WALKS IN DORSET at SEATOWN & EYPE MOUTH (4K)

  • In this episode of my series “ Walks in Dorset”, I take a 4 mile circular walk from Seatown (on the Jurassic Coast) to Lower Eype and back. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
    I park my car at a car park in Seatown (cost £6 for the day) and have a quick look around the village - basically The Anchor Inn and a few houses as well as a beach (which does not allow dogs between 1st May & 30th September).
    My walk starts with an uphill section along the South West Coast Path towards Doghouse Hill & then Thorncombe Beacon where I get to enjoy some stunning views both out to sea & inland.
    I drop down to Eype Mouth and have a wander along the beach (which allows dogs all year round) before having an exploration through the prety village of Lower Eype.
    After visiting St Peters church on the brow of a hill (sadly it is not open), I head Westwards uphill and across meadows to Down House Farm and then back to the South West Coast path at Thorncombe Beacon for my return journey.
    My final destination is the Anchor Inn at Seatown.
    XXX NB: The cliffs along this stretch of the Jurassic Coast are unstable - indeed there have been cliff collapses recently. So it is important to ensure that you do not walk too closely to the edge of the cliffs and keep to the public footpaths.

    This brought back memories of family camping holidays in the 80’s at Seatown. We had a big frame tent but I can see it’s mostly static caravans now. We looked forward to drinks and basket meals at the Anchor Inn and I remember walking up to the top of Golden Cap. Happy memories, thank you Dave and Logan.

    Thank you Dave & Logan...I know this area well as I live these last three and a half years (from Surrey) 25 minutes away, it still looks wonderful and great with all your extra info' too (as I had forgotten some of it). No doubt you know, but there are amazing sunsets on Eype beach, sadly getting ruined with extra signs, bigger car park, so more visitors - but we are a small island, the UK, so at least more people can enjoy the area, I guess! I love Logan, an adorable companion, and I can see you love him very much - KEEP enjoying, both of you and thank you!!! for sharing - Good wishes for lovely adventures :).

    Hi Dave, you have a rare knack of metaphorically bringing your viewers along with you. I saw several scenes that I’ve made note of for future painting subjects. The flowers clinging to the cliff at around 13 minutes might be Sea Pinks or Sea Thrift (Armeria maritima). I can’t be sure from your video so it’s just a suggestion. As always thanks for a super walk.

    Thank you Dave as always. Is it better to walk backwards downhill?
    Walk Backwards - It may seem counterintuitive to walk backwards downhill. But stop and think about it! You are not putting your joints under undue strain or stress. The leg muscles and joints are working in the same way as when walking uphill, just in reverse. How about that? Give it a try Dave and you'll have to give Logan the same training.

    • @DaveFord

      I find walking downhill far tougher on the knees than walking uphill. I've not tried it backwards, though it sounds like it makes sense. It is, after all, what one does on a ladder, or on the steep steps aboard a ship etc.

    The usual high standard Dave, a quite superb walk, and like you say, the countryside is absolutely beautiful. I have been that way once, started at West Bay, on to Eype and Seatown , then a loop back inland to West Bay. Going west is equally beautiful up to Golden Cap, but whichever way you go it's certainly a workout for the lungs and legs! One point I'd like to raise though: being a "northerner" (Bristol) I'd contend that the SW Coast Path actually runs from Minehead to Poole. Just saying.

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  Před 10 měsíci +1

    • @eldred1809
      @eldred1809 Před 10 měsíci +1

      It certainly would Dave, I've done about 30%, all in separate stages, not in one fell swoop, it's something the younger me promised myself I'd do, alas poor health means it's unlikely to happen. Sadly. But if you did it, you'd have enough video's for a couple of years! You could then put your feet up for a while.

    What a beautiful area for your walk and what a glorious day to do it. A few hills to climb as well. Seatown was strangely quiet considering the weather. Tha old sheep dip was interesting. I can't believe it's been used for many a long year. Wasn't much water in that stream to have powered a mill, but then there wasn't so much water extraction in those far off days. @@DaveFord Yes she is. She has a stressful job dealing with employees in one of America's largest banks, so she tries to get out lunchtimes, and for much longer walks over the weekends. It has changed her life and made her so happy, and she enjoys it so much. She's been practising with her new drone so soon she will capture some wider angle shots. The only downside across the pond is they don't have our pub culture, so there's no pub in every area to check the beer for research purposes only of course! 🍺😄
