create all the keys to the left...
Hi, can you play the samples in Poly? thanks :)
Yes.
@@SynthesaurusRex how many voices? 8?
Can you suggest a good keyboard amplifier or speaker for this keyboard in a budget range ??
Who, me? No. But maybe someone else can. Anyone? Help the man! :)
Go for flat response studio monitors that have good bass response, any sort of 'cube' Amp if you don't mind being mono, otherwise get an old Hi-Fi system and or crank it through your home stereo. You really are better off with big speakers that can handle bottom end for keyboards like the Kross.
studio monitors in my opinion is the way to go, you will have a nice frequency response and stereo image etc, something useful with the variety of sounds and uses of the kross, also active monitor have the amp inside them so you need only to power them and connect the korg. For budget options, it depents on your budget, it is not the cheapest solution but it is worth it. In my opinion find something you like that is a bit over your budget and search then in the used market, most of them are built to last and a lot budget monitors end up for sale when someone is upgrading for more professional studio use
sir after inserting all the sample files then saved but couldnt find my saved file.. pls help
I'd love to help you with that, but you need to be a bit more specific. Name the moment in the video (the second of the video) where your problem occurs, and try to give an exact explanation of what happens instead of what is supposed to be happening.
@@SynthesaurusRex thanks sir for your reoply ,.,,, indeed i went too fast with the process. sop i had watch the video several times and got it right ,, thanx sir for your support. God bless
Hi I did all the process but in the drumkit part I don't saw the sample I put in the Kross 2 on rams
I'm sorry but it's hard to help you with that, without details. Where exactly in the video does your K2 NOT do what is shown? Please give the exact second, and please describe what your K2 does INSTEAD of what is shown in the video.

You can make multisamples of any instrument you want.

Good sir, here is the thing: I do not give my phone number just like that in public. I hope you understand that. I will gladly help you on zoom, jitsi, or any free online conference app of your liking.
Is there limit Witherspoon the polyphony?
Listen. In that video, I am only showing that it is possible to do chromatic sampling on the KK2. Since it's super-inconvenient to do that, I haven't looked into it much further, and use other devices to do that.
Is there a limit on how many notes can be in a multi-sample? Could it be a different sample for each note?
I don't know, because I never tested out what the KK2's memory can handle. Because I don't know if it would actually render my KK2 unusable, because it was not officially made to used that way.
Do you know of a workaround for this on the kross 1?
No. And believe me: I tried. And here's an official warning to you, whitrummel: DO NOT try to use inofficial "software expansions", that are out there for the KK1. It will ruin your firmware and break your Kross! I had people come crying to me back in 2015 "I installed that inofficial sampling software on my KK1, and now it's broken, WHAT SHALL I DO?? Please help me, mighty Synthesaurus! You are my only hope!" But there was no hope for those fools. Even the factory reset didn't work anymore. So, hands off trying to turn your KK1 into a sampler! Get some budget samplers instead, like the Microgranny or the Elektron Model Samples.
@@SynthesaurusRex I'm so glad you replied thank you. I was like thinking that maybe even the KK2 is just a firmware update on the 1 and trying with an official KK2 firmware update on the KK1, but I won't touch it now.

hi... how can i delete samples i created in RAMS memory.....
Good question! Since I'm relatively new to the Kross 2 myself, I haven't figured that out yet. But if I do, I'll let you know! :)
@@SynthesaurusRex
thx buddy....
plz take my another query .... how many sample tones we can create in K2... and can we increase our memory RamS from 128mb to some GB"s....if yes then,.... how...
Hold your horses, buddy! When I'm going to look into the matter of how the Kross 2 actually deals and manages its RamS, I'll let you and everbody know about my findings. 😉 All I need for that is time. Which I don't have much of currently, because I'm doing this Synthesaurus thing as a hobby. If enough people supported patreon.com/synthesaurus , I could spend more time on Kross & synth matters. Just saying. 😉
Is this possible on korg krome ex
I don't know.
Does the multisampling in the Kross2 have velocity sensitivity?
Yes.
@@SynthesaurusRex How can I apply the velocity sensitivity for the multisample?
Like with any other sound program. Please forgive me if I'm not going into details here on how to do that. You do have to watch my Kross tutorial series episodes. All of them. You have to understand that I can't give individual Kross-lessons on how to do things. Well, actually, I could, but it's MUCH more cost-effective if you just watch my free tutorials :)
@@marcchesterrivera7598 Every .pcg/program has the ability to be velocity sensitive. In the very first page of every program you will find two columns saying TONE ADJUST and EG. Under TONE ADJUST the bottom one says Vel. Intensity, just crank that up and it will turn any previously non velocity sensitive sound to a velocity sensitive one, I've done that to all my organs, harpsichords and synth leads on my Kross. You can also do it in combi mode. If you are clever you can also have multisamples change their timbre by going to another sample depending on how intense the velocity is so when you hit it harder it gets brighter or more resonant or whatever you want, even a completely different sample. I think you have four samples for each 'oscillator'.
Hey, Synthesaurus, thanks for all your useful videos. They really helped me get to grips with my new Korg Kross 2. I’ve made my first track and posted it here - czcams.com/video/ty_QdmO_jy8/video.html . I’ve given you a link in the description, as it would have taken me a lot longer without your videos. You might notice I use your Double LFO program for chords (comes in at bar 7) - love that sound! And your tips helped me to make the fizzing panning fireworks effects - 2 oscillators panning alternately with LFO on the pitch as well. It’s great when you have a sound in your head and you can make it happen. Thanks, mate.
