Great observation about the loud music almost drowning out the conversation at the beginning. Nothing in Ren’s music or videos is done by accident, and I think your analysis is spot on.
Now that is the truth. The attention to detail and preparation to do these one take vids is mind boggling.
Unless you’ve ever tried yourself it’s almost impossible to comprehend how much work goes into this type of shoot.
I'm mostly here to also recommend Ren x Chinchilla Chalk Outlines (live), and How To Be Me live. Both of those really show his vocal talent.
"The Hunger" was a sick rap song he did.
Chalk outlines and how to be me live rent free in my head..not just a showcase of talent but the genuine relatable emotions..those songs live rent free in my head but they deserve to be paid to be there...they've helped me alot
I think the low vocal mix is a very deliberate stylistic choice. He's showing you his internal mental state throughout this piece - right from the intro. BTW that transition from grunting out of internal anger/desperation into calmly answering the questions in a detached manner, spoke absolute volumes. That hit so f'ing hard.
FYI, the therapist in this video was the news broadcaster in Muse's 2nd law album... she has a great voice

I too am stalking Ren 🤔. I am totally obsessed and can not get enough of him. His personal life as well as his music/art. I'm so glad to have found your channel and have it confirmed that I'm not the only person to be transfixed by this genius, bard, griot, maestro, that is Ren. Wish I could donate my body parts that he may live. Prayers 💛💜💛
think the music is whats in his head, as he goes through therapy, and thats why its so loud. i have never had an artist hit my psyche like Ren, and as you said, best of luck to him and wish him the best of luck with his health

Ren creates videos which are on a Short Movie level. I cannot relate to his vids as "music videos", I feel they are Performances, theatrical and cinematic. And I love it )
OMG I was wondering exactly the same for the loudness over her voice. I think it could go both ways, as Ren is known for having subtle things in his production, but he also produces all his songs himself without a big studio behind, so mixing levels could also just be an overlook in this case. I wanna believe it's intended ;)
I think it’s intentional it’s meant to show that he’s not really listening and he feels disconnected

For some people like me I really relate to this because I have a mutli diagnosis of some mental issues and the medication could often "fix" one aspect of my mental struggle but it would completely inflame the other two. For people like me medications are almost impossible answers, and then we have to sit there and deal with the self worth struggle bus of "talking" to a therapist which helps some people but not everyone
Great reaction to this amazing song. I'm loving his music his on my rotation with Tom and Nf songs. Just also wanted to let you know if you do t already, Ren has a gofundme for his treatments that he is having. He has raised a lot of mo ey that will help him and can start treatment right away now. I don't know how Ren's ADHD is, but I know with mine, I often have to struggle to hear people when there is background noise. I'd wager that the volume level of music to speech was intentional.

I see it as it's the Dark Ren (in regards to the dichotomy of Rens in "Hi Ren") that sees the doctors as the pig butcher character. Light Ren sees the therapist, Dark Ren sees the pig butcher.

I know that there's no catch-all for depression. But I think people would be suprised by how much going outside and some exercise helps. So much of people's lives is indoors and stationary now.

Ren was initially misdiagnosed... He now suffers PTSD due to doctors being so useless in his approx first 5 years of treatment... Hence the reference of pigs or maybe pigs to the slaughter... 👍

Your thought process about the conversation makes sense, but to me I feel like it’s more of the him being misdiagnosed and always told it was him.. So to me the music being louder was a play on how he’s going “crazy” in his mind always being told it was him

aha you're probably one of the only reactors I've seen pick up on why the music might be so loud while the doctor is talking.
'Sick boy, sick boy, bitten by a tick boy, this starts off as his journey with medical misdiagnosis of his Lyme Disease (an Easter Egg in 'Hi Ren' is that the back of his wheelchair has 'L.D.' written on it), and segues into social commentary.
I love your analysis that the 'music is too loud' over the dialog to convey how Ren feels overwhelmed and unable to concentrate on what's being spoken. By the way you can lose the transparent effect as well as the flip, and not even pause with Ren's works.
Fee for service US 'healthcare' is a problem in that there are financial incentives to prescribing, including kickbacks, and fraud. In nursing homes you can see stacks of boxes of blister packs of unused medications, Medicare and Medicaid paid for them as well as other insurers, pharmacy benefit manager middle men get a cut, so incentives to push as much as they can, then the nursing homes find a corrupt pharmacist to sell the unused pills to (learned this from a retired pharmacist whose wife was in a nursing home).
Pig-head and pig-butcher are a regular theme in Ren's work, both for his chronic and mental illness songs as well as his social commentary works.

rightfully or wrongfully ( no personal judgement here ) many might argue it's NOT cancer, heart disease, COPD, diabetes, etc. that kill many humans - it is the woefully inadequate mental health system itself....the therapist is essentially speaking "psycho babbel" to Ren at the beginning....

OMG. I have had every pill on the system pushed to me by Dr's of the last 15 years and the same uncaring vocal routine. The world being sick could be the reason. The depression of most could be akin to an allergic reaction to what is happening to the world, we are ALL being poisoned
I noticed the music is much louder on your reaction than others. I’ve watched about 12 of these and yours is the first that was drowning it out. Maybe they adjusted it just FYI. Perhaps listen to other reactions and compare?
