  • Don’t Forget Your Schooling: Our Pastoral Obligations
    (Heb 13:7-14)
    I. We are to regard faithful teachers (v. 7-8)
    A. Mimic the Christian character and maturity observed in the faithful (v.7)
    B. Jesus Christ is the antidote against compromised and false teaching (v.8)
II. We are to reject false teachings (v. 9-14)
    A. Be discerning about what you hear and believe. (v.9)
    B. Be decisive about why you believe what you believe (v.10-12)
    a. A Comparison of Two Systems:
    C. Be dedicated in your pursuit of the Christian life. (v.13-14)
    a. You have a cross to bear (v.13) [cf., Matt 16:24-27; Luke 12:16-21]
    1. You will be evaluated by Christ.
    2. We carry our cross actively, by faithfully enduring the reproach of the world and by laying aside the old habits and lust patterns of our flesh to live out the precepts of Scripture. By doing so, we yield our lives to the Holy Spirit who matures our faith with the result of our being delivered from the present consequences of sin as well as being positively recompensed at the judgment seat of Christ, in preparation for our work in His Kingdom.
    b. You have a city to behold (v.14)
    1. The current city of Jerusalem would be judged (Mt. 24:1-2; Luke 19:41-44; 21:20-24)
    2. The New Jerusalem will last an eternity (Rev 21:3-22)
    Points to Ponder:
    1. Avoid anything that promotes adding to God’s grace and the work of Christ. Salvation is by faith alone, in Christ alone.
    2. Sound doctrine is always founded on the Word and never in human wisdom (philosophy or psychology). Make it your goal to know the truth when you hear it, by comparing it to Scripture. But just as important, be sure you can recognize that which is false when you hear it, and be able to state why it is not correct.
