In Australia we say 1 second = 1 kilometre (so 2000 meters would be right! 😅)

When I was growing up, my Mother said if you said after you saw lightning, 1001 1002 1003 etc. it meant that it’s 3 miles away. For every thousand it’s that many miles away. It’s funny. I’m not sure if that’s true or not…I am old enough to be your mother and it’s something I grew up with…sending hugs, love, prayers and kindness with a daily dose of encouragement, ♥️🙏🏼👍🏼🌹🇺🇸

interestingly enough....this is what google says,lol The National Weather Service recommends taking cover if the time between the lightning flash and the rumble of thunder is 30 seconds or less, which indicates the lightning is about 6 miles away or closer.

It's 1 mile away for every 5 seconds between seeing lightening and hearing them thunder.
