I'm from Chengdu, a southwestern city in China. I have to say that the first metro line here opened in 2010 and it reached 13 metro lines with 518 km in 2020(yes, only in ten years). Right now more than five metro lines are under construction and will open by 2025. As planned, Chengdu metro will reach more than 50 lines with more than 2000 km within this century, connecting the cities around Chengdu. Also, trams, Chinese domestic trains(including high-speed trains) and mountain sightseeing trains are not included in Chengdu metro.

In China, because there are too many cities that need to build subways, the central government has formulated several conditions to build subways:
    1. For the budgetary revenue of local finance, this generally needs to exceed 10 billion yuan.
    2. The city's GDP needs to exceed 100 billion yuan.
    3. The total population of the city needs to exceed 7 million, and the population of the urban area needs to exceed 3 million.
    4. For the planned subway route, the hourly one-way peak passenger flow can exceed 30,000.
Therefore, many cities that cannot meet the above conditions at the same time began to find ways to bypass the restrictions, such as building light rail, or connecting with other big cities with ground rail transit, etc.😂

It is unclear how to count it. In London the underground and the suburban trains are different systems, but in Paris one becomes another, the same system, often very convenient. In Chicago, the trains are mostly on the surface so it shouldn't really count as UNDERground. The word "metro" doesn't resolve this issue!!! In many places the underground is extremely expensive to build, digging at extreme depths, but in others it is nothing more than a system of trains that only occasionally dive underground.

The metro uses 3rd rail and drives on the right.
The RER has double decker trains that wouldn't fit in the metro tunnels, uses overhead power and drives on the left.
