Cool to see you're watching Anna's reactions, love both of your channels... your reaction to this masterpiece was great as well... have a great day and enjoy it! Peace and love from Bavaria đđđ
Favorite quote of the entire reaction. Literally one of the best I've seen thus far. Also: big fan/follower of yours as well, your reaction was wonderfulđ«Ą
Incomplete? Yes. Listen to Ren's trilogy - The Tale of Jenny - Tale of Screech- Tale of Violet.
@@dropbarracuda Thank you đ„°
She is the first reactor I have seen mention that. Been saying that to myself from my second listen on.
Out of the like 50 reaction videos I've seen, you are the first to notice that the song doesn't actually end.
I know from experience that writing subtitles is so tedious. Thanks for including subs so non-native speakers can enjoy your reaction too. :)
Thank YOU Juliette for popping in and and even writing me a comment! â€ïž
The most heartbreaking part of this song for me is how Ren starts so confident in the conversation but slowly got broken down by his inner dialogue. The responses become increasingly more hurt by the comments made. It makes it all the more spectacular when he beats the voice into back into the void at the end.
Hi Jordan - Really great comment. I have watched Hi Ren a number of times now and I had exactly the same thoughts ⊠but then at some point it struck me that there is also a third voice. At first I think we see Ren battling back and forth between himself and the negative/disruptive part of his subconscious, and this voice has been overpowering the other voice of Hope. Just like the pendulum analogy though, Hope starts to be heard, quietly at first, but then gathering strength and defiance, rising up as the pendulum swings into the light. Thatâs my interpretation now anyway.
@@Rob-bt3ev I very much agree. When he has his moment of âpossessionâ the song reminds us of the bigger task at hand. My interpretation is heâs referring to the inner struggle that lives within all of us. And the two voices at the end were (as Ren states) known as many names. Good and evil, right and wrong, god vs Lucifer. This song is very profound and I think itâs going to affect a lot of people. If the couple reactions Iâve watched Iâve been surprised that this song is reaching such a broad range. Iâve seen reactions and comments from people in their 60s that have been responding within pure awe of the concept. Everyone sees it differently from what Iâve seen. Some respond saying itâs depression, some the devil, some their anxiety. My mans has expertly captured the human perspective in a 9 minute video. And people see it
Most uplifting for me was him standing up at the end. Did not think I would like the song but it really struck a chord with me. Really appreciate the honesty it.
I don't think he beat the malevolent voice back into the void at all. If his monologue shows anything it's that there is no "winning" against that side of us because it's eternal, it's always there, just as hope is eternal and always there. So, as he puts it so brilliantly, we need to relax, soften, and learn to dance with it.
The way he addresses the shadow self in the beginning is so naive and earnest.
You're not only analyse music and technique, you open your heart to us. This is touching and warming
â€ïž
â@@annavaskelainen Hey Anna, if you see this, I have something for your big heart đNot especially for a reaction but at least for you.
I'm pretty sure you will like it.
I saw you had liked a lot the song "Je suis malade" from Lara Fabian. Maybe you know, reading the comments on your reaction, than she always do a different interpretation of her song when she does new concert. So if you want to see something special, I could recommand you to see this version of the song in a 2003 concert : czcams.com/video/ZaimSByycsU/video.html
The end is extraordinary.
Renegades are here show love â€
I was born in Finland some 63 years ago (august) and I got very hooked up to Rens performance as I immediately resonated with it to some of Finlands signature traits, like our very deep connection to melancholy and introvert personality. I have lived through all stages of melancholy in my lifetime which can push anyone over to the dark side of life (suicides by some very close friends). My recently 'discovered' ME/CFS diagnosis is like rubbing salt in the wounds but, has also given me an explanation of why things are as they are... so for me it actually is a blessing of sorts.
I have never ever thought that a perfoming act like Rens could involuntarely get me into tears every time I listened to it (surely more than 100 times by now).
Some people out there claim that he is a reincarnation of a bard, that bad imho woul be none other than Shakespeare.
Do as Ren... learn to relax and dance with your illness it helps.
"Sisu is a Finnish concept described as stoic determination, tenacity of purpose, grit, bravery, resilience, and hardiness and is held by Finns themselves to express their national character. It is generally considered not to have a literal equivalent in English."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stiff_upper_lip
Here is some information on Ren's story, in case you didn't already know. I gathered it from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Eryn Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990, he grew up in Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, he began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony.
Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure.
Ren is currently in Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023). Renâs Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals, as well as his bones/joints.
Ren stated: "It's a lot to wrap my head around having to be away from friends, family, and a successful career, and almost feels like a total juxtaposition to the fact that my music is blowing up right now and spreading to all corners of the world, but that's life, we take the good with the bad."
Renâs recent wisdom tooth removal went well, but he is currently battling an infection following cavitation surgery, and he is not feeling well.
Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to this generation, and his work is needed in these troubling times. Here is the link to Renâs GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity
Good reading, ty.
Thanks for the info.
Thanks for this good read.
I'm not a believer, but we can all send prayers up in some form
This was an excellent, to the point, synopsis!
Wow, this was intense. A musically interesting and âin your faceâ way to describe how destructive our internal voice(s) can be.
Everyone is their own worst critic. If you feed that wolf too much it can devour you. Feed the good wolf.
We all battle inner demons. Ren taught his to play guitar, and did a duet with him. đđ
Absolutely the most compelling and heart wrenching artistic performance I have ever witnessed on You Tube ! Brilliant , thought provoking and emotionally exhausting video ! Get ready Anna it's unnerving to watch !
I am looking forward to your reaction, as all of them are very enjoyable. âHi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 6 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Renâs music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Renâs songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day.
Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard; he calls his music âbardcore.â Renâs earliest recordings on CZcams are from his time in a band called âTrick The Fox,â consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Renâs onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is âThe Mash Up.â
Renâs trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a masterâs class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal.
Renâs collaborations with Chinchilla (âChalk Outlines,â âHow to Be Me,â âSexual Healing,â âOne Dance/Drunk in Loveâ) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," âDiazepam," âPenitence,â âDear God,â âHeretic,â âDominos,â his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world.
Renâs Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out âThe Hunger,â âGenesis,â âWhat You Want,â âLosing it (FISHER rap retake),â âRight here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),â "Life is Funny," âLove Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),â âCrucify Your Culture,â âPower,â and his latest release, âBittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).â
As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of âCan't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),â that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (âBlind Eyed,â âEarned it /Mans World / Falling,â âWalking on the moon/No Diggityâ), Eden Nash (âHumble,â âOceanâ), Bibi (âCrutch,â âAhiahiaohaâ), Molly McKinna (âPenitenceâ), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (âFrench Songâ), which are all great.
"The Big Push" busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are awesome and well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," "An Englishman in New York," âBongo Bong,â âWar Pigs,â the songs "Oh My Woman," âSwan Song,â âSweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," âDignity,â and so many others are equally impressive.
In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released âSick Boiâ and âBittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),â which is another masterful work.
Wow, you are Ren's wikipedia.
Thanks for info.
Man, this is such a good recapture of like his whole cataloge.
@@Tobsson Thank you.
I cannot listen to "Hi Ren" without tears.
Great reaction Anna! Your facial expressions told how much the song affected you.
Thank you for allowing us to watch this song touch your soul, and thank you for your insight into the performance.
I know someone Finnish would appreciate how Ren introduces minor chords seemingly out of nowhere.
I wouldn't be surprised if he played in a death metal band previously... there is something special about him.
Best analysis of Ren's use of vocal qualities I've heard yet!!
I rarely leave comments, but I appreciate how you allowed yourself to enjoy Ren's music first, before technically analyzing it. It was a pleasure seeing the emotion in your eyes and your little smiles when he did something creative. I'm a fan of your reaction style!
I hope you react to Ren's "Chalk Outlines" (live version), because it's just simple, beautiful singing. I'd like to know what you think of it. Take care and best wishes.
I have watched many reactions to this brilliant piece of work, Anna. Yours was so heartfelt and endearing Thank you for that. Your ability to remain vulnerable and still so very observant of what Ren was showing us was truly amazing.

I was going to write an original comment about the quality of Anna's analysis, but you've covered it. I couldn't agree more!
For me, Ren is a new emotional category of Music, Acting & Singing combined in a new captivating Category. Your Reaction is Top Ten, â€.
When looking into this amazing reaction video, 2 min are sufficient to know that Anna has a wonderful soul. She senses Ren's feelings right from the beginning, understands the battle immediately when "good" Ren speaks for the first time. She lets Ren's pain unfold in her imagination, does not shy away, and can still analyse the musical means. Very interesting and insightful, thank you so much!
đ„°Thank YOU! xx
Let's take a second to fully understand how beautiful Anna is. Honestly, wow. What a goddess.
"Ready" to cry again with this message that is so needed to be heard and spread...looking forward to this Anna:)
Loved your reaction Anna. This is a gem with so many angles.
Very insightful analysis, heartfelt and professional at the same time!
A genius depiction of the inner struggle many people face on an everyday basis!
Creative genius x reactive genius = extreme anticipation :)
A song of vulnerability, but also strength of human spirit. A young man who has kept his 'sisu' through situations that would have defeated others. Seemed like you could feel this story coming through the music & lyrics Anna, as always! The simple setting & video style, a good vehicle that conveyed so much more of the complex battles this man has faced. I wish him every success!
Thanks Anna for breaking this all down for us! Love & Light! đđ

Wonderful analysis without turning yourself into a machine. At the same time you were deeply analyzing the song and also feeling it fully in the moment. This is the kind of intelligence we need more of, an analytical mind intertwined with the humane emotions and presence.

If you want to go down the Ren rabbit hole, then Iâd recommend The Tale of Jenny and Screech for more storytelling art, his duet How To Be Me with Chinchilla for breathtaking vocals, and his band The Big Push covering I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop for another astonishing live performance. Hope youâll take the journey
Great reaction. The tale of Jenny and Screech (full version) next please

Oh my, you are so very very good at this. Thank you
This song in particular reminded me how powerful music, well art in general, can be. I'd lost that feeling over the decades.

I LOVE watching people who get this like I did. I was nearly rolling on the floor laughing and seriously sobbing at the same time! We ALL live through this in so many ways!
I had some voice training from our music teacher in elementary school, and then mostly just listened to artists and FEEL how they're emoting in their vocal tract. I actually started from just listening. I could nail a Nat King Cole impression when I was 2-1/2 years old! (I was really precocious! LOL) I should find a good vocal coach who can teach me the technical language and help me with some of the sounds I struggle with. I do pretty good Ian Gillan, but very inconsistent with his upper screams. I can occasionally get through the entire studio CHILD IN TIME, but it has to be certain times of the day (usually late at night). I don't perform anymore because I have really messy reactions to tobacco smoke, and I've gotten even more disabled over the years, from where I started at age seven with an amputation to treat club foot. I always loved showing off even doing gymnastics in middle and high school, but over the years, fractured my spine four separate times, so I've settled into sitting on Facebook & CZcams, trying to defeat the forces of evil... I've been at it for a decade, and this song tore me UP ...and woke me up too! What a grounding pallet cleanser!
I forgot to mention: CRACK THE SKY's first three albums are both genius and tons of amazing vocal expression, and world record syncopation riffs! I mean Olympic GOLD MEDAL worthy master class in syncopation and theatrical lyricism! 1. Self titled album 2. ANIMAL NOTES 3. SAFETY IN NUMBERS... If you haven't found them before (from 1970's), you're in for a blast!
âThe more intensely that the light shone ⊠the darker the shadow it cast.â
You are a beautiful person!
Good lord, Anna. You are so good. I mean, as the audience we see it, we hear it, we experience these changes and dynamics, but your analysis opens whole new vistas of insight and understanding of what is happening musically, vocally and thematically. You are a fantastic teacher!
One can throw all the hype on one wants, this song will still be better

Watching Ren is like watching Michelangelo paint. Every time you watch it there is more to understand. Did you notice there is a hole behind the sound hole in his guitar? You can see his gown.
I didn't!
There is no hole in the back of the guitar. What you see is not the gown but the sticker the guitar manufacturer put in the instrument.
@@neurocide thx, my mistake.
It seems to me that the "Dark Ren" is actually struggling for its existence At first it tries to convince Ren that getting rid of it is risky, and that "Good Ren" needs him. Then it tries to undermine and bully "Good Ren" then it tries to intimidate him, and then, that last "I am YOU RENnnn" has a note of desperation in it. To me THAT is as profound as what the "Good Ren" has to say, and it's why "We're a coin with Two different sides" is SO important
I've watched...has to be a hundred reaction videos to this and you're the first person I've seen mention the coin.
@@Dragon-gs2qy To me that is the whole point of the piece, It's yin and yang, it's Jungian acceptance of your shadow, it's the actual meaning of the Muslim concept of Jihad Its Freud's struggle between Id and superego, It's universal and it "Goes by many names also"
The second Hoo Hoo song at the end is a demonstration of what a constructive expression of the "dark Ren" can add to your song.
Thank you for your experienced, intelligent perspective. I enjoyed and learned alot.
Unique breakdown, thanks. Subbed.
