      Hello mister dev. You really have something going on with this game. I wonder how you might spice up the game to be different from it's competitors.

      Any chance you could fix knockback so that it isn't a curse if you have bounce? Maybe make the knockback direction equal away from the player location, regardless of the projectile angle?

    • @mathieusemin
      @mathieusemin Před rokem +2

      @@Nevir202 hey, I fixed that issue by having the projectiles bounce then pierce, instead of piercing enemies then bounce, it'll be in the next patch

    • @Nevir202
      @Nevir202 Před rokem +1

      @@mathieusemin I suppose that makes it much less likely to occur, but still, in a game where you only get a few hits, shots could still narrowly miss, hit a further enemy, bounce and strike them in the back, driving them into you.
      Guess you could alternately disable knockback after bounce, to be sure that only projectiles with the player (or their turret) as their origin ever knockback.

    I agree with the use of the term "Bullet Heaven" to describe these over "Reverse Bullet Hell" because the latter term makes me think of a game more like a tower defense, where your goal is still to flood the screen with bullets in order to take down a small, durable, and dangerous target. Like you're the one summoning the waves of critters that create the bullet patterns. Bullet Heaven carries just enough similarity to Bullet Hell that the picture is conveyed with less ambiguity (at least for me):
    -Take the context of bullet hell, where you play a single character trying to survive hectic conditions against a myriad of foes
    -Except the bullet source is you, not the enemies, and your goal is to become untouchable
    I'd agree with getting the community at large to recognize Bullet Heaven as a genre over "Vampire Survivors Clone" because that latter term is disrespectful to the developers of both VS and any other bullet heaven games. We call RPGs with baked-in characters/character growth in service of the plot "jRPGs," not "Final Fantasy Clones." We call RPGs with blank slate characters and highly customizable crunchy number-based growth that can be held distinct from the plot "western RPGs," not "Ultima Clones." The closest we get is the "Roguelike/Roguelite" genres, and even then the term "clone" is never used. I only ever used to see "clone" in the gaming world when a shady developer was actually trying to knock off a legitimate developer's work by doing a shoddy reskin. Can we go back to that?

    Theres a game called bullet heaven that's really good, but it's a bullet hell
    was created like a decade ago, so it's not what you are calling a bullet heaven. Still lots of fun.
    Vampire slayers was billed as 'become the bullet hell' so yes, bullet heaven is perfect.

    I forget who I heard it from but someone had a pretty good take on the whole bullet hell/heaven debate, he had said that bullet heaven's are essentially still bullets hells it's just the enemies in a sense become the bullets being metaphorically shot at you from off screen

    What I'm missing here is a little more damage feedback. I see that the character is flashing but that is not enough. In a bullet hell/heaven game I don't have the time to check my HP. I need some sound, screenshake, red flash, etc. I had to rewind multiple times to see why you lost HP. Otherwise, pretty fun game.

      As Rogue released in 1980 and Hack released in 1982 the actual genre of rogulikes has been around for at least 40 years. The term being applied to the successors of Rogue, Hack and Moria has been a thing since the mid 90s at least.

      It's not you, they are just hard to see in general, even with non colorblind vision they are flashing in colors that are already all over the busy screen making them hard to differentiate from everything else on the screen.

    Honestly i think the term: crimson-like would be the more fitting name to this genre since most of these games like vamp survivors pretty much apes its level up system, removes the ability to shoot while adding a timer to it.

    this genre of game has been around for ages now. They've historically just been called "shmups" aka "shoot 'em ups"

    • @QuantumWaltz
      @QuantumWaltz Před rokem +1

      I would be willing to categorize bullet hell/bullet heaven games under the broad umbrella of shmups. When I step back to think of genre-defining shmups, though, I see limited weapon choice, minimal or no synergy, and limited player power curves. Typically, you start out as your baseline character (commonly a fighter spacecraft) and have one of three special weapons you can tack on over your basic weapon, which may or may not upgrade the longer you use it. Get hit, lose your powerups but survive the hit. Stages are frequently autoscrolling and more heavily resemble bullet hell games (which started out as just more advanced/difficult shmups, hence the 'hell' appellation.)
      I see nothing wrong, however, with developing subgenre terms to put a finer point on discussions. I could talk about RPGs in the broad sense all day, but you and I would be better served if I clarified whether I meant jRPGs, tRPGs, western RPGs, etc.

  • @Earthenfist
    @Earthenfist Před rokem

    Personally, I don't think that the ones that allow you to aim count as part of the new genre. These are just twin-stick shooters like Robotron and others. The auto-attacks that are non-aimed are, I think, one of the distinctions of the newer 'heavens'. (I call them single-stick-shooters.)

    23:26 "You see the pentagram on the floor, like... oh, deal with the devil? Nope, at least not yet"
    Wanderbots, sorry to correct you, but that pentagram (pentacle trapped inside a circle) has nothing to do with the devil. The pentagram to which you are referring is the symbol of evil, the conquest of matter over spirit, which it is usually an inverted pentagram, which has the fifth point downwards. According to Wicca and other Neo-Pagan beliefs, this pentagram represents the five elements, which are fire, water, earth, air and spirit (left, left-down, right-down, right, up).
    This is the main point of confusion and why Wiccans and witches all over the world get confused with Satanists and Luciferanists.

    I've just been calling this type of game a "swarm" or "swarm roguelike."
    I don't like terms like Metroidvania and Roguelike/lite, but I'll use them because they've become ubiquitous. Same with anything ending in -punk. The only time that made sense was for cyberpunk.
    "Bullet Heaven" is decent, but you don't always shoot or shoot tons of projectiles in these games. There are plenty of melee and aura builds too, for example, in the genre.

    I... can only think of the actual game(s) called Bullet Heaven from the Epic Battle Fantasy series that were flash games and got ported to Steam when I hear bullet heaven, so it's a genre name that really doesn't work for me.
