REI Presents: How To Run 100 Miles

- In September 2017, I stepped up to the starting line of the Run Rabbit Run 100 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, alongside my friend Jayson Sime. The race is a 102.9-mile ultramarathon with 20,000 feet of elevation gain, which is no small feat for a couple of guys who don’t know what they’re doing.
Jayson had talked me into it, and if I were to be completely honest, I’d say we were there to test out his life philosophy, which is basically that you can do anything you dream up, as long as you put in the work and refuse to quit. That ethic has worked for him in almost every other area of life, despite growing up in poverty, one of six children with no father, and dyslexia.
In the six months leading up to the race, we figured since we weren’t naturally talented runners, the best thing we could do is work hard. So we ran 50- to 70-mile weeks all summer, and went through a full range of feelings: fear, regret, sadness, FOMO, hunger, thirst, exhaustion, pain, and joy. And gluttony, which is not a feeling, but what happens after you run 20 or more miles.
How did the race go? You can watch our film, How to Run 100 Miles, to find out. No spoilers here.

This and Billy Yang’s video inspired me to get into trail running and shoot for a 100 miler someday. The first I watched these were a year ago. I’ve been running 4 - 5 times a week, increasing the total weekly distance every week. I’ve since lost 90 lbs. Two weeks ago, I ran my first 100 miler: Headlands Hundred. I finished and I’m still glowing two weeks later. Look up James Marinas on Strava. That’s me.

Marine Corps Boot camp 1983, I watched my best friend from high school get sick with pneumonia. He got a 24 hour medical chit to be bed ridden, Senior DI walks in tells him if he dont get up and fall in formation to train, he's kicking him out. We both wanted to me Marines ever sense we were 9 year old kids, the DI's words hurt me. I ran over to his bunk and told him I wasn't going to make it with out him, please get up. He got up and struggled for a few days but he got better, and we both graduated in the fall of "83".
He thinks to this day I inspired him, truth is he was always been my inspiration. We have been best friends for 4o years now.
We both feel so fortunate to have been buddy's for all these years. What a great short movie, it made me call my friend.

I graduated in June. I will never forget sitting on Mont Mother Fucker after hell week, and having a DI place the eagle, globe and anchor in my palm, and then having them serve us hot chow, and calling us Marines. That sun set was special.
I will never forget it.

After being told as a very fit (OK skinny) 19yrd old I would never run a marathon because of back issues, I have now finished three, all after 35 years old. I am now training for my 1st 50 mile in October 2020 at a ripe age of 43. This was a very touching documentary. The saying still holds true for me, don't ever say I can't do something because I will go do it.

@@MrBeerwizard great, i wasnt the only one :D
I turned 43 this year, I’ve always loved running but my shin always give out on me. I made a decision that 43 will be the beginning of great things to come. I ran my very first 10k a week ago, no injuries whatsoever!!! After watching this, I set a new goal for myself, not a 100mile quite yet but a marathon for now. I am the farthest from being athletic but this documentary inspired me so much ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you
Also had huge problems with my shins for like 10 years. Solution? A friend of mine gave me a book about proper triathlet technique and in the running chapter it mentioned proper running technique. You HAVE to land on your middle foot. It will make loud, unfamiliar sounds and it feels to be inefficient or bad for your joints at first, but it isnt. Your weight is being compensated by your body moving forward while the foot is on the ground (= force on middle foot builds up over time) + you have some in / out movement of the foot which further increases that time. This combined with proper running shoes from a video analyis = NO SHIN PAIN ANYMORE (but calve cramps maybe if you are not used to this running style, then your calves need to be up first :)). But they are meant to take stress and can build, your shins cant :)
Der Kanal plenty of people get shin splints with proper form. The clinical experience seems to be pointing to weak/immobile ankles which leads to over pronation. Over compensating with stability shoes are only going to make those immobilities and muscle imbalances worse.
i highly recommend that you read the book Born to run.
@@tonyjaradev I second this greatly. Read this book! Do not use any type of footwear that compensates for a natural weakness your particular body might have. Instead, take time and a patient approach to strengthening those weaknesses naturally. If running an Ultra in your bare feet is a little too far to the extreme for you, great. But, I highly suggest going as far as some zero-drop shoes with a more natural toe-box shape so you can use your amazingly capable feet the way the nature (mostly) intended. I have and continue to cycle through low-weight zero-drop shoes (Like an Altar Superior), Vibram Five Fingers and barefoot....and with each cycle my feet, ankles, legs get stronger, more capable and closer to those of our ancestors. Most importantly the runs get more and more enjoyable!
@@quaditz This. I had injury after injury through high school and college. Then I read born to run and tried running barefoot for a few months to learn the form and it was very awkward and new feeling for a long time. That was 10 years ago and I haven't had a single injury since!
I think the title is genius! You click on it thinking it's a tutorial, then you find out it's a story of two friends who won't let each other quit. Both would've left you feeling motivated at the end whether it was a tutorial or an inspiring story.
Bravo!! Was gonna skip my run today because it snowed....... heading out the door now - Thanks man!

This is one of the most well done documentaries I’ve watched on ultras. Two average guys doing something extraordinary. I occasionally return to watch this when I need a little bit of motivation to keep pushing forward in my training.
Thanks, Ian. We appreciate hearing that.
This video almost makes me want to run an ultra... ALMOST. My last full marathon was about 6 years ago and I think I’ve forgotten about the pain, maybe it’s time to refresh my memory.
Yes. I'm leaving this comment to hear from you if you ever do!
guys, 100 miles at 36 hours is a pace of 2.8 miles per hour. It is definitely doable, with training. Sure factor in some breaks, maybe even a couple hour naps, lets just say 100 miles in 30 hours. That a pace of 3.33 miles per hour. It seems like it is a matter of staying with it, despite the pain, fear, doubt etc.....
It’s not a face pace but can be a brutal mind game. It’s also a bit physically challenging
Especially with 20k feet of elevation gain.
danpt2000 it's a lot more than just metrics my friend
i probably could hardly stay up 36 hours without a nap imagine running the whole time
I took maybe 5 naps through my first attempted independent 100 mile run..
I actually kinda feel like to would be easier, because you’d have to be moving the whole time
@@Alex-lt5ho Plus you have adrenaline to get through without sleep
Thanks. I did over 100 ultras. Finished only one hundred miler. This captures the experience completely. Best race film ever
This moment @ 20:48 is telling you everything about what you feel during a race. You feel every emotion you have.
What a beautifull rollercoaster in just 20 seconds or so.
What a great documentary! I just went from not being able to run further than 500 m to a half in 3 months, to a full marathon under a year and now just finished my first Trail ultra under the two year mark of when I started.
Andy LeBlanc well done man. I did my first half in October with only three weeks training. I’ve done 3 more half’s since and I have my first marathon this weekend and my first 50 mile ultra in 2 months. I hope your still running!
Congratulations! What type of times did you post?
Keep moving
I'm inspired by these comments, second half marathon in a out eight weeks!

I won’t complain after a 12 mile run again
If you look up the definition of 'friend' in the dictironary, Jason's picture is there.
When you look up the definition of dictionary in the dictionary, it has a picture of Goggins.
I ran a 21k once and at the 18k mark, my legs shut down and i just sat down, holding back my tears knowing that i failed myself, then my sister boosted my morale, i ran to the finish line, took me 3hrs and 28mins to finish a half marathon, that was slow but i finished. So proud of this guys.
What a great story!👍😭
@Vaughn Glugla Sometimes it's cool to just jump in the deep end and YOLO it. It may have taken OP 3 and a half hours but they did it, and now they know they CAN do it.
This was not a semi-rad story.... it was a FULL ON RAD STORY!!! Absolutely loved it and am now searching for my first ultra. Thanks to all who put this together.
Took me three years to be good at rugby I was shit for three years but then one season I ended up scoring 3 trys in one game and then I ended up being one of the best players in the team
i did not expect this to be so inspiring, just wow on so many levels not just running.
"Just keep moving", that'll be my internal motto as I run my first 10k today! Super inspiring guys.
Shot better than most movies. I love it! I very much enjoy running even though I am not very good at it and these videos are just an incredible reminder of how much I like running and being able to move and the feeling of sore muscles when you know you've gone to the max.
Thanks for sharing the kudos, Karolina! We are glad to hear you enjoyed the video!
Ah man. I ran this race this year, just a week and a half ago. This is all so beautiful, relatable and incredible. I'm sitting here crying thinking about how I had all the same thoughts as y'all. Ten miles to go, pushing 30 minute miles, thinking I could be out for 36 hours.
The feeling you have on those final six miles, a mixture of dread and relief. Knowing it's almost over, but also knowing you have almost 4k feet of descent on absolutely destroyed legs.
What a gorgeous documentary, thank you for sharing
This video inspired me , I want to do a 100 mile someday, I've done things in my life I'm proud of, I have 4 black belts in different martial arts, I've benched 500lbs, I did a 1/2 marathon ,followed by a full marathon, and I've done a few triathlons ( no Ironman yet but on day ) I'm almost 60 now soon I'll be retired and I'll have more time to train, so Lord willing I'll do the Ironman and a 100 mile ultra marathon, at least once😀👍💪🤠🏋️♂️🥋🏊♂️🚴♂️🏃♂️🙏🏅

We love your 2018 gloves.
This is a great running story! 50k was my longest race, the amazing Griffith Park Trail Ultra in Los Angeles. 100 miles is so nutty, plus the hundreds of practice miles.... Crazy!
This is the most amazing story/ movie ever in the world!! I am watching this everyday to motivate me to get healthy and back to the way I wasn’t I have gone through a back injury, drug addiction to the pain pills for that injury, my mother passing and dad committing suicide and the my favorite aunt and uncle that we’re my second parents pass away all by the time I was 25. I guess I replaced the pain pills with food.. now I’m 70 pounds over weight when I used to be a runner and lifter. I don’t eat anymore like that or unhealthy but I sure don’t work out and I lay in bed all day and sleep off and on. Depression has really got to me the past years.. I’m 28 now and have nothing to show for it or anything to be proud of. I lost all I ever had and knew and lost myself. I’m alone. But for the first time this film... makes me feel like I’m not alone becasue I have myself. And I’m all I need. Yeah a best friend would be nice but it’s the inner battle that gets you far. And that love and friendship you have for Jason is amazing and beautiful. And the love Jason has for you!! I’m just gluten to get up.. it’s 3am and I should sleep but in the morning when I wake up.. I’ll get up.. and I’ll commit, and I’ll just keep moving. Thank you so so so much for this incredible film. You have no idea how much you have touched me and changed my life. Thank you Brendon and Jason!!
Wow watching Jayson overcome with emotion at the finish line was such a powerful moment. And seeing his friend there, supporting him. Amazing, I definitely teared up watching that scene. I have so much respect for you guys and everyone should hope to have a great friendship like we saw here.

I had a Major give me a car ride from the commissary once, and he was telling me it's so nice out right now i'm gonna go on a short little run. So i said, "like 2-3 miles", "no, 10 miles" he said he could run a 50 mile ultra marathon without stopping to walk at all.
Totally nailed it. Perfect mixture of crazy, pain, grit, and emotions. This will either make everyone who views this want to run one or make people never try it. Either way, fantastic narration and depiction of what it takes.
I keep coming back to this video und rewatching it from time to time. And it makes me cry all the time. So inspiring! :-)

So inspiring. Thanks for putting this together guys... all of you!
This popped up as an ad as I was watching Ochem tutorials for my final exams....let me just say the lessons and inspiration can be applied to many situations. Heading for an A in O-chem tomorrow morning. 💪🏼
Thanks for lessons...On my first Half Marathon Day. 25/02/2018.
