South Africa Vlog: Shopping in Johannesburg

We spent the afternoon at Sandton City, a huge shopping complex that is adjacent to Nelson Mandela Square. In the Square, you can also find the Sandton Public Library, which is very nice.
If you have a long layover or, like us, are stuck at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you can easily go into the city by taking the Gautrain, a commuter train. Most of the stops are in residential areas, but if you want to do a bit of shopping, see a movie, etc., take the Gautrain from OR Tambo to Sandton City. You'll have to buy a Gold Card, which costs a one-time fee of 11 Rand, then add value to the card. A one-way trip from OR Tambo to Sandton City costs 115 Rand per person, which is pricey but still cheaper than taking a taxi.
If you're staying at the Garden Court Hotel, which provides a free shuttle bus service to and from OR Tambo Airport, take the Gautrain back to Rhodesfield Station, which is one stop before the airport. This will cost you just 27 Rand (compared to 115!)! The hotel is about a 10-minute walk from Rhodesfield Station. We strongly suggest that you take this option during daylight hours. If your shopping trip extends into the night, then we recommend that you pay the extra money to take the Gautrain to the airport then ride the free shuttle bus to the hotel, which is the safest option.

Gauteng isn't Xhosa, it's either sePedi, seSotho or seTswana and 'Gauta' means gold so 'Gauteng' is a place where there is gold

Thank you! We stayed at the Garden Court Hotel near OR Tambo international airport. We recall that it was a bit pricey, around 800 or 900 Rand per night. If you plan ahead, you'll likely be able to find a better deal. We had to take whatever we could get because we missed our connecting flights to PE and it was just before Christmas. But all in all, we enjoyed our stay at the Garden Court! Happy traveling!

I am born in South-Africa and I've lived here all my life😄Gauteng is Afrikaans and actually Woolworths is one of the more expensive shops. The cheapest place to shop is Mr Price, they have very new and modern clothing. If your looking for something cute and that fits really well I recommend Pick n Pay clothing, they are more expensive but not the most expensive. It's really great quality and it's easy to find your size in anything. Even if your small chested, Pick n Pay clothing is the way to go😊

The G isn't pronounced like an H. That's a common misconception. It's pronounced like "Ggg" sort of between the sound of clearing your throat and phlegm. :) That's not a very nice image but you can imagine. Like "Gooi" for example means throw and is used by English speakers as well. Foreigners call it "Hooi" But its not, it's a definite "G" sound. Also "Gau" is half of "Gauteng" (The province you're in) and is Sesotho.

If possible, travel with local friends. I haven't been back to S.A. for almost 4 years, but I reckon that if you are spending USD, you'll find S.A. affordable. South Africans are very friendly and enjoy conversation! Have a safe and wonderful time! Best, Tim
