  • Hi Everyone and welcome to WaysOutBack. I just bought a new truck to tow the trailer on those back roads. Its a 2002 Ford Ranger with 186 000km on it. Pretty good body but needs some work. Please follow along as i get it road worthy and then modified it for some off road fun and adventures.

Been driving my ‘98 for 21 years. 212k and I’m keeping it. Glitches here and there; that’s all.

Mine is a "Frankenstein" ... 98 ranger with a 2000 explorer 302, 44-06 manual case, 08 bed and lights, 08 front clip, 07 seats, 07 mirrors, 99 explorer disc brake rear axle,... it's a never ending project lol these things are cheap and easy to fix, keep going lol

That sounds Awesome.... love the idea of a manual transfer case. It’s true it’s never ending but they are great little trucks. I’d love to see your truck you should do a video and post it. 😄

waysoutback- I might just do that! I love my little truck. I've had it for 10+ years and it's a project that's "ongoing"

All that salt on the roads up north really does some damage to the frames. I have an '02 Ranger, 4L 4x4 and there is only a little surface rust on the frame. It's been my daily driver for almost 20 years, but hasn't really been the same since I hit a horse on the way home from work one morning. Insurance paid for the body work to fix it up. They are good little trucks in my experience.

I recently bout a 2003 Ranger FX4 with a 3 liter, similar issue in the driver’s rear bumper (more of a crack actually) and a bit more rust than yours. And it’s 22 degrees and I’ve got to come up with $460 for a new heater core. Just subbed to see your progress and learn from you! Good luck!

They are great trucks... you will love it! I almost bought a full size but I’m so glad I stuck with the ranger. I’ve been taking mine narrow little atv roads out in the bush...... It handles it no problem. That stinks about the heater core... once you get the kinks worked out you will love it! Any questions just ask I’ll definitely share what I know. Thanks for subscribing.

The rust on the door bottoms is a Ford design issue, I have an ‘07 FX4, Ford decided to put in a drain plug/outlet, not sure what you would call it, in the bottom of the doors. One day after a rain storm I wondered why there was water dripping from the bottom of my drivers door, I took out the plugs and about a litre of water drained out of there. I forgot to do the passenger side due to being busy with work. Driver door bottom, little to no rust, passenger door needs to be replaced because of the rust.
Another design issue is the rust on the quarter panels behind the rear wheels, Ford decided to put numerous plates/brackets back there to support the panel behind the wheel. This is the perfect place to accumulate dirt, dust, ice, road salt. Not very accessible unless you’re a contortionist and your pressure washer has a short curved wand to reach up into there to clean it out.
I love the Rangers, I’m on my third, I started off with Fords Bronco 2, in ‘89.

I hear you... on mine the door drains were plugged full of grease and pine needles. If the bodies of these trucks lasted a little better there would be tons on the road still. I under oil my own vehicles and really soak those seams. Looks like it helps a bit. I just wish they would use a little less salt on the roads. 😬

Sounds like you know one end of a wrench from another. Looking fwd to seeing the results. Once it's in order, you'll be ready to do some serious bushwacking. I like the idea of a bush bumper, but regardless what you decide, it might be wise to have a tow hook up front? Have fun!

Thanks Bushmoose, I will have fun!.... good suggestions. I’ve definitely been thinking about building some kind of bumper set up..... I kind of like the idea of installing a receiver in the front to match the one in the back so I could use a winch in both places.... Maybe build it into a bush bumper. Thanks for watching.
