    Italy is so underrated when it comes to high speed rail. Everybody is on about the Shinkansen and the ICE and the TGV, but let's not forget that the Italians pioneered high speed EMUs.
    The last time I travelled on Italy's rail network was during my honeymoon, in December 2001. There wasn't the AGV back then, let alone Italo. We travelled mostly on the ETR500, from Rome to Florence, from Florence to Venice, and from Milan to Rome, although the most memorable trip was in a classic carriage with separate compartments, from Venice to Milan, where my wife (then of a few days, now of 19 years) and I had the compartment to ourselves for most of the trip, and we just read, or looked out the window.

    • @DylansTravelReports
      @DylansTravelReports  Před 3 lety +12

      I agree. Italy has a very good network and even the older ETR500s are still a very good option imo.

    • @maxart3392
      @maxart3392 Před 3 lety +5

      Agreed. And ETR200 is still one of the sexiest trains in terms of design and also well ahead of the time: in the 1930s it already had bogies between the cars, just like TGV/AGV.

      @@maxart3392 I had to look that one up...but holy smoke ! In 1938, before the war, the ETR200 ( and the German SVT137 in '36) must have appeared to come from outer space !! Wow . And the etr200 remained in use until at the latest 1993 !? Incredible ...

    The steam locomotive at the entrance of Milano Centrale station belongs to Fondazione FS, a cultural association that does maintenance on old trains and sometimes opens them to the public. In particular, just behind that steam locomotive you find the Squadra Rialzo, a deposit owned by Fondazione FS where are stocked many old trains from '800 and '900. In 2019 that deposit was opened to the public for some days and it was made possible for everybody to visit the old carriages and to learn about the association's history. Moreover, Fondazione FS operates many vintage trains (steam and electric) all around Italy, once as a child I travelled between Brescia and Pisogne, on Lake Iseo with a steam train and threw some coal into the steam engine :)

The trian is okay for a short journey. I like the 1st class seating accommodations. The 2nd class seats were okay. I wasn't crazy about the food service. It's always best to bring your own food. I commute pretty often between Milan and Venice and most of the times I take Italo in Prima, as it costs just a couple euros more than smart class and is much cheaper than Trenitalia's standard class on a Frecciarossa.
    Still, when the prices are similar I tend to choose the Frecciarossas because of their frequency (1 or 2 trains per hour compared to Italo's maximum 7 services a day).

    Went from Florence to Venice with Italo seven or eight years ago. Apart from our two seats the entire Prima carriage was taken up by an American family tour party including the tour leaders. We had a chat with them and found out it was a Disney company and most families had tagged this tour on to the end of a Mediterranean cruise. We looked it up on the internet to find the cost of the tour alone was phenomenal! I hate to think how much each family was paying for it and a cruise beforehand. We were worried that it might get a bit rowdy but all the adults were exhausted and all the kids were happy playing on their tablets and phones. The speed was impressive at first but beyond Bologna the line to Venice has yet to be upgraded so I don’t think we got above 160kph. Nice way of arriving at Venice though.

    For a family guy like me the 2nd class looks good since they have Center tables in some areas but they don't provide family cabin like in German's ICE (my standard) as an option.
    I also liked the vending machine. For tourists that don't want to interact with the language, they are an easy escape. Again, as a family guy, I don't mind any options since I bring my mini supermarket with me all the time 🤣🤣🤣

    Wow, now Roma Termini looks so great, do you have an idea when was it remodeled? I have been there in 1992 and 1995, and both years the surrounding streets and the station looked even scary, there were rude beggars inside, and the whole building didn't look so clean. Now I'm very much impressed positively and amazed of how state of the art the Station looks, you can breath progress, modernity and even a good amount of high class, I bet, now this station is one of the best in Europe. Only the platforms look like in the 90's, buy even at that time they were kind of OK. The Italo train looks really well, the seats have a very cool design. Very nice ship, looks very modern too, top of the line. Yes, the illumination and the general Color Palette looks so great. Beautiful "Starship", totally worth the price to travel on it..! Milano centrale tracks and Dome always impressive too, awesome ride thanks..!!

      I guess it underwent many refurbishments after the second half of the 00s, with the launch of country-wide HS trains. It was a breath of fresh air for Italian railways in general, with rising ridership and more investments. In the 90s railways were slowly getting forgotten due to car rise and air travel popularity, but now Trenitalia is investing more. They even bought new Regionali trains (slower ones, for commuters), which is something rare per se, but what's more is that those actually have plugs and extra room for bikes. Trenitalia finally jumping into the present

    I took Italotren from Venice to Milan in Prima class in October 2021. They checked vaccination records before letting you board the train. In contrast for Trenitalia high speed train during that same period only checked vaccination record on board the train after it had departed the platform. On board Italotren I was offered an espresso in addition to the usual soft drinks and water and a choice of biscuit or cracker. The train was punctual and I'd take Italotren again.

    Dear Dylan
    Thanks for your excellent video.
    I have exactly the same opinion of you. I've travelled several times on Italo trains in both classes Smart and Prima: a great experience each time! The seats in Prima are really comfy, the coaches and WC clean and the services were on time.
    The web platform for booking the tickets is better than the platform of state operator Trenitalia.
    The only negative aspect of Italo are the announcements : if you travel between Venice and Milan you have many stops and you are still disturbed of the same messages about prohibition of smoking cigarettes, louf phone calls...
    Italian railways needs to be concurrenced by another company of trains: it is done with NTV (Italo)! And I must recognise that Trenitalia with its service Frecciarossa/Freccia 1000 has really improved! Italy needs a concurrence to be excellent!

I must say that although Italo tends to be a little bit cleaner than trenitalia’s trains and his personnel is gemerally more polite, I’ve always found Frecciarossa and Frecciargento seats more comfortable than Italo. Not a big difference though, let’s just say that I would prefer the trenitalia offer if the price was the same, but if you find and offer on one of the two for a certain route then go for it: you won’t get it wrong anyway

Incidentally, I saw your mate NonstopEuroTrip did Milan to Pompeii on circumvesuviana . You would love the whole journey to Sorrento to report, (and stay a while for a holiday!). Next time,Club Executive only so you can review the lounge in Rome! How do those vending machines work? Cash or credit card? Being that you're a UK resident,would your credit card be compatible with Italo's vending system? Because Europe is awash with numerous passenger rail lines,if you wanted to ,you could go from Rome back to the UK perhaps within a day but no telling how many train changes you would have to make. Two ideas for future videos 1)Review what hotels you overnight in and 2) Rome and Milan surely have suburban trains--hop on board for say,a Rome to an outlying suburb and back,let us know your experience

Other than the malfunctioning hand dryer, everything looked top notch 👌. Great job again, Dylan. Have you considered doing travel shows for American Public Television? I think you would be super at it.

    I've been on trains in Italy. I was interested if you still have to validate your ticket before boarding the train. The first time the man sitting next to me spoke to the conductor and the man told me I wouldn't have to pay a penalty. Does this still apply?

    • @josephjuanaliagavalenzuela2345
      @josephjuanaliagavalenzuela2345 Před 3 lety +1

      For regional and intercity trains you still have to validate them before the ride or if you couldn't for some reason (maybe you were in a hurry etc) you have to talk ASAP with the boarding chief/conductor and they will just validate it.
      The only time you don't have to validate it's when it clearly says "doesn't need validation" in the ticket or the ticket has the traveling data already printed, like the name of the passenger, data, hour and destination. If you purchase your ticket online (or any e-ticket with asks for your name) you don't have to validate it. :3

    This week's question: how do you decide what class of travel to take? Is it a question of funds, or do you have other parameters at play?

    • @DJTrainBrain
      @DJTrainBrain Před 3 lety +2

      For my leisure journeys, I often travel first class just to avoid rowdy crowds. :-) I'm overly sensitive to stimuli, so I don't do well in crowded, noisy areas. A group of people chatting loudly or otherwise being rather lively in their behaviour can easily ruin what would otherwise have been a very enjoyable trip for me. First class can then be a major relief, especially if it also gives me access to waiting rooms at stations. First class's patronage just behaves themselves that much more calmly and quietly.
      But I have also very much come to like the added... well... class that comes with it, like a proper complimentary at-seat meal service, or even just the posh leather seats and the privilege of the waiting lounge. :-)
      It does, of course, depend on the funds, at least somewhat - I don't travel in first if I simply can't afford it. But if I can, and the price gives its value in return, then I definitely go first.
