Should there be any slack in sheep an goat mesh fence when installed
Growing Pains not really
No
Third Gen fence builder here .Put them up hog tight and horse high then you got everything covered ; )
Not at all
That’s a beautiful sight seeing the machines going at it on top of the hill. 👍
Good, honest work. Men showing the best of what they do. I really liked the diagonal bracing in the low valley on the wood fence! Looks awesome and keeps that post DOWN! Congrats to all of the competitors and God Bless!
Positive and informative competition; we need more like this.
Thanks Reef Club
Great video Josh! You definitely inspire people and love that you're very thorough in your explanations!!
Excellent! Thanks for all your effort on bringing this to us.
Enjoy watching your video
My wife and I are closing on 10 acres and will need fencing come next summer. Thank you for these videos.
Rad!!
Looks like a fun time at the fencing competition. Thank you for sharing Josh.
Ur Very welcome
Loved part two Josh. It was a tough competition, but a great experience 👍🏻
Great fence and learning competition. Great work by all!
Those were some good looking fences. Great fence builders. 👍👍👍❤️wooooo
Awesome fencing video!! Looking forward to your next video.
Great Video!!! Thanks SRF!!!
Yea I have been waiting all day for this video. I know that sounds like I am making fun but I'm not. I love this channel. If I don't know something I learn on here.
looks like everyone is having a fun time :)
Hey Josh thanks for the video and thanks for sharing the video I enjoyed it
Really nice video on a topic everyone else has missed !!
Man... I need to get out of the metro area more often. Living here in the 'burbs I have almost forgotten what a decent fence looks like. The farmlands I knew as a youngster are now shopping malls. Great videos, Josh.
The farm I grew up on has been turned into a open field. When it was sold the new owner burned all the buildings down. It's sad to drive by now.
Found it I looked for this as I stated in first video, sorry I said anything. good show. Thanks.
This has been very interesting and informative...👍👍
Thanks for keeping us" posted "on this interesting competition and by the looks of it these guys know their stuff
Ur welcome Peter....thanks for being a great fan of the channel...I know you've been here for a long time buddy!
Great video those guys done a great job thank you for sharing wooo
Awesome video Josh really liked this and learned something watching this video.
As always, fantastic video Josh. Well done.
Thanks Lukey Poo....and I managed to get a special little girl in both vids!
Very interesting video. I like that evo machine alot!
These guy rock. Looks great property owner is the winner if any of these teams were to install a fence on there property.
I love the design on the wood double reverse bracing, very impressive looking and effective. All are excellent builders however.
Hi.... Thank you 🎥👍👍👍
Great videos !! Love the fence building !!!
Loved it!
Nice video. Though when you were talking about a steep hill all I could do was imagine the hills I've worked fencing on and wish they were as nicely sloped as the one they were working on.
I REALLY enjoyed these last two videos. Competition is great. But, like you said, it's more than a competition.
In the first video, the guys were saying, "This is how we do it. We think it's good. But, if you have a better way, we want to learn."
"That's how a man talks."
A virtual cookie for you, Josh, if you can identify the source of that quote. ;oD
Sounds like a bit of John Wayne
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Not a bad guess, but no. It's Chuck Conners to Tommy Kirk in "Old Yeller". Here's a virtual cookie anyway. 🍪
Yep good vid bud allways enjoy thx and godbless
good stuff! enjoyed this
Great video, Josh!
Josh Thanks for sharing your experience at the fence building competition. This is very interesting and will come in handy in the near future. Besides it gives me a chance to get some more Tools (toys) like yours before you get home and pass me up again. LOL He who dies with the most tools (toys) wins!!!!!!!! RIGHT???
Awesome video. I learned a lot
Great content Big Country!
Cool stuff man. 👍
Thanks brotha...what a great time! Don't forget we'll get more technical in the next video!
Pretty darn cool video. Thanks for the great content.
Glad ya enjoyed it Robert!
Luved the vlog.
Was hear
Fourth. Been looking forward to this since the last. Liking that hat. Woooo
Western states fence builders that fence for miles and miles, would be interesting to hear what they think. Very interesting and informative vlog here. Great field of competitors ....Thanks .
Ya got me feeling I should tear down the fence I have here and put one of these in. . . [did ya see the word FEEL?LOL] Things I never really thought about in building one of these things ~ thanks and hope more of this content comes soon...
Saturday 8:15am eastern ...we'll go over some of the bracing and wire
Very interesting video👍
All the fences were great. Yet all were different.
I just like these videos, Woo
Would like to see how there pulling the fence so tight. All that i seen has looked amazing!
that was a great post thank you very much for sharing
there is only one thing I was looking forward to seeing and that is the part where it is explained to the consumer what fence is good for and why you choose this fence if you have let's say buffalo ranch versus this fence if you have horses ' and this fence will stop coyotes and this fence will stop deer also why wood not metal and which one is better and how many years I would expect from this fence vs if I get this fence and so on and so forth.
Maybe you are planning on posting one or you did in the past, I don't know but thanks one more time for sharing
What is the best way to pin post at bottom? Reverse brace? Double h post brace with strain wire from bottom of outter posts over top of middle? Cement the hell out of bottom post? Pin bottom post with two pieces of rebar through the post at angle into the ground? Pacific north west wet rocky ground.
Great video keep up the good work,
Thanks, will do!
Never thought I'd see someone I went to high school with out here on youtube like this. I see you Gavin Langley. Representing Randolph county.
I bet the list to volunteer your own property for this is very long.
I’m sure there’s a lot of homesteaders that this would be their dream come true !!
Soon we'll have a farm day here! Where everyone can come play!
They need to come compete on my property 😆
Another great video Josh. Thanks. I know you mentioned it wasnt an instructional video but when you have a chance, can you explain the purpose of the barbed wire strands on the top run. Im thinking it is so livestock wont try and put their heads over the fence and bear down? Thanks
you hit the nail on the head
Wooh!
“Pretty Fun Stuff”...
Nobody gets tired of the Stoney ridge farmer! Woooooo👍🏻😁
Just my opinion and I personally have allot of room to grow. The Steel appears to be sleek and possibly be easier if he has welding rig & experience, seems more permanent. However I seem to prefer the wood as it gives that traditional look, as a note I have never built that type of fencing. I will definitely try it on our new acreage, all the crews & their methods are definitely impressive it was hard to pick which team was more favorable. In the end its the Hard workers that will come out on top and the ones that have a love for their craft. Absolutely one of my favorite vlogs series..!!!
would like them to tackle the timber in the background. that is what i will be dealing with fencing.
This is the real american olympic fencing team.
I built a lot of fence years ago. And built a lot more and faster all by hand.
You need to specify which Burnsville , N.C.. there is one east of Charlotte also .
5th better luck next time.
Круто!
Next I like to see is a wall being built, a very high wall.
Not to get political on ya.....but I'm all for someone coming to this country to improve their lives and family. The system is corrupt and nearly impossible to navigate for these hard working people.
Fix the system....build the wall or fence and let those who wanna contribute to society, come on and do it. Oh how soon we forget in this country that we're all immigrants unless we're Native Americans.
Build the wall to keep out the corrupt and the drains on our society! Open the gates to others who want a better life in this land of opportunity......guess who's building our highways, houses and infrastructure in this country.....while an able bodied work force of unskilled labor is sitting at home milking unemployment checks and eating themselves into disability. Oops...there went my politics lol....what do you think Erik?
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer We share the same opinion.
What happened all the fencing when you’re done? Very interesting to watch im from from Northern Indiana Post for the next competition would love to come watch
Like the channel, but wish you would show some detail on how the posts are secured to prevent pullout. You mentioned it as a criteria but left it unaddressed.
Josh i need a machine like that to build my fence here um Portugal. 😉
How would you run electrified wire on those all metal fences if you wanted to? Are there weld on insulators?
14:45
I appreciate that
Awesome vid👍what brands are fencing strainers are contractors using I use Waratah where other use Old Man. Old Man tend not grab wire under high pressure. Box frame with x wires is best form at rise point but we use heavy post that’s deeper, we use steal railroad sleeper. Very interesting with clipping some or every stran of wire, we have sheep n especially XB or crossbred they will test fence. Having every wire stran clip will stop XB pushing through the fence.
Strainright available at Farmfencesolutions.com my friend. Good stuff...sponsors of the competition!
Stoney Ridge Farmer thanks Josh👍I be checking web site for some fencing solutions👍
I got some hills that you practically need a ladder to climb. And then you have the trees.
Can you do one that shows up close how to conform the wire to the slope of the ground at the transition points (top and bottom) especially if possible using 2x4x48 wire
Yes...this year when I go to the fencing competition I'll do some detail on this
Nageezi New Mexico.
Seems the metal fence posts were put in perpendicular to the ground on the slope, not plumb like the wood posts. Any particular reason for this?
if you wire roll ends somewhere other than right at the post do you bind the two rolls together or wrap some up around the post and start the new one there?
bind them
Great video, but what I kept thinking through out the whole video was, "What are they going to do with all of this fence that's just in rows after the competition?"
“How does winning feel?” “American!”
Hey Josh
Ever consider visit homestead farm in Canada
Josh...you need to invest in a travel trailer or 5th wheel. You already have the diesel truck.
Been thinking about it
Looked like a nice fun educational day
Have a wonderful evening🌻🌻🌻
What breed of cattle are you planning on? I like the belted galloways they are`n picky eaters an good mothering instincts an do well in all climates they are also not a big animal that will tear up a wet pastor an very good temperament.
Still researching
Hydraulic post driver beats the PHDS of my younger days!!
Darn right!
@Stoney Ridge Farmer
Not a fence guy but I had a thought. I don't know what you think but you can probably ask the Tornado Wire people.
It occurred to me that a triangular "gusset" could be tied into the fencing wire at the transition posts. It seems to me that would help maintain even tension across all of the horizontal strands. Would that advantage outweigh the disadvantage of not having a continuous run and having additional splices in the fence?
The even tension in undulating terrain problem has already been solved by Tornado Wire. Believe it or not, they have cracked the code to the magic formula for perfectly even line wire tension. Great idea though!
@@farmfencesolutionsllc7804 that would be the little kinks along the fence?
Hello 😊
Does anyone know of video that shows you how to wire a h-brace like they are at 15:00
check out day 3 of the fence build....we'll go over the braces in that video
I am looking forward to the next video. I do have a question about the mesh that was used: each horizontal strand has little "v's" in it every 6 or 8 inches. Wouldn't that "v" relax over time and cause the mesh to relax? Nice video as always Josh!!
That is called a tension curve, and being high tensile steel, it will not relax over time. It helps the wire absorb thermal expansion/contraction, as well as impacts from animals, trees, and vehicles. Great question!
@@farmfencesolutionsllc7804 That's a neat design- thanks for the response!
Boom! Luke got ya an answer! Awesome!
Thanks Luke!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Anytime Ol' Son.
Not sure how fast they drove in a galvanized fence poast but check out what rhino has for post driving, pretty quick and portable.
Rhino is a cheap knock off of the REDI Driver. REDIBoss is the only way to go in a handheld gas powered driver.
@@farmfencesolutionsllc7804 Thanks for the information, I've fixed a few of the Rgino ones and they're not bad but do have issues. They do work good but not sure how they compare to reliability, being around the same price.
I have a very similar hill. But have many steeper ones. Hate them really.
I noticed on the previous competition, when they drove a staple into the post, the whole post vibrated. I suppose this is indicative when you use a post driver vs a hole with tamping. The post just isn't as tight. Now they say, the post will eventually tighten up after a summers worth of rain. Also notice they were using light grade fencing material. Lot different from the stuff we got from Sheffield Steel in the '70s. Imported from China? LoL
what you see is the post vibrating because it's a 10 foot post driven nearly 5 feet into the ground...it's not shaking in the hole...it's tight as a banjo string in the hole....digging and tamping isn't as good because you're just mushing the loose dirt that you dug out...there is not loose dirt here brotha...these post are firmly planted in the ground
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Yeah, I suppose driven poles are ok. I was brought up with the holes mostly by hand in hard clay and tamping them in with a 1x1/2 board. Dad never settled for anything less than railroad cross ties and telephone poles he got from the REA for corner posts. Brought back one that was 3ft diameter one time !!!! Took 2 whole days to set that one !! Used our Ford 8n to stretch the woven, then a set of rope pullys specifically designed for barbed wire. (got a 4 inch scar on my left arm where the wire snapped at the other end and coiled back on me though. Could've been worse) Strung a lot of fence on those 60 acres back in '70, and they still stand today.
Pretty cool videos though, Thanks !
Dug better than driven? Light grade material from China? BaHahahahahahahahah!
LC Ent has a post pounder that you can fit onto your tractor.
I have one here on the farm from ProTech now to use for a year or so
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Exactly! Much more versatile and far cheaper. Good call brother
I noticed the medal post follow the angle of the hill coming down the face of it were the wood post were all straight up instead of following the angle why? An what advantage does driving the post over using an auger an planting the post?
So...some fence builders put post in "Square to the world" and some "plumb or level" depends on what the builder and or land owner wants. I personally prefer level or plumb with a level...not with the lay of the land. While driving down the highway pay attention to fences..you'll see all sorts!
On steep terrain, you lose post height on the angle. In other words, there is less post in the ground if it's level, and not perpendicular to the ground. A driven post is considerably stronger, and much faster than a dug in post.
Thanks Luke! Must be raining out ur way!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Has been for a few days now. Me and Bart are cold and wet!
@15:08 what kind of knot is that? I heard him say it but cant find any video or instructions on it. Does that guy have a youtube channel?? THANK ISN ADVANCE!!
What is the best for longevity and strength wood vs galvanized?
Steel is gonna out last the wood and might out last the wire!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I'm not to sure about that. Wood post soaked in oil and diesel fuel, then a coat of fiber roof coating six inches above ground level... hundred years.... Or burnt wood in the ground... I've taken down alot of galvanized tube fencing that was maybe twenty years old and it was shot... Go to Vermont or upstate NY there are wooden fences that are over a hundred years old.... plus they look better
Is there any driling holes for wooden posts? Because i am amased how deep they go in the ground and not to brake ☺
Some holes had to be pre drilled with an auger before driving the post due to rocks...but it's very unlikely that a post would break during driving
In hard rocky soil I'll break one on 10 wood post mostly the top blows out at a split... But pipe never breaks it just bends...
You can drive pipe in places you would not think about augering...
It's not often that you see this happen.
wow lol
My animals would ride that wire right down those metal posts! I'll take the wood posts.
Unless your animals are elephants....I think they'd have a tough time......this wire is very very tight my friend....not grandpas old barbed wire fence...trust me...I got the tractor hung in my fence the other day...no breaks...no problems
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I had a cow who would step on the wire and force it down so she could eat on the other side. One time of that, the fence will probably hold but over time, it's coming down.
I doubt anything will push that down, 350 lbs of tension, and the spring in the stay wires will hold it up. You could tight rope walk the top wire and it would spring back...
@@coldcynic2213 You need to feed your cows. lol
