    About Zara Larsson:
I get what you're saying; it may not make sense for me to include her here but I really wanted to
I thought she was mediocre because of the type of songs she performs and her overall visuals and style oriented brand. I was SHOCKED by her skills and I thought that if I had this type of reaction maybe some of y'all would react like this too.
    She's an impressive vocalist!

one of the best comment down here. as a fan yes i admitted it that she's not the high-belting singer like mariah carey or jessie J but her stage presence is unbeatable, and the main reason why she's loved and still has a big fanbase around her is her songwriting skills. her early years vocals are quite shaky and unstable but she improved a lot since 1989 tour era (2014-2015) - now.

This generation seems so obsessed with high belts and vocal runs and things that anyone who can't do those is accused of being "bad". I don't even know where this obsession comes from, but I mean, common, music is not just about that. Take Carole King and Karen Carpenter for example. They hardly belted or did super impressive vocal runs when singing, but no one ever said they were bad artists/singers. Their music is marvellous and can touch so many hearts.
The singers mentioned in this video are by no way "vocalists", but more than that, they are great artists who have decent vocal abilities to deliver their artistry. That's how I'm gonna put it.

You don`t have to be a vocal powerhouse to be a pop star. Depends on what kind of pop you do. Take Sheeran - he`s just fine as he is. His songs don`t need much vocal athletics. Same with Swift. You can be an awesome country artist without a particularly great voice. Perry is nothing special, but sufficient to do her job. And so on. They`re all quite successful.
In the end, let´s not measure every pop talent against the so-called Greats ( Carey, Houston, etc) Not everything they sing sounds good either and you can get a bellyache of all that belting and highest-note-contests. Sometimes less is more imho.

Rihanna actually has the potential to be a vocalist! She seemed to care a lot about how she sounds early in her career by experimenting many techniques and sounds. But something i noticed after 2010 is that she started to care less about how she sounds on stage. Often it is a problem of breath control which is why she sounds bad most of the time when she sings up-tempo songs like we found a love, s and m etc.. Notice how amazing she sounds when she sings her slow tempo songs. She can easily access her upper and lower belt though she lost some of it due to smoking. I think if she works on her breathing and take some vocal lessons she can be called a vocalist. I hope we get to see more of vocalihanna on R9. Also one thing i love about rihanna is that she almost 90 % of the time never lip-synchs.

I honestly dunno bout her upper range but like her lows sounded a lot more stable than usual... prolly on par with Lauren Jauregui tbh
Her belts don't sound too forced now. They sound great.

Taylor definitely could belt above E5 consistently with little more training, But it's not her style, Taylor has a lot potential in all parts of her voice, but she never really focused on her vocals, especially on upper belts and her falsetto in 6th octave and also her agility. Taylor could be quite agile if she wanted. Taylor always only focused on her lower register and mid belts. What people need to realise is this style of melismatic singing originated in the black gospel churches and then made its way to pop music through the popular black female singers over many decades, it’s great, but there are other styles of singing that should be appreciated for their own merits. You don’t have to hit the high notes or belt for your life to be a ‘good singer’. A singer like Billie Eillish or Angele are great examples. Also when people talk about great vocalists I never hear rock vocalists mentioned, only soul divas and that’s a problem. We need to change the conversation around what ‘Good’ singing is.

I have seen many people covering Taylor Swift's songs (since she has so many hits)... And, over the years, I've come to realize that she has one big strength (in my opinion)... And that is: emoting and intonation, specially when it comes to portraying the "characters" in her songs (or dialogue). You can always hear if the speaker is sad, angry, happy, nostalgic, vulnerable, free, etc. You can also tell nuance on her lines, for example: you can distinguish playful sarcasm (a joke) from passive-agressive sarcasm (resentment), or real confidence from pretence (someone who is still hurt but trying to power through). It's very... Theather-esque, despite it being pop music. And I'm sure this is something she considers carefully while recording the songs. I've heard many better vocalists singing her songs, with different arrangements, but sometimes there's something off... And I think it's when their "voice acting" isn't good, it just sounds off, less expressive, less intentional. It ruins the delivery of the lines.

Rihanna is my fave but I agree that she is the epitome of 'good but not that good'. She's exuded a lot of potential in all areas of her voice since her debut and over the years has improved in terms of pitch, nasality, tonal quality, and low notes but has lost some of her agility, comfort, and range. She's very inconsistent live and I think a lot of it is intentional because I feel like part of her brand is having that idgaf attitude and singing in the moment rather than caring a whole lot about how she sounds. I get the appeal of her singing style but wish she took herself a little more seriously when singing live because she really can sound amazing when she's in the zone. But I agree that you don't have to be an amazing vocalist always, what sets Rihanna apart and makes her a successful artist is her instantly recognizable gritty, Caribbean tone that everyone can't get enough of and is where, I believe, the talent lies.

Rihanna’s first 10,000 hours of practice was all self taught, which makes her the most unique singer performer of her decade and she’s improved over the years. her 2007 live concert in Manchester showed her performing style is like no existing artist, it’s fresh. It’s different but it’s very good. She’s judged harshly because she didn’t get trained to sing like everyone else, but that’s what makes her the one of the most memorable artist today

What is "lately" coz we haven't heard Rihanna perform since 2016 and she's been improving since her debut. Rihanna isn't a vocal powerhouse because she does not want to be. She does use technique, it's just not what is commonly considered perfect in the singing community. For example on ANTI (the album where she lets everyone know that She rejects all norm conformity in favour of expressing herself the way she wants to and she feels has earned the right to) she has higher where she's clearly & deliberately straining her voice ( and not just in the climax as with Diamonds to express vocal style, but she's stressing her vocal cords throughout the song ), in love on the brain she's belting, singing in falsetto as well as her head voice transitioning smoothly between ranges, and in James Joint we see her control over her voice, tone & texture. So she's skilled in vocal technique.

Taylor can do with her voice much more than she's showing. I would love to see her do more vocally challenging songs to show the world. Taylor's vocal style is about storytelling, her lack of some skills is not because of not potential or not singing talent, but because she never wanted to be a vocalist, which is quite sad, because she has that much potential. I always when see her, i have a feeling like if she's hiding her voice little bit. I don't know if it's because lack of confidence or just really not interest to be powerful vocalist.
