  • Every vocation has its challenges, including the Catholic priesthood. Fr. Scott Bailey reflects on his experiences of the most challenging parts of priestly ministry. And it's not celibacy! Fr. Scott describes the "roller coaster" of joys and sorrows in ministry, and he talks about the challenge (and blessing) that the words and actions of priests can have a big impact on others.
To pray the 7 Joys & Sorrows of St. Joseph, Fr. Scott has a video here - • How to Pray the 7 Joys...

fantastic. I’ll be praying for you and all priests. I am discerning the priesthood and this is exactly the kind of real life stuff I wanted to hear and be prepared for, should I choose to devote my life to this.

I'm so glad to hear that this was helpful! Many blessings to you in your discernment of God's will for your life. If God calls you to the priesthood, you will discover that it is an amazing life!

When did priests start with celibacy. Not

Good question! As early as the second Council of Carthage which happened in the 300s, we see that married clergy were required to remain continent with their spouse, meaning that they were not to have any sexual relations with their spouse. This can be seen reiterated in many of the early church fathers through the 4th and 5th and 6th centuries. In the 6th century, there was a gradual turn towards selecting celibate candidates only to be Bishops. The second letter in Council in the 1100s declared that marriages contracted after ordination are null and void, reiterating continence for clergy and leading to a preference for celibate clergy. Celibacy for priests became the universal practice after the Protestant Reformation and the Council of Trent in the 1500s. Of course, all of this has roots in the fact that Jesus himself was celibate and St Paul emphasizes the beauty of celibacy and its value in 1 Corinthians chapter 7.

Sorry, that should say "Second Lateran Council", not "second letter in Council "

I am a lay celibate because of heartbreak and the worst is the lack companionship. @@RisenChristDenver
