Thumbs up, you did a great job under the circumstances, when you book a window seat you expect to get one.....lol. Stay Safe.
Thanks 👍
It is amazing how fast a high speed train really is, when you have covered half the distance in 6 hours, and the last half in only 2... 😃
Misalignment is one of my gripes too. You were better served on Monday's trip to Tirano in a Second Class local carriage (where ALL the seats had a proper window view) than in this First Class carriage.
Nice video! Just two side notes: the one you see at 6:45 is “Milano Fiorenza” Trenord depot, and it’s located just outside the city of Milan, very close to the Expo 2015 site. The actual “Fascio di San Rocco” (San Rocco's sidings) is located less than 2 kilometres from Milano Porta Garibaldi station, but on the opposite side of the train from your seat. Then, the reason why it takes much longer to travel from Milan to Lyon (18:00 marker) than from Lyon to Paris is not just that from Turin to Lyon there's no high speed line (yet, but there are several protests against it), also between Milan and Turin there’s an high speed line (capable of reaching 300 km/h), that could save up to 1 and a half hour, but TGVs are not allowed to use that line. It was planned on June to start a Frecciarossa service between Milan (Central station, not Garibaldi) and Paris (Gare de Lyon) and it would have taken 6 and a half hours running on both Italian and French high speed lines, but it didn’t start due to the pandemic. I hope I gave you some useful and/or interesting information 😊
Thanks for the info! I hear they are building a high speed line that basically goes through the alps rather then round the mountains. They did something similar in South Korea that was a great success and made journey times less than half what they used to be.
@@DylansTravelReports exactly, the TAV line would save hours of travel between Turin and Lyon, but there have been (and will probably continue after the pandemic) several protests by the NO-TAVs (TAV means Treno ad Alta Velocità, or High Speed Train)
hi marco yes the line lyon -torino has had loads of problems with the protesters for years now ,maybe it will be running one day !! lol tell me do you know where the tunnels you see at 10m50 go to ?the one on the left looked disused .anyone know ?
@@dazlebluefrogify the one on the right is used by the track running towards Torino, the one on the left should be the former railway tunnel
@@marcodamasio thanks for your reply
You keep on travelling in spite of the pandemic. It seems that you have made a proffession of your trips. Congratulations dylan.!! Chapeau!!
Overpriced food is the SNCF signature. When I used to travel on TGV, I always bought my own food elsewhere, much cheaper!
The most scenic journey aboard a TGV (but not only) is the Marseille-Nice line with the mountains in one side and the mediteranean sea on the othe side...
Never have I seen a channel that captures my attention so much, literally, you have a talent in making videos, keep it up dude! You never talk and you always put fantastic descriptions of every train, that's what makes you unique! It's like if I were travelling with the same train. Great job!
Thank you so much 😁
Thanks, Dylan! Your videos are remarkable. You are remarkable. I have nothing else to say, except that you make the same gestures as me when taking a TGV. I have the same reflexes as you for looking at the landscapes, the seats, etc. etc. Very good analysis. You did very well to take 1st class, for such a long trip, it's worth it. Thank you very much to you! Thank you.
Thanks a lot for your kind words 😁
@@DylansTravelReports your remarkable
Eurostar should do a high speed sleeper from london to milan leaving evening with on board dinner and wake up in the alps with tea and breakfast in the morning
Better suggestion: an Eurostar sleeper connection between London and Austria ( Salzburg or Vienna). You sleep and wake up in the georgeous scenery of the Alps between Germany and Austria. Greetings from Germany.
How about, London to Gibraltar to connect with ships to Africa
@@sokrates3900 how about nightjet
All of these were killed at the outset when Eurostar built the sleeper trains and then decided not to even attempt to run and market them and sold them to Canada. They said the journeys to Paris/Brussels were too short. But it would still have worked better for a morning meeting than a crack-of-dawn plane. And coaches could have carried on to Amsterdam, Koln, Frankfurt, Munich etc.
@@sokrates3900 Milan is more important mate and sorry but Brenner pass and the Alp between France Switzerland and Italy are way better
Thank you Dylan ! Amazing journey as usual ! 😉 TGVs are the best and my favourite trains ... 🥰🥰🥰
Glad you enjoyed 😁
Lovely views as always...i always remember my train journeys during my trip to Europe...hope i can relive them again soon. Till then your videos do a great job...keep em coming
Thanks a lot 😊
I liked how you went in through a small side entrance with the long walkway because it didn't look like a typical station entrance not for a long way. In fact it was lovely and quiet for a major city station which I thought was quite cool.
What I really like about your video's is that you put the text blocks for a long period on the screen. Other CZcamsrs are making it to fast so I have to pause everytime. Not needed with your video's =)
Yes, that’s a pet peeve of mine too. 👏
I'm pleased to find I leave the text up long enough as it's something I've worked to improve.
Working in television the golden rule is can you read it 3 times, but twice is fine 👍
Lovely scenery of Alps. Thanks for sharing ☺️

Amazed Lindsey from Funhaus watches the same videos I do
Thanks Dylan, certainly incredible scenery and that would help pass the time for such a long trip. Stay safe.😷 and thanks again for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed 😁
Dylan you need to collaborate with Funhaus, I mean it. Do it for Lindsey she is a treasure

4:02 I'm not sure if Mark Smith would be proud of you (seat 61), or disappointed, rather (window alignment). :-)
He'd be proud of the seat choice, but disappointed in the seat quality!
I’ve just subscribed to your channel after watching a couple of your blogs/vids, most enjoyable and informative. thank you for sharing.
Mark in England.
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying the videos 😁
Thanks Dylan. Expensive food , as you said. But the amazing scenery makes up for it
Hi Dylan, another great post from you despite the negative issues you experienced with the seat against the pillar, the poorly presented loo and the expensive catering. The scenery from Milan to Lyon is just stunning and thank you for the effort you took to get it right for us viewers. It could be typical arrogance on the part of SNCF or the Italian origins of the service, but if it was me I would be searching for the train manager in an effort to get a better seat, especially given the distance I would have travelled to experience this journey. I was fortunate to have good seats on most of my British trips and needed only one reservation (from Edinburgh to York on a Cross-Country Class 220 service - and I scored a good 1st class seat and great weather). Hoping the latest UK lockdown hasn't restricted you too much and you are able to earn a living and stay with your folks. Melbourne's population gets set free to explore beyond the regional "ring of steel" from midnight tonight and I'm looking forward to both road and rail trips this week and eating out again. Best wishes and please stay safe. From your friend downunder, Michael.
Dunno, it is a service operated by SNCF with an SNCF train, what does the Italian origins of the service have to do with the seat against the pillar?
Thank you Dylan from India. Its amazing the way you place contents in video. Especially im on world tour seeing your video. Stay safe bro. Keep up the amazing art. I'm always speechless & astounded seeing your content.
Thanks! I have already reviewed trains from the USA 😁
@@DylansTravelReports yes I saw lately , my bad stay safe.
Magnifique !
Finally we got another good trip report on this route
Another beautiful video! Just the thing to help wind down after a tiring day - thanks for all you do 🚄😺
Glad you enjoyed 😁
@@DylansTravelReports :) Just Patreoned you, sorry it's only base level money is tight! Keep up the great work👍🏻
Thank you for the video.
Your seat should have been advertised as a “not on the aisle” seat. Calling it a “window seat” was too flattering! Other than the blocked view, the dry bathroom faucet and the mediocre food, this train trip seemed very smooth. The view, what you could see of it, was lovely. A nice trip overall!
hey came here from funhaus now I’m subscribing! This is some interesting and helpful stuff!
Awesome! Thank you!
Very nice Dylan, my wife and I did this trip back in 1994 but the route then was Paris Lyon Lausanne then Simplon Tunnel through to Milano. We was in 2nd class which was 2+1 seating, I seem to remember the food was better back then.
I am one of the few who likes graffiti art so I loved those murals in the Milan station.
I think the most scenic train trip I've ever done was between Munich and Linz on an OeBB Railjet! I didn't know first class was so much relatively cheaper in Europe - here, of course, it's usually about twice as expensive as standard, unless you get Weekend First or one of those....
Nice, in my case when I filmed it I used my laptop and the video quality sucked (that was 10 years ago) it's nice to watch it in HD
i luv the sound of the train when it goes over the points.
Hi Dylan I enjoyed the video!!! I love the scenery!! I like the map, seeing the direction, !!!
Thanks!
Quite agree with you about seats being out of alignment with windows. In UK, it was always correct for 1st Class but hit & miss for the rest of us.
I also cannot cope with travelling backwards!
Wow train is such a good way to travel almost all have something to see (not metros) You've got a fast growing channel keep it up mate!
Thanks!
great footage/thanks
Glad you enjoyed 😁
A very nice video ! I too am a huge fan of the TGV, whether the multi-voltage Resau type on the MIlan service or a Duplex, for their seats are truly superb. Shame you were unable to change your seat though !
Thanks! TGVs sure are amazing!
Great video. I share your views on these long SNCF trains as I did a trip a couple of years ago from Paris to Nice and return in a day. Having spent a lot on getting First Class I was very surprised that there was no complementary food or drink and what was offered from the Cafe was basic and very expensive. Found an excellent bakery near the station where I stocked up on food and drink for the return journey.
I also had to use someone else’s seat on return journey as I can not stand travelling backwards on trains. Stunning scenery going down to the South of France as well 👍👍
Thanks 😁
Blimey Dylan, it looked like you were going to walk most of the way to Paris! 😂
Thanks for this lovely video ❤️ Hopefully we can travel again.
Glad you enjoyed!
Hello, friend from Milan here, be safe always on your journey!
Amazing Video
Thanks!
Nice Alps landscapes ... nice report
Great video as always Dylan, thanks. My partner and I did that trip the other way around in June 2014 as part of a Great Rail Journeys holiday to Lake Garda (the least said about the holiday and the mediocre GRT experience the better). A pleasant journey but there was chaos at Chambery as SNCF decided, without warning, to terminate our train there and run it back to Paris. No onboard announcement and it was only by chance that my partner (who speaks French fluently) overheard a conversation and got everybody off the train before it left. Had to swap to the train on the adjacent platform. The onboard crew were as confused as we were and the poor steward who had served lunches between Paris and Chambery was desperately trying to collect the money owed to him. Not SNCF's finest hour. Those seats that don't align with windows are so annoying aren't they. I've never been that impressed with SNCF's first class. The seats are comfortable enough, but it just doesn't feel like first class. Eurostar's Standard Premier is far superior - on the London to Marseille route you get two meals (breakfast and lunch) included in the ticket price.
Thanks! Unorganized is SNCF's forté I'm afraid.
Nice vedio . Thanks Dylan
Glad you enjoyed!
Wow, after that really long walk, a stunning shot of the train locomotive from 2 angles, thanks a lot for that. That is not my idea of a window seat, more like a pillar seat. Seat looks superb though. I was wondering about the speed which seemed kind of slow to me but after 18:20 they really picked it up. The price was kind of steep even considering the scenery. Food service has been an issue in Canada and the U.S. and now seems to have reached Europe. Too bad but a sign of the times I guess. Great show Dylan.
Thanks 😁
Lyon to Paris is the original high-speed line in France. Initially, TGV trainsets served between Paris and Lyon only. As more trainsets became available, ideas to extend TGV services over conventional lines came up, offering direct services to more cities. This video shows perhaps the longest TGV service extension beyond its high-speed realm. From the railway company's viewpoint it's a compromise: it's nice to offer through services, but don't have the expensive TGV trainsets spend too much of their service life at conventional speed.
As more high-speed lines are built, the opportunities for offering through services beyond the high-speed network gradually shift.
Great video! Too bad about window/seat alignment, that sucks. Really high prices for the mediocre food, but I guess that’s what you get. I feel like I’ve been on a trip, when I can’t be there in person! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed 😁
Very very nice video !!
Thanks 😁
Beautiful journey beautiful scenery,,,,watching fromMalaysia,,,nov 2020,lockdown,,
Thank you 👍
great experience thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great vifeo.. showing the ins and outs of TGV travel..which essentially are the same as 20 yesrs ago..I'd only go for 1st class in TGV's.. the price is just a few bucks more than 2nd on most lines..if you book ahed or shortly before you travel. They ride smooth.
Thanks 😁
beautiful train ride from milan to paris beautiful view especially the alps; I love looking at the art at milan station; the food bar was more like the snack bar; you got a beautiful ride at 89 euros for one way. The trains looked beautiful and clean; but people did not have water in bathroom to wash hands; not good during pandemic; some of us forget to bring hand sanitizer.
Food bar overpriced like Amtrak and what bad luck you had with the window alignment you would think after paying 89 euros one way in first class you would get the best window seat.
8:42 Dylan's 🌊 is back guyssss
great trip report yh the misaligned seat must have been annoying especially on such a scenic route but at least you got to still see the amazing views the mountains and also the sunset approaching Paris apart from that the food price should have been reduced but overall great video as always
Maybe you should set up a travel website "The Lad Avoiding Seat 61" !
Lol
nice!
Europe is so forunate to have its great rail system. I have ridden Eurostar a few times between London and Paris, TGV from Paris to Nice, and a couple of Swiss, Italian, and German trains on trips to Europe. It is eerie seeing this during coronavirus with few people and mask wearing like it is in some kind of disaster movie. I am from St. Louis and have ridden all the American trains west of St. Louis in the U.S. and Canada but that was for seeing scenery only. Good video.
Thanks!
You should do a travel report from Paris Montparnasse to Bordeaux St Jean sometime. I travelled on that train to get to my friend's Virtual Reality Cafe it's a nice route.
I love the colourful tunnel station. For me if the seat was backwards then I would try to change seats. Did you tell them about no water?
Oh the art work did they have to?Impressive station it's bones that is not the graffiti art ,some people really are nuts in my humble opinion!!That window seat not so good.Seats lovely et al really .lovely though. Thanks Dylan. 14.46 scenary beautiful hope you appreciate your lovely life. bye, love train travel until I saw these European trains thought mine were good ..still love them never the less. But these are just so good.
Super video. Certainly a trip to take. Did you get the mapping issue resolved that you asked about a few weeks a go?
Thanks! I couldn't find anything practical unfortunately.
Wonderful Compilation. Beautiful Scenery
LOVE THE ART OF THE UNDERGROUND WALKWAY
Not like graffiti in my opinion.
Great video Dylan especially considering you had the worst non window, window seat. Facing backwards with virtually no window would be my undoing and I am surprised that you didn't or couldn't request a seat change.
Thanks! Unfortunately they don't display seat reservations otherwise I would have moved.
Gorgeous scenery. Meal prices very high. Really makes the Czech train look like a bargain. Vive la France 🇫🇷, but GOD BLESS BRITAIN 🇬🇧 🙏 🙌
Did it stopped in Lyon. I’m planning a weekend trip from Turin to Lyon, and I would like to know if you think the TGV is fine, or I’d better take a flixbus
I thought that was good value, great scenery
Hi DylanI enjoyed the videom
Glad you enjoyed 😄
As always a great video and very informative. You had the worst kind of seat as far as I am concerned. No proper window view and backwards to the direction of travel. I get nauseous travelling backwards at high speed. I would have moved if possible, but I see some seats were blocked off because of the Pestilence. Certainly paying that much to be made ill and not seeing much would be unacceptable. You're spot on with your comments on the scenery: it looks like a wonderful journey. Always enjoy your vids. Thanks.
Thanks! Tbh, travelling backwards doesn't bother me. Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to move seats on TGVs as they more often than not, don't display which seats are and aren't reserved.
Never been a boredom to see such scenic views! What is the name of lake when you were in the Bar (14:50)?
Like your tshirt too
Fun fact : When you are at Chambéry Challes les eaux, the train from Milano across the French Alps is meeting the train from Annecy and they make the both train in one train. You should try it. If you come from Annecy, the train is stopping about 15min to meet the other train, if you want to take it in your vids 😉
Nice, thanks for the info.
@@DylansTravelReports no problem 🙂
Wonderful scenery. 😍
You mention you've unsuccessfully attempted this journey twice before ... why didn't it work out? Was that because of COVID-19 and lockdowns?
I travelled from Milan to Paris quite a few years ago but I don't think there was a direct service when I did it. I had to travel by an Italian / Swiss train to Lausanne and then change to a connecting TGV to Paris via Dijon. That was also a very scenic journey. :)
First cancellation was because of lockdown, second one I booked for a date that it turned out I was already doing something else on.
13:15 they really do that? damn, I must've slept most of the way xD. I missed my flight to Brussels and I had to be awake during the entire night and I almost missed the train too because of a subway strike in Turin, I almost died that day xD
i hope the DB will have a sleeper train again!
I once since I built that train in Minecraft (Same Color blue) and it took for me about 3 hours to make the full train design and the cars
Wait, was that walkway at Milan meant to be for one direction only, and was there a separate walkway for the other direction? Or did half those arrows indeed face the wrong way?
No it was just one walkway for both directions. If I'm honest, one-way systems are usually really poorly planned imo.
Greta video mate! Two questions. Do you think 1st class it’s worth it if it’s cost 20% more? And why do they check your id on France entry when you are in Schengen area? Cheers from Argentina!
Thanks! I think first class is worth it because of the long journey times. The ID checks are just a temporary measure due to COVID-19.
@@DylansTravelReports I live in Germany close to the Czech Republic border. It's not unusual for the Bundespolizei in normal times to board a Dresden - Berlin bound train at Bad Schandau, (first station in Germany) walk through the train and carry out random checks if a passenger takes their interest. Same at Bad Bentheim just before the Netherlands. I've even seen German customs officers on the S Bahn between Schöna and Dresden. They're on the lookout for excess cigarettes and other assorted nasties from the CZ border town markets.
I hope as high speed rail in Europe increases that Eurostar do a sleeper line across the Pyrenees and the Alps.
don't eurostar do the london -bourg st maurice for skiing in winter ?or london -avignon/marseille during summer ?a few years ago they did
@@dazlebluefrogify they might have in the past, but not anymore.
👌👌👌👌
nice video!
may i reccomend a train service i am personally a big fan of? I really like the ÖBB EC 163/164, a long distance train from Graz to Zurich with the old Eurofima coaches and beautiful lanscape. When you buy in advance with Sparschiene, it can go as low as 35€ in a second class compartment coach ^^
Thanks! That one sounds cool!
Good morning from Arizona, USA! That sucks that you don't have a full window, plus the water didn't work in the restroom. Stay safe Dilly and continued success!
Mind you it isn't really a high speed train in the Alps, trains don't travel anything in excess of 100mph. Did you check out the cool small second class bit in the very rear?
Tbh, I didn't even notice the little 2nd class section until I watched my footage back. Kinda cool though.
What happens to the angle of your tray if you are using it and the person in front of you reclines their seat?
Nothing as the seats are hard shell.
Will you review the new ICE 4 or refurbished ICE 3 sometime?
Maybe they expect you to use the seat's "amazing recline" to get a better view? Couldn't you have switched to a better seat though? It didn't look very busy when you got up for your wander.
That's what I was wondering. Can you change seats if nobody is occupying it?
You can't change seats on a TGV as they don't display which seats are reserved or not. Also, the seats' recline is the sort where the base of the seat moves forward to not negatively impact the person behind's legroom.
Absolutely brilliant video, I myself was fascinated by the TGV trains when I was younger and still have a love for them today. Would love to get myself a journey on one of them sometime in the future.
Shame about the so-called "window seat" though, it annoys me as well when you get a seat that doesn't properly align with the view from the Window. Train companies really need to do a better job of seat placement imho, or at the very least avoid mislabeling seats like that...
Otherwise, I hope that wasn't too much of a problem for you and it looked like you still had a great train journey at least anyway. ;)
Well 11.90 is very expensive, but hey, you got a Coke with N'Golo Kanté on the can. 😎 The coolest thing ever! 😂✌️
The train doesn't look full. Would they let u move to another seat?
I really wish I could travel. But, here in the US, we still aren't allowed to leave the country unless we are going to":
-Albania -Bermuda
-Anguilla -Cambodia
-Antigua and Barbuda -Colombia
-Aruba -Costa Rica
-Barbados -Croatia
-Bahrain -Curacoa
-Belarus -Dominicana
-Belize -French Polynesia
And most of these places have restrictions.
Quality video, will you be doing any American train trips again in the near future?
Thanks! I want to do more American trips but the current ban on travellers from Europe is preventing that.
7:36 i hate when the window is like that
I'm still wondering what "And the pretty decent hard product only adds to the experience" means. Could anybody please help and explain?
What's up with the ID check between Italy and France?
Nice to see a bit of this route as I was booked on it in 2019 but on reaching Paris found it was closed due to a landslide at Modane. Almost zero help from SNCF. I had to rebook via Basle for nearly €300. It had a 5 minute connection but we were 2 minutes late; sprinting over the steps I just scrambled on to my connection. Nul points SBB! Why wasn't it cross-platform, as I expected for an advertised international connection? European railways are not always all they are cracked up to be. Have travelled from Lille to Lyon on a double-deck TGV; cross platform connection from Eurostar and great views "on top", but only one door per carriage! So the train dropped time simply due to delays at stations as passengers struggled to board and alight. British trains are generally more frequent and still pretty fast end-to-end, and no more expensive if you can get advance fares.
"Zero help from SNCF" seems about right when they delay/cancel your train unfortunately. Hope you got your money back!
@@DylansTravelReports Luckily I was on a work trip and they paid. I don't think they bothered pursuing it. They would probably only get the original cheaper ticket refunded. For a private individual travel insurance could cover the rest. To be fair, the same thing happens on the airlines, as I discovered when fog broke my connection at San Francisco.
I would say the Swiss train that goes through the Swiss alps is the nicest in my opinion
