I find it amazing that so many reactors take the time to discuss the meaning of so many Nightwish songs and that is because they have depth. Unlike the usual pop songs we are spoon fed every day.
So true!!
That is SO true that I wish I could give it a dozen likes.
NW epic pieces like the poet and the pendulum remind me structurally of journey to the centre of the earth album - a sectional storyline.
It's like this is music for grown-ups, lol, but kids recognize it's great too. ;)
Yes, the " extra" guitarist is Troy. He is a true multi instrumentalist. He plays what ever is needed. ... I'm sure he could be walking to rehearsal and pic up a rock , a feather and gum rapper from the street and we would hear the music he created on the next Nightwish song.
And when MaArko left, Troy took over and he does a great job. Not the same voice but his voice suits Floor just as good as Marko's did. Nightwish never fails to deliver. Thanks for the genuine reaction ladies.
Empuu smiles and the whole world smiles with him....doncha think
Yeah, I think you got it right... the lyrical meaning I mean. I read it as a metaphor for life in general: The wolves are forever chasing you threatening to devour you. It's about your life and how you choose to live it: as a hero or a coward. "Take the road less travelled, leave the city of fools. Turn every poet loose!"
Just a little info on Emppu if you didn't know. Emppu has a twin brother, He and Jukka Nevalainen (nightwish ex-drummer) grow up going to school together. He has a black belt in judo and has won a bronze-medal from Nordic championship of the youth and two gold-medals from Finnish championship of the youth.[
And here's some more...
Emppu started playing when he stole his brother’s guitarMusic was not a priority, he had a load of hobbies on the go all the time
One of the most important was Judo. He started aged 9.
Emppu was on the Finnish National Judo Team and has two Finnish Judo Championships and a bronze medal from the Nordic championships
He was also in the Finnish hiking championships
He started guitar at ten.
His first album was a Twisted Sister album
He joined his first bands at 12 years old.
First he played in the music teacher’s Oompa band (same teacher as Tuomas and Jukka). His own first projects were with Jukka. They were in the same class at school.
In Kuopio Emppu met Tuomas when Nattvindens played the Domino Club. He filled in for a guitarist who didn’t turn up. He was 16 at the time. The band gave him their album the night before and said “learn the songs” and he went on stage the next night.
When Tuomas decided to form his own project, Emppu was the first he called. He accepted immediately. Because……
One of his mottos is “If you get picky, life gets tricky”
As a result he has played in many bands
Tuomas regards Emppu as not just a guitarist but a social stimulant. You see this on stage. Tuomas says “He’s a funny guy. He can’t stay in one spot for long, he has the shortest attention span ever. If you teach him a riff he forgets it in five minutes however often you go through it.”
“He probably wouldn’t be able to play our songs if we didn’t go through them 200 times.”
“You get the feeling from Emppu that he doesn’t know how to be in a bad mood. But I get the feeling he never forgets anything, even the smallest things bother him for ages.”
As Emppu’s friend, Jukka was quickly recruited to play drums.
Have you seen the new documentary about the Nightwish exhibition museum at Kitee?
With THE music teacher!
Emppu played in a band called Valhalla?
@@stpfs9281 Thete was one 2 or 3 years ago.
Is there a new one? Do you have a link?
Brother Firetribe was another good band Emppu was in. I love watching the live version of Heart Full of Fire with Anette Olzon.
@@stpfs9281 do you have a link?
Nice see you ladies back on the Nightwish train.
Greeting from a 63 years old Nightwish fan, and just recently.
My greatest lifetime musical discovery. They are topleague.
Many of us miss Jukka, but Kai is awesome. I’m just so grateful I was able to see Jukka live once back in 2008. I love this song, one of my Nightwish faves.
The sudden pause is called a drop. And Emppu - what can we say. He comes across as the band's joker and he interacts with the crowd the whole time. But when it comes to playing a solo he is a picture of concentration. He is just going to give it 100%. Nothing less is acceptable. This makes him the perfect Nightwish guitarist.
Anette era, from the Dark Passion Play album in 2007. The title is inspired by the Stephen King book 'Wolves of Calla'. The song itself is telling you to go out and live your life the best you can, live life to the fullest, as the 'Wolves' are only 7 days behind you. Think this is the first time you've seen Troy playing an Irish Bouzouki, it's a relative of the Mandola. 8 strings in 4 pairs. Drummer is Kai Hahto, he's more of a technician, Jukka more of a showman, but both are awesome.
Yes, Emppu is fun to watch. He is almost always smiling and having fun.
100% it is about how do you cope with an intense moment ahead. Do you cower or do you prepare to batlle? Upcoming stress is the moment when heros and cowards part ways.
That is not enough appreciation for Kai: he was Jukka's teacher and is known as the human metronome or the gentle beast❤
@@don-o-seven1437 I do not agree with that... it is like already said... since the wolves are always seven days behind you... you must live your life to the fullest and without no fear... strive to steam-ahead what ever you desire. This is somewhat Tuomas apparently have said about the meaning of the song... but ofc there is no wrong or right interpretation, everyone can make the song their own meaning to them...
This song is about a village being terrorized by a pack of wolves, they are a very real thing in Finland. The meaning of this song is quite literal, unlike most Nightwish songs.
Caesura (pronouced see-ZOO-ra) refers to a break or pause in the middle of a line of verse. It can be marked as || in the middle of the line. The caesura often indicates an abrupt interruption in the performance followed by an equally sudden resumption. Tuomas uses them a lot.
This is My Song, as chosen for me by my wife. I'm inclined to imagine disaster at the door, and she says hey, you've got seven days, do you want to spend them cowering or actually living life? So it has a very personal meaning for me (though lots of people agree with that interpretation). Also, love the fireworks here!
The musical pause is technically called a "caesura", although most English-speaking players call it a "break". Lyrically, the song is based on Stephen King's novel "Wolves of the Calla".
This song has a special place in my heart !!! Not just because wolf is Estonian national animal but the windmill battle between Tuomas and Floor ....
Plus, Floor's inner Wolf Howl !!! holy mother of Odin !!!
Yes, This is Troy! He is playing a Bouzouki in this one, and here is a list of instruments that he can play : Uilleann pipes, tin whistle, vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, pump organ, bouzouki, cittern, bodhrán, mandola, harmonium, aerophone, etc, etc....😉
I have seen this song Live in my home country Estonia, all though it was without Marko (Marko left the band, but now we have a new Bass Player Jukka "Gentle Giant" Koskinen), but Troy really steps up and harmonizes with Floor like never before. Still getting goosebumps, even if I write in here.
And that Emppu solo... He just teases you with that (just look at that grin he is making).
The title is taken from a King's novel called “Wolves of the Calla”. But the conception of the book has nothing to do with the text behind the song, it is far more inspired by the film "Dead Poets' Society". The main idea is - one must live his life the best he can, to strive for his aims, because the wolves are always 7 days behind you and they will catch you if your life is not of full value... and then you will be only dead meat.
That's what Tuomas said in one interview some time ago.
Howl and thank you!!!
NWSU 🤘🐺🤘.
Floor has a dog tattooed behind one ear and a wolf behind the other
It might be less work to give us a list of the instruments that Troy hasn't played...YET. 😉
Not enough Nightwish reactions!
You two have got to do the live NIghtwish performances of
“Shudder Before the Beautiful” live at Wembley
“Elan” live in Buenos Aires 2018
“The Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean” live in Buenos Aires 2018
All amazing songs and incredible performances!
Emmpu plays with a contagious joy! Nightwish is amazing.
That abrupt silent beat is very effective to the listener. French composer Claude Debussy said, “Music is the space between the notes.”
Tuomas: "Deep silence between the notes" (Shudder Before the Beautiful)
❤@@imrehundertwasser7094
The lyrics in every Nightwish song are very important. The music hooks you and the lyrics stir your soul. And it is interesting to read every comment, because there are so many varied interpretations of what a song is about. To me, 7Days is about knowing life is fleeting, the wolves are coming for you so make the best with what time you have left.
Being chased is what I was thinking as well. In fact, it sounds like this song could easily be in an action movie soundtrack.
You girls are almost ready for The Greatest Show On Earth. Keep going down the rabbit hole, and you will get there.
Greetings from Danish Nightwish Army, keeping up with your channel. Great reaction, and appreciation of Nightwish 🏴☠
I CONCUR!!!!!!!! I hope for an reaction to The Greatest Show On Earth from Tampere. The spectacle, what a performance!!!!! If you do, please watch until de video goes on black.
@@orangeguppie6897 Usually I won't say anything about which version a reactor should do.
But since mom made the comment about the earth and fireworks, this is absolutely one where they should do Tampere.
Make sure it is the Tampere version when you get to it. Look forward to it!
this song is based on stephen kings book wolves of calla. itsan amazing song and Floors howl at crowd at the end is fire!!!!!!!
Inspired I’d say. 😊
The term for that sudden pause is a "caesura." You often see it written as "cæsura." In the notation, you'll see it indicated by 2 diagonal slashes musicians refer to as "railroad tracks." A caesura is a break, pause, or interruption in the normal tempo of a composition. There are a bunch of different reasons a composer will throw them in, from giving the brass section time to take a breath, to the way Tuomas uses them in this song to heighten tension...and they are VERY good, properly used, to heighten tension as you see here.
The word that describes Tuomos' lyrics best (usually) is "impressionistic."
This song is actually a little less impressionistic than normal. The song is about Stephen King's Dark Tower series, about the coming of the Wolves of the Calla. (Book 5) It's a little difficult to get if you haven't read that series, but it's no less enjoyable, I don't think.
The great song is a tribute to Stephen King the master of horror and his book "Wolves of Calla" great reaction as ever
Tuomas (keyboards) is the poet and the composer for most Nightwish songs. All backing tracks recorded in London with the London Symphony and London based adult and child choirs. Then backing tracks brought to the studio in Finland and the band adds in drums, keyboards, guitars and Floor's vocals, to get the end result which is recorded for an album. And of course a lot more rehearsing for a live show like this.
This will always be my favorite Nightwish song even though there are plenty of better ones out there. This was my introduction to Nightwish back in 2012 when Spotify randomly played it. Havent stopped listening to Nightwish since. Keep up the great reactions!
Despite all the other amazing songs and amazing performances I think that this is probably my favourite performance and favourite Nightwish song. It has absolutely everything that makes them great
new new new shoemaker you will like it so muts 💗🤘👍
Nightwish are so ingenious that they can even use silence as an element of a piece of music. I recommend one day to listen to the song "Music" from their latest album. This song is about history and all sorts of secrets of music as an art.
Emppu makes me tear up when he starts that solo.
The pause, then "Wembley, Let's Go!"
The chuggity chugg chugg, oooh!
I really like the warmingup videos from Kai Hahto, the newest drummer of Nightwish.
He's probably the best technical drummer.
Pick one I love to see you're reaction
Shout out Miles for asking for my No 3 favourite. There's much to say about thisvperformance and I suspect it's all been said already by people in a closer timezone 🙂
Suffice to say ir is one of Floor's favourites to perform, hence still being played on the current tour.
The feel of this song is amazing.
This song is one of my favourites, build up after build up, the fireworks that fit in the music perfectly and Floor almost becoming a wolf herself, with that wide open mouth at the end of the song🐺💪🤘💣💥💯. We all love Jukka, but Kai is great too. He is like a well oiled machine
You were saying that Nightwish’ songs could be played in a movie or TV show. Just a little fun fact. One of their songs is featured in “The Simpsons” TV show this season (Season 34) “Step Brother From The Same Planet” which is Episode 8. It is awesome. Cheers from Sweden. Great reactions. Well done. Oh I have to add I love your Meatloaf reactions!
I think the song is about a novel, which Tuomas really like
And yes, it's a great song, originally sung by Annette but this version is my favorite hands down
Carpe diem ladies. The poison and the wolves are never far away. Both are metaphors for death which is pursuing us all throughout our lives. 7 Days is just a random amount which represents a short time. You understood the basic song concept. That was Troy (Uilleann Pipes), he plays many instruments.
Live every day to its fullest. Take chances. It is the only way forward in life. Heroes live every day all out. Cowards die regretting what they could have achieved in life.
Tuomas claims it is inspired by a Steven King novel Wolves of the Calla.
Loved it as usual. Two beautiful ladies rocking to Nightwish. Unfortunately Jukka is only in the videos from 2013 back. Me all miss his amazing passion and flamboyant style. Kai Hahto is also a very great drummer, but less flamboyant.
That beat…. The silent beat that you hear in your head when they pause. That’s just what I personally call it. When you see the legs of horses running, you can really hear the gallup in the music. I had noticed the same thing about the guy smiling while he was playing the guitar. I really liked this! Wow!
What a lovely mother and daughter reacting together, you seem so close. Great reaction, I love this song. 🇬🇧
🤗🍒🤘🏻😘very good ladies
My favourite Nightwish song, thanks for reacting to it (Miles on Patreon). I think the song is about living your life the best you can because you never know when the wolves (death) are coming to take you. When a song suddenly stops it's flow it's usually called a 'Drop' 😁😁🤘🤘
Love this one. One of my (many) favorites from Nightwish. Live life courageously, the wolves are never far behind. Life is short. I think a sudden stop in the music is sometimes called a caesura, but I’m no music scholar. That was Troy on the bouzouki, the guitar-like instrument, and he is the pipes player in other songs. Keep exploring Nightwish
Emppu is my favourite from Nightwish too. He is so sympathetic and interactive guy! And nice reaction from you, like always!
Great Nightwish reaction again GGR. - The sound of Troy Donockley's bouzouki created an amazing additional atmosphere to the song. That instrument has its very own sharp metallic sound that differs from the guitar. And Troy also sang occasionally in addition to Floor and Marko.
One of my favourites.
Nice reaction again ladies. Keep the NW reactions coming please ❤
I am posting this before I am even watching.....This is my favorite NW song!!!!!!!
This song included Troy, playing the bouzouki and adding to a 3 part harmony.
Not the 1st I've heard you admire Emppu...I love this! I'd like for you to see what a charming gentleman... check out any recent performances of Ghost Love Score...directly after Floor hits her big final note...she and Emppu have the cutest little stage ritual they do. Shows you how much they genuinely love and respect...and enjoy each other!
HOOOWL !!! WEMBLEY LETS GOOO !!
This is a solid powerhouse - Build up followed by Build up by Build up…..awesome.
Only Nightwish will dare to play a Bouzouki in a metal song and make it sound great :-)
And in the second half our Queen nearly turns into a Werewolf :-)
This is just great. And another great reaction by you !
All hail the Valkyrie Goddess !
I love the Moment, when Floors Wolf howls in the growd.
Hello ladies, greetings from UK
Long time no see 😊
Another great reaction, thank you
I saw the shocked look on Mom's face when reading the lyrics in this song, and also in your last reaction to 'Ghost River'. Please bear in mind that Tuomas' lyrics are poetic and should not always be taken literally. They can often be metaphors
My take on the meaning of this song - time is always galloping ahead and we only have so much time allotted to us. If you only had a week left to live what would you do with your life?
Be brave and live your life as if you only had seven more days to go, live life to the full 🙂
Masterpiece
Lovely reaction. Yes, Troy is playing the Irish Bouzouki and he is the one you say playing the Uilleann pipes. He plays lots of different instruments. Once he was asked what he didn't play and he said hockey! Kai and Jukka are both fantastic drummers but Jukka is more dramatic in his playing so I can see how he might be more fun and interesting to watch. Best sing to see Emppu really play would be Nightwish's tribute to Pink Floyd, High Hopes from the End of an Era concert. For more of Marko and Floor's harmonies I really like The Islander live from Tampere and While Your Lips are Still Red live from Wembley. Marko has the lead in both songs and Floor's harmonies are just gorgeous.
One of my all time favorite Nightwish performances. Love Troy playing the Bouzouki and Emppu's main riff. Love the intensity and Floor's inner alpha wolf coming out (she has a tattoo of a hound behind one ear, and a wolf tattooed behind her other ear, that represent her duel personality of domestic calm and wild beast!). Her off-mike howl to the audience near the end is both exhilarating and terrifying! On the flip side, I highly recommend you react to My Walden from this same Wembley concert - it's such a joyful and feel good song that features Troy's pipe playing! (Also highly recommend from this same concert: Yours Is An Empty Hope - where you hear Floor growl!! and a beautiful ballad While Your Lips Are Still Red, where Marco sings lead vocal and Floor provides backing vocals - and Troy plays amazing guitar solos with an e-bow)
Wolves of the Calla.
Kai is a fantastic drummer but i also miss Jukka. And yes it was Troy on the "guitar" that also plays flute and Uilleann pipes
Can’t wait for the official release of this song (or complete blueray) of the November 2022 Amsterdam concert(s). It was for me the highlight, without Marko but with Troy singing !! His practice pays off and only will get better with growing confidence. Second night version was just fantastic !! There’re some phone recordings available on YT
So awesome, everytime.
It's inspired by Stephen King's book "Wolves Of The Calla"
🇬🇧 Norfolk with you lovely ladies ❤ Wembley let’s go !!!😊
I always interpreted this song as Carpe Diem, have I used my life in full potential, were I a coward or hero, closed up or lived, before my time comes.
I really miss Jukka as well. I miss the intensity he shows in his live performances. He is very much a showman and he appears to hit those drums HARD, which I love. However, I also appreciate the fantastic skill of Kai. There are videos that highlight his ability. One of my favorites is a video from 12 years ago, around the time that he took over while Jukka took a temporary leave of absence from drumming duties (which turned out to be permanent): czcams.com/video/3CZYhO7vZlo/video.html.
BTW, if you look off to the left at the beginning of the video, you will see what appears to be Emppu's signature purple guitar and also a white one that is perhaps the one he plays in the End of an Era concert.
Emmpu is a very tasteful guitarist...I like his style, its great🤘
Thanks for reactions😍😍😍
So nice to see your reactions, you are so in to it and actually trying hard to do the analysis! Good job to both of you!
Generally speaking with Nightwish, stuff that happens usually have a meaning nothing is done just because its cool or anything like that, sometime you should focus on the backdrop, there is always something going on there... ;)
We get it, Jukka's cuter lol
Kai is an absolute machine on the drums and a world-class talent, and he certainly brought some new tools for Tuomas to weave into the Nightwish sound.
Hi again ladies. Love your reactions. This is such a powerful performance. Absolutely love it. Thank you so much.
At 7:17 Floor commands... "Wembley let's go" and GO it did. Epicness right there on that stage with the trade mark Nightwish transitions and more layers than an onion. Phenomenal band. Thank you Miles, thank you ladies. Paul 🙏🙂👍❤️
Epiiiic!
Thanks for your enjoyable reactions!. I have never seen Nightwish live, and unfortunately it doesn't seem like they will get to Australia any time soon. But knowing that I will never see Floor singing with Marco is a real disappointment.
Another awesome NW review ladies! Kudos!
Nice reaction Ladies, thanks 🥰.
Amazing song thanks for your reaction
Besides the music my favorite parts is Emppu's smile and Floor's silent scream...lol
It’s hard to say which is your favourite NW songs, as you have so many brilliant tracks. However, if push comes to shoves, I would say, this track along with Weak Fantasy, Song of Myself and of course The Greatest Show on Earth would be them. I would be hard pressed to refine it down any further. In fact just pick any of their songs and you will not be disappointed. Love em ladies. ❤️🤘🎸🎻🇦🇺 should have watched the whole video before commenting. Drummer’s name Kai Hahto, took over on recommendation from Jukka as his replacement as he had to step aside because of health reasons (severe insomnia). Other musician is Troy Donockley and became a permanent member when Floor was announced as a permanent member, in 2013. Troy is quite a brilliant musician playing Uilleann pipes, various whistles, Irish Bouzouki, electric guitar (sometime with an E-bow) and acoustic guitar. In fact give him an instrument and he could probably play it. Add to that he sings as well. Hope that helps, ladies.
Fun fact. Emppu Vuorinen(Guitarist) was Judo Finnish championships as boy. So not all guitar playing. 😅🤣🤣
My thought is that the wolves are always seven days away. Just around the last bend, just over the last rise...they are coming. The wolves are always nipping at your heels, always howling at your door. So....the only question is what are you going to do about it? Are you going to get up, fight, progress, move? Or are you going to sit there and let them take you? Are you a hero or a coward? That's my interpretation.
Tuomas said in one interview that he will not explain exactly the lyrics because it will spoil the discovery of each listener searching the meaning. I hope I wrote English that you understand my meaning 😊But I miss Jukka ❤ even though Kai is very good professional drummer. I watched the latest Nightwish song release 'The Phantom of the Opera ft. Henk Poort' and I noticed Kai has found his own style and I love it. But still I watch older live songs where Jukka there, I love his style.
Very well done!!! 😊
Welcome back ladies. Oh the hand thing lol well just like the movies i once went on a date wearing a suite feeling all fancy with my date and i did the glass of wine thing i knocked it over onto the people in the near by table. Such a cleche. Yes it's the same bagpipe guy playing the guitar his name is Troy. Kai the Drummer ex Wintersun drummer is Jukkas friend but because of Jukkas condition was asked to replace him Jukkas suggestion. Kai many would argue is a better drummer then Jukka but Jukka is more fun to watch as he's more animated. Jukka works in the background for Nightwish. Watch learn the setlist in 48 hours you see a bit of Jukka behind the scenes. Thank you
Fun fakt Emppu and Floor toch each other whit ther richt hand pointing finger when he runs over the stage !😄
I am truly waiting for you to react to The greatest show on Earth. That will be a treat.
You have seen the new drummer Kai Hahto, replacing Jukka, he has insomnia for a long time and in 2015, it became a big problem and he did have to stop as a drummer, he is stil with Nightwish in the managment. So since 2015 Kai is the drummer of Nightwish (he was and is a good friend of Jukka, who did ask him to replace him). The third guitar player you see is Troy Donnockly who also plays the Uilleann pipes (you say: ielen pipes), Irish bag pipes, and all the wood instruments.
Love the reaction. I think some country artist, someone who has a sort of hipper, rockier image, is missing out if they don't do a cover of this. I think the lyrics and the feel of that chorus would work well for someone like Shooter Jennings or Whiskey Myers...
Hi. Nice reaction. That was Troy playing the other guitar. The English member of the band, who also played pipes on the other song.
The pause in the song is called break down.
I know one drummer who steals the show:
The Warning - DISCIPLE Live at Teatro Metropolitan CDMX 08/29/2022
I made a gif of that face she makes at 10:19
I use to to express extreme frustration😃
The song is an interpretation of Stephen King's Dark Tower series book 5, "The Wolves of Calla"
Clearly, the song is about the rise of mercantile guilds in 17th century Europe.
Great reaction 👍👍
make the most of every day you live as you never know when the wolves will come to move you on from this mortal coil! Don't be a coward, be a hero and LIVE your life to the full 🤣
I think the wolves could be different things: a military enemy, a hostile raiding party, some kind of enforcement tool of an authority, an evicting sheriff, a plague, or, you know, actual wolves...The poison is there so they can take their own lives, if need be, rather than submit or allow the wolves to determine when and how they die...I think the "flaming arrow" effect evokes the Viking funeral...
We simply call those pauses stops. Everyone has to hit it sharply or it fails. LOL
Since Kai was Jukkas "mentor" as a drummer they do ofc sound similar 😁. Kai was the drummer in Wintersun. The new bassist after Marco also came from Wintersun later on.
Love your little banter about waving hands. Makes me laugh.
And you (the daughter), your demeanour is sooo attractive. Mom, I want to be your long lost stepson! 💕 😀.
Much Love to both of you!
And to Ukraine!
💙💛💙🌻🌻🌻
Jukka is a tremendous drummer but because of a medical condition, he suffers from chronic insomnia, he had to leave the band but his replacement Kai is not bad!
Nice reaction to another amazing song from Nightwish
Thanks for this one, i loved your reaction, see you, bye!!!!
Hallo about Jukka he is still in the band in management.
nice done, thank you ❤🔥
If I were you, when you’re picking the next song to react to, see if it is performed at Wacken ‘13 or earlier, then you can be sure Jukka will be in it. Even if you’re going through “the list”, see if that particular song is on the set list at Wacken. The list is not the Bible, so it doesn’t have to be followed word for word. Like you, I enjoy watching Jukka perform as much as anyone else on stage. There’s only so many videos out there with him that get reacted to, so take advantage of them.
You are born ? The rest of your life is running away from death. Live life to the full, death gets you in the end
