  • Well, it's been some time. We have a few videos we'd like to share from last fall and this is one. We got out several of our old corn shellers and decided to show you each one. This might be a good video to watch for the homesteader or the small-scale chicken farmer to decide which sheller might serve you the best. They each have their strengths and weaknesses and it's just fun to see how each one works. We sure have fun doing this and we hope you enjoy watching.

    Ive got the old metal IIHC sheller. I bought it at a farm sale. It was a day after a rain. The sheller was in the corn crib of the farm having the sale. I had a 46 Chevy pickup. I was going to go get it. My uncle Milt and a neighbor said, if I went down there to get it, Id stay stuck down there. I said well see. I drove down to the crib, went in, and found it was bolted to the floor. I didnt have any tools, so I had to rip it away from the bolts holding it to the floor. The owner of the farm, had a junked F-30. that he sold. BUT he also had a operators manual for it in good condition. I wantecd to buy it, but he said the junker would sell better IF the manual went with it, Besides, he said, I dont think you have an F-30, after I told him I had one. I got their late. I wanted to buy a grain drill, but I got there too late. I ended up buying one with a bad bed. It is a 1924 IHC drill. Ive replaced the wood twice. First time it cost me $12. Second time $50., and the wood from the first installment was way better than the other. The first was in around 70. The next was around 90. I had a 20 & a 30, so I took the 30 to go get the drill. I showed up and he said (Ill be damned, u do have a 30, but the manuals gone)

      Well at least you taught him not to doubt you! Interesting the sheller was bolted down in the crib. Was your uncle Milt right or did that 46 climb right up outa there?

    I seen the hand crank corn sheller title , Had to take a look. ended up watching the whole video. I'm not sure if I seen
    one before. I'll bet being 68 yrs old , I just don't remember, cause I went to a lot of Southern Wi auctions with my dad in the 1960's.
    and maybe 50 or 100 farm auctions by myself. All I can think of is cream separators.

      @OzziesOddities  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Yeah southern Wisconsin has some good auctions. A lot of good old small farmers down there. I've seen a lot of cream separators made into flower pots already. I'm sure you've seen a corn sheller or two. They were a lot more common a bit earlier when more farms raised chickens though I think.

    U commented using it as a kid. I remember my grandad also named Bill had me cranking the sheller, (It was an IHC also) when I was around 6 or 7. I was mad at him, as he would feed it. Both had/have troughs to hold a couple doz ears, and hed just slide one in after another, and id wind down slower and slower, as he wouldnt let me build up the speed . Almost all the machinery and tools ect that was at home came from my grandmas first husband, who had money. Grandad and dad never oiled anything that I ever saw, so the sheller, grinder, post drill all broke up. Dad had us take the bolts out of a sulkey and a gang plow and a one row cultivator, and he junked the rest. He finally bought a WC AC that he ran over my older brother with (steel wheeled), and he complained that the front wheel, one of them would fall off. He bought it used. It was a 37 and he bought it likely in 41 or 2.

    The deere&webber style we had a neighbor we called one arm Stanley as he lost an arm in a work accident, He was inventive and hooked up an electric motor yo a pulley where the hand crank handle was and used it for not only corn but we ran over 30 bushel of black walnuts through it in about 2 hours time. Lots faster than by hand or with Ozzies contraption.

    • @OzziesOddities
      @OzziesOddities  Před 2 měsíci

      Yes that's a good idea. I've never tried walnuts through a motorized sheller, but I can tell you it's not really very fast through the crank sheller and the walnut scuzz stays on the sheller forever.

  • @williamchristopher1560

    I remember you didnt want to get hit by the handle while it was still spinning around. We usually kept putting eacouple ears in it without turning it to wind it down.. Ours, both of them had the fan. Ive got mine belted up to work. It also has a slanted or flared outward pulley on the flywheel. Its built that way so that, when a one lunger, as you have fires off, the belt will slide out on the pulley, then slide back in.
    Im working on my 40 B Farmall to get it running. I bought a new coil and condenser for the mag, but that hasnt helped it. Belted it to my 48 H Farmall, ran it. Stopped it and turned the mag 1/2 round and ran it again. No go. Hope to have it running tomorrow. Aint getting any spark out on the wires
    Didnt make any hay last year. The NH bailer I bought, and paid $934 to have it in tip top runniung order didnt bale. Finally found a spring (the wrong one) that they had put on it had come loose. I FINALLY found the ONLY spring made for that part in the USA According to NH. I intend to take it to a spring Co in Tulsa, to either buy some more if they have them, or find someone who can make it

    • @OzziesOddities
      @OzziesOddities  Před rokem

      I had trouble with my B Farmall with the belly mower. I couldn't get any spark. We checked everything and we finally found it was a bad condencer. Put in new points and condencer and we had spark. Maybe that's it, hope you figure it out.
      Hard to get new parts for New Holland, easier to find them in the junkyard than anywhere else.
      Always known belt pulleys to have a crown in the center. Is that how yours is or something different?

    The Chevy, WITH the sheller in back easily weighing 100lbs climbed right back out. It was a good little pk. Only slight problem was it would fall out of 2nd. I just kept my hand on the shifter till I put it in high. It had the outside visor. I had the center bracket on the visor loosened so as toibe able to crank the windshield out. One day a simi passed me, and that ripped the brace out of the center strap in the center of te window. I didnt keep it loose after that.
    As to the sheller belt pulley, it rises from the inside to the outside, with a higher flange at the outside, to catch the belt from a one lunger when it fires

    Like you, I started early with my grandad. The sheller had a trough to lay a doz or so ears. It was an IHC also
    Grandpa would give the flywheel a spin and I was expected to keep it going after that. He would keep putting in ears and I kept getting slower and slower, and i thought , )dangit granpa, quit feeding it and let me catch up)

    Great to see your wonderful presentations again. You have motivated me to get busy making videos again. I have another Marvel Schebler carb to rebuild. I have also thought of doing a video on tools. I am an aircraft mechanic by trade, and I would like to see more young folks get into some of the trades. Anyway I am rambling, but I don't like seeing new mechanics spend a lot of money on fancy tools when all they need are the basics to start off with. Well I sure have a grin from ear to ear seeing you again my Friend!

    • @OzziesOddities
      @OzziesOddities  Před rokem +1

      Thank you so much! That's a good idea for a video. Essential tools for beginning mechanics. I must have a tool here and a tool there from at least 100 garage sales. I went to college for industrial arts. Right as I was leaving school they started to change it over to "industrial Technology" and sold out the shop rooms. This was all back in the early 70s. That didn't last too long. Taught high school shop for a couple years but most of the kids didn't care, and I was always afraid a few of them were going to hurt themselves. So I stuck to farming. I think that's one of the reasons I like your channel, you've got the detail of a teacher. I don't have to try to guess what you've done because you're telling me and showing me clearly.
