On the contrary, I think the oil companies will love cars this like. If the current growth of oil consumption continues as it is, the oil companies will be very hard pressed to keep up with the demand. They will need to spend hundreds of billions of dollars (US) if not trillions to find new sources of crude. Thus, the price of oil will skyrocket and the oil companies will be blamed for the price increases. (Psst. Oil prices are determined by supply and demand.)

It changed my mind about EV's. Most are way too expensive and none that I've seen have a viable solar alternative. Plus, you have to wait no matter what you want so you might as well wait for the coolest one on the block.
Originally, this platform was conceived before BEVs existed. I was disappointed but then I decided efficiency was much more important than any other consideration, especially if it could get 150-200 mpg. Then, Aptera announced the "BEV" version, and I was overjoyed. Next, I thought it would be best if they used "motor-in-wheel", and they did that also. Finally, I expected they would add PV panels, someday, probably in a decade or so. But, no, they added them pre-production. I would have $paid$ twice the price.

Go ahead and reserve one. It only costs $100 ($70 if you order through one of the numerous CZcamsrs who review the car) and is refundable if you change your mind. You can also change your mind about colors and other options later. The $70 just holds your place in line, you have to complete the order later but the $70 goes towards the purchase price.

There is a real use for this. Sometimes familys need a second car that is just a small commuter car to get 1-2 people to and from places, while the other car is a bigger SUV type for hauling stuff around. For under 20k this would really find its home for a lot of people looking for a car to just get around that has essentially no fuel cost.
It starts at around $30,000 (depending on what you spec, even a little less than that price). but yeah, this is def appealing.

I think this could be an excellent commuter car. If they can manage to ramp up manufacturing in the next couple years, it could revolutionize the EV world but also the car industry.
This is what i was waiting for in an EV. It basically never has to charge for my commute. Afaik there is only one other manufacturer close to production.

I put my order in when there were less than 1000 pre-orders. I wanted this platform since the '90s. I didn't expect anyone to appreciate it or build it. So, when I saw two guys were making my dream come true, I was instantly sold.

The things efficient evs can do is simply amazing. Don’t solve ev problems by adding more batteries solve it by being efficient.
That works great...for a single person or couple who isn't transporting anything more than a few bags of groceries. People use vehicles for more than just *that* use case. This is a very useful design for a vehicle that bridges the gap between moped/motorcycle and full size car, it is also useful as a secondary car, it's not very useful for a family of 5 picking up a months worth of groceries at a bulk goods store. For that last use case, a larger vehicle with larger and highly energy dense batteries that is primarily outlet charged works better.
150 miles on Level 1 charging. Could be much more with Level 2!
So looking forward for this vehicle to be mass produced. I was going to buy a slingshot but having a vehicle that charges by solor power is important to me.

Would I want to try one? Absolutely!
What most people really want/need in reality: 2 seats, 2 doors, a large trunk and 300-400 mile range for those occasional long trips that crop up. And Aptera is selling one with up to 400 miles of range which I think is a great sweet spot for range. Need more capacity occasionally? Rent.
They allow you to add a battery capable of 1000 miles. A little pricey, but man, no range anxiety there.
@@glennxserge You are absolutely correct, and if you absolutely need that capacity then go for it! I was basing my comment on value of range per dollar spent & the typical range where most people would feel comfortable owning it. I see it all the time. 250 miles of range makes many people anxious. 300-400 of range and that anxiety tends to evaporate.
The milage options are 250, 400, 600 and 1000

Why own a massive chunky car for something you do maybe 5% of the time or less? Why waste so much 95% of the time? You save money just renting a car when you need to carry a family of 5 for 600 miles.

The targeted operational space for the Aptera seems to be well targeted by the product offering. Most (USA) private vehicles are occupied by 1 or 2 persons 90% of the time. The average car racks up 12 000 miles a year or 32 miles a day. Solar gain of up to 40 miles/ day eliminates fuel cost. (Even if it only gets half the stated goal, the actual fuel cost will be tiny compared to an ice.
I expect that I will only get around 20 miles per day where I live in Iowa, and the cost of full solar is till a no-brainer.

@@meatisomalley I feel a much more compelling argument for the solar is the freedom and convenience of plugging in significantly less. This can make the vehicle much more practical for apartment dwellers and others that don't garage their vehicles at night.
Yep. It's going to replace my ICE when i can get my hands on one. Going to order the full package even though i don't really need the solar hatch and the tent. But better have it and never need it than needing and not having it.

Perfection in a country like Cyprus where we have 350 sunny days or more per year. The entire country could function on solar energy. It is very sad that they didn't catch up yet. I have been advocating this type of car for the past 25 years
I've ordered the 1000 mi flavor and just can't wait to get mine! This vehicle is engineered for the purpose it serves and it's designers have achieved what many knew was possible but not done until now. All that aside, it will be fun to drive and a great value. Awesome
agreed, but the 1000 mile is very expensive. a lot of added weight and cost for range that almost nobody will need to use.

In my case, I'll surely need the extra power for how I'll use my Aptera and I anticipate that there will be some very practical capabilities my full pack can provide where power is needed otherwise. Each owner will make their own determination and I'm sure that Aptera will provide great guidance through their Ambassadors to help prospective owners make the best decision. Great comment & thanks!

I'm totally thinking about the same spec in black color and will reserve one asap. What's your Aptera color? Do you invest in this company as well? Aptera product is the most logical forward thinking and functional vehicle tech better than any auto maker. With solar panels, drivers will have less worry about running out of juice while driving around for whatever errands or duties. Just too bad Aptera did not incorporate the idea of battery swapping for customer so we all can enjoy better battery tech in the future.
This vehicle is very modular and would be surprised if aptera would not offer battery upgrades in the future.

I have been following Aptera for at least 10 years now. I'll believe it when it really comes out.
The first Aptera Inc. was liquidated in 2011 after a Detroit CEO forced the founders out in 2009 and couldn't fund his change in direction. The present Aptera Corp was founded in 2019 with a brand new design. They are making amazing progress towards a goal that many of us want to see happen. I am doing everything I can to help - including investing, placing an early pre-order, and acting as a brand ambassador. If it fails, that doesn't mean it was never worth doing.
I've pre-ordered a "Sol"; 40 kW (400 mi range), AWD, full solar. Love the concept, philosophy, efficiency, meaningful solar capability, wow factor, and price. Waiting (maybe not so) patiently. They've come a long ways. I think they're going to deliver.

Here is my concern: I have a slight vision disability as I lost the sight in one eye. Your (proposed) camera option for side mirrors, would do two things, decrease aerodynamic drag, and two eliminate blind spots. This would help me and everyone else immensely. So what do I and others need to do? Who do we right to? How do we get a campaign going?

@@MsAjax409 Arizona heat. Just ensure before buying if the battery pack has Liquid cooling. If you park in sunlight all day, ask them if the vehicle will start cooling the battery pack if ambient temperatures are high. This is extremely important in places like AZ, South CA etc.

The problem for me right now is the state I live in... this would be classfied as an "autocycle" which is different from a motorcycle. You can drive it with a regular drivers license, but where I live autocycles are not permitted to operate on interstate highways... yet. Be careful and check the laws in your state before making a buying decision. I would love to buy one, but not as long as I can't drive it on most highways in my state.
Also it is registered as a motorcycle, and you have to insure it as a motorcycle which may be more expensive...
Generally speaking, motorcycles are much less to insure than cars: I have over 400,000 miles on motorcycles.

Yes absolutely!! I originally ordered one in 2005 and I reordered one early 2022 the all wheel off-road package with solar can't wait!! Already can visualize driving it on dirt roads & in the snow. It's awesome in the daydreams I know it'll be even better in reality. Exactly the process I went through in 2019 with the Tesla model 3 and it has not disappointed. Cheers from Northern California!!!

I'm impressed. This is the direction that EV design needs to go. Solar range and battery pack range are optimized due to Aptera’s extremely high efficiency that uses so little energy - only 100 watt-hours per mile. Other EVs, like SUV’s & Trucks, use 600 - 700Wh per mile, thus requiring larger, heavier and more expensive battery packs. Makes so much sense, I just reserved one.

What a unique design solar car.
The 250 mile range one, with no solar power and all-wheel drive. Has to be a rocket ship in terms of acceleration.
I really like that they're pushing the envelope 30-40 mi a day of free driving with the full solar package. Personally I'm going wake until the initial "wow this is new" euphoria phase, wears down and definitely pick one up on the used Market.
Hopefully by then all the kinks will be ironed out, I can resume what's left of the warranty.

I think that is a practical idea. Unfortunately, I have more than one friend and I can't afford two cars. Maybe in the future there will be additional vehicles using most of the same design and technology that can accommodate more passengers.

It sounds like a great concept until you realize that solar cars are not a viable alternative.
That's pretty neat. It could work well for daily back and forth to work or even a food delivery person. The only drawback would be that's it's a 2 seater and you would need another vehicle in a lot of circumstances. It's good to see these electric vehicles advancing. Now we need to make sure the infrastructure to support them on a broader scale is in place as well. I am also curious how we can create so much more electricity without burning fossil fuels or harming the environment in other ways to do so and making all of this pointless.
The main thing is that with this type of vehicle, you don't need to create so much more electricity. It partially charges itself and when there's absolutely no sun, it still uses 3x less electricity per mile than your average EV.
Efficiency really is the way to go.
It’s what MORE manufacturers need to do. Hopefully Aptera will start a trend that others will follow.
Remember Sono and LIGHTYEAR have also started on this trend of SEVs ( solar electric vehicles).
Aptera’s extreme effeciency ( 3x better than other EVs) is the only way it can make practical use of solar charging,, not to mention just being much cheaper to charge.
The average occupancy rate of a car in the US is about 1.7 people. If you have a family, you will need another car. But, for most people in most instances, this 2-seater works just fine.

This is my plan for my daughters first car expecting it will serve her needs through high-school (by time I get it) and college. Have had reservation for a while. Love hearing they might start making commercial deliveries soon.

@@aussieideasman8498 I would GLADLY take on an Aptera were they to GIVE me one to do long range daily drive tests. I drive my Chevy Bolt over a hundred miles 5 days a week. We'd know if the skin-cooling works pretty quickly after a few runs!!

I think this is a good looking car very much a future look to it ,its something i would very much consider buying if it came to australia and as production goes on i am sure they will be able to refine it even better ,they say they have so many orders i do hope it gets into full production
