    I’ve been watching you forever and just realized you say “ birthing people” not women or moms… Is there a reason for it or just your way of speaking?

    • @Nurse_zabe
      @Nurse_zabe  Před 3 lety +193

      Hi! So I’ve been using inclusive language for the past few years, and “hello you beautiful birthing people” for a while too. That was just a catch phrase, if you will. But the inclusive language (I often use you and us when talking about birth) does a couple of things in my mind. 1) when I’m talking to the internet at large I want to make sure that none of my language is exclusive. There are trans men and non-binary people who give birth. There are women who are surrogates or plan on giving their baby up for adoption who might not want the term “mother” used. 2) using inclusive language does not exclude you or her as a mother. In person, I use the term you are comfortable with. So mom, mama, mother or the patient’s name (which is definitely my preference)!
      I understand there had been a lot of push back recently on inclusive language with birth. I’ve gotten some nasty comments on my last few videos. Thank you for asking kindly. It’s ok if you don’t agree with my reasoning, but my language choice is nothing new. It’s also ok if you don’t agree with me, but like everything else I believe we can have different opinions and still be kind and respectful. 💗

      @@Nurse_zabe I love the inclusive language. All patients and people going through the birthing experience deserve respect. And anyone being nasty about language needs to get their priorities straight.

      @@Nurse_zabe oh ok I was just curious! I definitely agree with calling patients what they feel comfortable with and would never leave a nasty comment but I also see why some people would be upset to go through 40 hours of labor like the superhero they are and then be called a “ birthing person” like what they did in the hospital to my friend 😖😖😖😖 it sometimes feel like saying a “ woman” is a crime now days when it should be celebrated because I’m 30 weeks pregnant and let me tell you my husband would freak out from some of the weird body things I’ve been experiencing and he can’t even look at a birth video still 😆. She asked them if her husband will be in the charts as a “ sperm donor” 😂

    Diaper ice packs are one of my favorite tricks when I’m working postpartum. I don’t even bother to cut the diaper, just open the back end (with the sticky tabs) like a bag of chips, fill with crushed ice, and fold over the end and use the sticky tabs to hold it closed. Gets colder and lasts way longer than the shake and break peri ice packs the hospital stocks for us!

    I've never heard of a nasal aspirator only being a one time use item. The hospital taught me how to clean mine, and use it hundreds of times. My ENT doctor gave me one to do sinus Rinses. He also taught me how to clean it between each use. You would go through a ton of these if you threw them away after each use. Maybe things have changed over the years, or maybe it's what they do only while in the hospital, because it would be difficult to keep up with cleaning all of them with all the babies in the nursery.

    Ireland- I was provided the puppy pads, those wonderful huge maternity mattress like pads, syringes to collect colostrum, jugs of water with tiny cups (glad i brought my own water bottle!)
    I regret not taking the extra drugs (difine) to take home that were offered.
    And my baby was wrapped in white towels, so i was not taking those home...cute you had ones with ducks 🐥
    The pads were only thing I kept asking for more, because I was soaking through them like crazy and ones I'd bought were smaller...fun times. On week 5pp and still going but on "normal" pads now. End already 😑

    Ive had 3 babies and the hospitals never provided any of these. Anytime I had pain after birth they just gave me tylenol. They gave you oversized pads and a mesh diaper. I did have some of those tucks pads and spray (the spray hurt me worse) I believe after I kept having to argue and demand things. I didnt have stitches but was streched out a little far didnt tear much but when you potty it hurts! In a hospital you shouldnt have to ask for stuff.
    An the hospital I was in only gave 1 receiving blanket. They said they have a company that washes them so they can be reused!!
    They would give me a washable pad for the bed and I packed it in my bag and asked for another. Then packed it as well. Works great for potty training kids in bed at night

    • @Nurse_zabe
      @Nurse_zabe  Před 3 lety +2

      I found I needed a second witch hazel pad container. But I ran out of the first in the hospital, so they provided the second. Otherwise the ones I received were enough for me. In case she doesn't answer, I'll give you my experiences. I have had five children with an epidural and four without. When you have the epidural, you probably won't have any control of your legs, so you won't be able to get into different positions. It would be dangerous. However, my midwife will sit the head of the bed up and break down the bottom so that you can sit upright and still deliver without being flat on your back. I know you hear horror stories, but sometimes it feels good to be on your back and have your legs in stirrups. If this is your first, I know that seems hard to imagine because I know I DID NOT want to be like that beforehand, but in labor sometimes your desires change. It's good to have an idea of what you think you'd like but at the same time be forever flexible because every birth and labor is different. I know I didn't understand why some women gave birth naked; then I was in the tub with my second when I completely dilated and could barely get out of the tub before collapsing on the bed and having to push. In that moment, I just wanted it over; I didn't care about how I looked. 🤣 Birth is a wonderful, empowering thing. It's hard, but it also feels amazing to have accomplished it. Just relax and go with the flow! 💗 You'll do great!

    At the risk of sounding jealous none of the things you mentioned are provided in the hospitals where I come from. My birthing experience is of bitter sweet feelings. The hospital doesn't even provide toilet paper. The things I did receive at the end of stay was a commercial care package of 3 to 4 smal samples for baby care cosmetics. I almost got discharged with the IV plastic thing sticking out of my vein.They forgot about it.
