- In this episode of my series “ Walks in Dorset”, I take a 6 mile circular walk from Highcliffe Castle (located to the East of Christchurch) to Mudeford Quay, across to Hengistbury Head & back. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car at the Steamer Point car park and after a quick wander along the beach, I initially head Eastwards through the Steamer Point Nature Reserve to visit Highcliffe Castle.
Leaving Highcliffe Castle, I return through the Nature Reserve and head Westwards along the promenade, past Gundimore House, The Anchorage & Sandhills to Mudeford Quay.
At this point I take the ferry for a short ride across to Mudeford Sandbank where I come across the starting point for the 64 mile Stour Valley way long distance path.
After a short climb up on to the top of Hengistbury Head, I get to enjoy some stunning 360 degree views - looking back North towards Christchurch as well as West to Old Harry Rocks & East to the Isle of Wight.
At the double dykes at the Western end of Hengistbury Head, I start my return journey by taking the “land train” back to the Mudeford sandbank jetty …. it was a bumpy ride (!) …. and then the ferry back to Mudeford Quay.
After light refreshments at the Haven House Inn, I continue back to the start of my walk at the Steamer Point car park.

I use a GOPRO HERO 7, 8 or 10 Black Action Camera (sometimes with a Gimbal) & a Rode microphone (either a “Shotgun” or a Rode Wireless Go) together with a Canon Powershot SX530 HS.
Now this is a route that is doable for me. I laughed out loud reading the ferry price board at the end of the vlog...Parrots free, kitchen sink £1.00 🤣🤣🤣 Someone has a sense of humour.
luv the grounds path pond to Highcliffe, pleasant country walk and views of Mudeford
It is a lovely Nature reserve - and of course not far from the beach!
Hi Dave, thank you for a most interesting walk. My wife and I thoroughly enjoy your walks and love your whippet, Logan. What a wonderful friend he is to you. Thank you very much, we always look forward to your walks.
Kind regards to you from both of us.
Thank you both. Yes, Logan is a great companion for me on my walks for sure.
Really enjoy! I`ll watch that again . Sweet Logan! love you.
Thank you & indeed thanks for watching.
I used to visit Highcliffe in the 70s.
We stayed at the campsite behind the pub.
In an Edwardian wooden tram with original fittings and oil wick lamps.
It was amazing.
The back wall was knocked out and extended.
Massive blackberry bushes at the back and outdoor loo.
It’s long gone but would be worth loads now.
What a great adventure.
Logan would have been very interested in the blackberries!
A 5 minute drive from us and a regular haunt - so glad you enjoyed it!
What a great walk to have on your doorstep Kev.
Brings back great memories of sailing trips from Mudeford, thanks.
Will do that walk sometime.
Cheers👍😀
Thank you Simon & indeed thanks for watching.
Dave this is a beautiful video from beginning to the end. Just a lovely place to walk . I hope you and Logan have a wonderful weekend. Thanks so much for all you do. Every video is just so special. 👏🏻
Thank you Melissa. The weather was really great that day which added to the enjoyment of the walk.
I am considering moving to the area so found this positive video most informative; a BIG thank you.
Thank you. If you do decide to move then I hope that all goes well. Thanks for watching.
Another great, very professional video. Thankyou
Thank you David. :)
Thanks Dave we did this walk yesterday it was great 👍
Thanks Kevin. Glad you enjoyed your walk.
Loved the video, not been to heingistbury head for years. My daughter was a babe in arms she's now 46 with 5 children and the eldest is 21. Much has changed in all those years.26:18 s
Thank you Jacqueline.
A great video - we go to this area quite a lot, and always enjoy it there.
Thanks Pauline. Certainly plenty to see & explore around there.
Good evening Dave very enjoyable video fantastic views interesting history so very enjoyable Craig
Thank you Craig. :)
Dave, that was lovely. We know the area well but you gave us some interesting history. I think your wife was your camera lady. 😊. 🏖
Thank you Cathy. Yes indeed, Mrs Ford was busy with the camera for the "Ferry" footage!
We’re visiting there next week. Hopefully we’ll love it and move there. This video really helps. Looks great.
Thanks Stuart. I hope that you have good weather for your visit. Thanks for watching.
Just discovered your great videos especially this one at Highcliffe. We had many enjoyable holidays in this area many moons ago and it was absolutely lovely to reminisce while following you around. Love your dog Logan too. One man and his dog ❤️
Thank you Linda and indeed welcome to the channel! I hope that you enjoy the future videos in the series. Thanks for watching.
Very pleased to hear there will be future videos but in the meantime I will be catching up with your previous ones 😁. Thank you again for these great videos.
I’ve just shared this to my friend saying I think we should do this walk, it looks stunning❤️
I hope that you have an enjoyable walk there and that you have good weather.
I've really been looking forward to this video when I saw behind the scenes glimpses of your trip back in June. What a brilliant idea for an outing. I don't think I've ever been on that ferry and lived in Bournemouth for nearly 25 years. Thanks Dave.
Thanks Rachel. We enjoyed making that film!
Thank you, Dave really enjoyed that.
My grandparents used to take my brother, sister and I to Mudeford for a walk on the beach and a play in the sand. Saw my first jellyfish on Mudeford beach. After the beach they'd take us to Barton-on-Sea to get fish and chips then on to Highcliff to eat them.
My wife and I did the same with our children before they became teenagers.
Now it's Mrs G and me down to Mudeford, scallops from the fish stall then cook them in the back of the work van in the car park.
Love it.
Thank you and indeed thanks for sharing your lovely memories of the area.
Great video Dave. I was on holiday down in Christchurch staying near Hengistbury the week you posted this and some bar staff in the bar on the beach at Southbourne said they'd seen dolphins just off shore the day before!
Wow - I would have loved to have seen those!
Thank you, that was so interesting. If you're into reading, I seem to remember Edward Rutherford's book 'Salisbury' mentions Hengistbury Head. It's fiction, but based on a lot of historical facts about the area.
Thanks Angela - I shall certainly look that one up.
Dave this video is totally in the footsteps of weekend outings with my parents, my sister and our 2 English Setters in the late 60's/early 70's. I so enjoyed watching. Thank you.
Thank you Mark. :)
Another perfect day in Dorset Dave, makes me think you have voodoo powers, all we seem to get is cloud, rain and wind!
Is the cafe still there mid-way along the beach huts at Mudeford? Memories of cold, breezy winter walks on a Sunday morning, up around the Head, then pop into the cafe for a warming, steaming mug of hot chocolate before returning to the car. I'm talking probably 20 years ago so the cafe might be gone now. Excellent work as usual.
I have visited and walked here a few times. It's a lovely area and I always enjoy the ferry ride. Sometimes I walk along the harbour shoreline parallel to your bumpy train ride which is a nice walk by the waterside. You had one or two mishaps with the bumpy road and rogue wave!! How did Logan like the doggie ice cream? Thanks for sharing the beauty of Hengistbury and surroundings and for all the interesting information about Highcliffe castle.
Thanks Jean. Logan loved his special "ice cream for dogs"!
A sunny tale and and a nice walk! Thanks for sharing Dave!
Thank you Hannu. :)
I haven’t visited Mudeford or Hengistbury Head for at least 50 years, when I lived in Southampton as a kid. My father as an OS surveyor would probably have used that trig point occasionally. There used to be bamboo growing on the headland. How it got there I don’t know, but local scout troops, including mine, were tasked with harvesting the stuff. It was sent up to London Zoo for the Giant Panda. Thanks for another gentle stroll through the landscape and in this case, down memory lane too.
Thanks Mark & indeed thank you for the background information about the headland.
Hello Dave nice to see highcliffe and mudeford again we used to live at Ashley new Milton. We miss the nice scenery and the nice beach. I bet that water was cold ! Thanks again for taking us on a walk. God bless. Ralph and Sheila
Thank you both. We were lucky with the weather that day so the water wasn't too cold for Logan!
Very nice Dave! I've been in the Haven House Inn on many occasions over the years, the last time was around 3 years ago. Its quite quirky inside. There are quite a few interesting pubs as you walk along the lanes in the area. I used to go to Mudeford Quay as a kid and sit on the edge crab fishing. There used to be a lot of holiday chalets to let on the top of Highcliffe, but I think they've all gone now due to erosion. I hope the pint eased things at the end before you got wet feet! Cheers!
Thanks. I was delighted to discover that the pub stocked Ringwood Best - the perfect way to end a walk on a hot day!
@@DaveFord Fabulous! I've had many good pints in there with smashing food too!
Amazing walking tour with stunning views and trails and a wonderful train ride
Thanks Keith. That train ride was memorable .... for all sorts of reasons!
Loved the walk. One of our favourite places. Visit Hengitsbury whenever we can. Will definitely Visit Highcliffe Castle next time we're down. Go Logan...love his zooming. Xx
Logan certainly loved that sand!
Loved your visit to my home turf. I’ve not been able to walk the Head for some time so brought back some happy memories. We used to walk our greyhounds there too
Thank you Gloria. "Longdogs" are simply the best!
Great walk with beautiful scenery. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you & indeed thanks for watching.
Beautiful video once again Dave, brought back memories of the early seventies and my time spent in that area working at a small panel shop on Southbourne Overcliff, would often drive down to Hengistbury Head for a luchtime wander around or a couple of pints in the Saxon Inn.
Thanks John. What a great place to go at lunchtime - especially on a sunny day!
I love that place Dave. Walked around there many times and over to Hengestbury on a couple of occasions. Of course, when the tide is running through that narrow channel, the ferry can't operate. Those Land Trains are best on a smooth surface , as you discovered.
Yep, that "land train" journey was quite an experience!
Thanks
Thank you very much for your Super Thanks - very kind of you.
Great video Dave. We do have an historical and stunning countryside ? May it continue to be active and appreciated !
Thanks Geoff. That was a slightly different walk to our usual ones!
