I do wish the younger crowd would get more involved.... You rarely see anyone under the age of 30 at these events. I think they do need to advertise to the young people... I found out about sass after I purchased a lever gun, a guy at the range asked if I did sass.... and that's what got me into it.

if sass does not attract newer younger members it will die out... with only about 25,000 active sass members that is not going to keep it afloat

It's important to understand the demographic. Boomers grew up on an explosion of Old West fiction in the post-war era. At one point in 1957 there were 9 different cowboy themed shows on TV. Subsequent generations have just dressed their stories differently. Science Fiction, Fantasy, Period dramas. And with multimedia, it isn't the networks or nothing. People have much more varied tastes. The Western never really came back. I loved Tombstone, the modern redo of True Grit (really tight to the book compared with the John Wayne one) and other quality Old West stories, but I don't see it having a hold on kids like it did ever again, it was an unusually ubiquitous genre at that time.
For me, as a millenial at 30, I can't see anyone much younger dropping the $2000-$3500 to get into this sport. The good Italian replicas aren't cheap and Winchester, Colt, and Remington are charging prices that show they are not worried about moving units, they know a few older folks with money will spring for it. Shameless gouging. Also, as a history nut, I can't help but feel the SASS community is a bit hokey, perhaps a focus on more historically accurate, grounded, portrayal of the old west would draw in people?

In regards to the younger crowd being at the events I believe a lot of it has to do with the start up price. I was very lucky and found a group that allowed me to borrow there Guns at the matches until I got my own.

well actually often the Indians had more and better guns than even the US army, and also many a white man has died in from the elements in places the natives thrived, soooooo maybe it's the others that should be worried.
