Carefully Shrinking a Baseball Cap

  • How to use moisture and heat to reduce the size of a fitted baseball cap that is just a little too large. If you've stretched it too much or got the wrong size, this could help you tighten the cap, but maybe just short of a full 1/8 size of shrink.
    NOTE: This technique will not provide a major amount of shrinkage. Other methods may do that, but also have side effects for the shape of the cap!

I have a question: i bought a new 59fify, it's a 7 1/4 cap and it fits well on the forehead, but the problem is that the crown and the up part of the cap is to high and looks very goofy... Does this method will shrink the entire cap if it's made of wool? My ears bend down when i wear it hahah

    • @dreinthe616
      @dreinthe616  Před 6 lety +3

      No, for a peak in the crown you will probably have to shape the front two panels that have the buckram bonded to the inside - this technique is not great for that. The buckram can be shaped by applying heat (hair dryer) and then holding pressure on where you want to shape it while it cools down. For a couple of examples check out my tutorial on shaping - czcams.com/video/8N-EL-rmgIc/video.html - and locally modifying buckram under the logo - czcams.com/video/pgNEVctzjuM/video.html I'd suggest using your palm to flatten the peak after heating. If anyone’s looking for a way to shrink a polyester hat a good amount I found that just putting it in the washer and dryer made the most difference in shrinking it and breaking it in, even tho the washer softens the beak a lot

    • @dreinthe616
      @dreinthe616  Před 3 lety +1

      It definitely shrinks it, but what I found (and shared in the later part of the video) is that it really draws the fibers in and gives a slightly 'shriveled' or puckered look, in addition to breaking down the visor as you mentioned. I like to preserve the clean look, so that's why I don't go with the 'brute force' approach. I've also posted other videos about adding filler inside the sweatband when you need to go a little further.

    Hey Doug,
    Greetings from Oz, I feel like I know you already after watching all of your videos, some 2 or 3 times. Question for you, and I think I know what your answer will be but I'll ask it anyway. Have you ever tried to shrink a cap using an oven? There are many videos of people claiming great results doing this but I just wondered what your take on it was? Also, can you recommend any websites that have a good range of caps, MLB 59fifty fitted in particular, which actually ship to Australia ? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Your passion for fitted NewEra caps is infectious, I have recently bought 9 caps and a Hat jack following watching your videos...

    • @dreinthe616
      @dreinthe616  Před 5 lety +2

      Hey, greetings to you as well David - thanks for all the praise! Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions as far as vendors that ship caps to your part of the world. I was actually going to do a video sometime soon with a comparison of online vendors, but all are USA-based to my knowledge. Sorry I can't help on that one, but I'm glad you're getting value out of a lot of my other vids! And as far as shrinking with an oven - the point is using heat to shrink, so I suppose that could be a source as well... but I have never done it, and would only worry about what is called a 'transition temperature' for the plastic elements in the cap (i.e. fibers in the buckram).

    Hey Dre, thanks for your informative channel. I have a slightly loose Ebbets Field 6-panel wool hat with a soft visor. Would this shrinking method possibly work for this kind of hat? As all six of the panels are soft with no firm backing, can I wet all of them for more even results? Do you think the stitched-on felt emblem on the front be affected? Also I too would be interested in seeing your comparative results using a clothes steamer if you ever end up testing that method.

    I have a 100% cotton 59fifty hat that is my size but an extremely large/ high crown. Do you recommend this method or another?

    • @elijah4878
      @elijah4878 Před 4 lety

      I don’t think you can shrink the size of the crown, and if you were to try you’d probably make the hat too small

      Depends on the buckram in the cap - if it's typical New Era buckram, it can't really be 'shrunk', but it can be molded "lower" to your head. You should check out one of my original videos - czcams.com/video/8N-EL-rmgIc/video.html - and use the third technique there.

    Does this only work for wool fitteds ?

    • @dreinthe616
      @dreinthe616  Před 3 lety

      No, you can still get some shrink from polyester and acrylic/wool blend fitteds - just not quite as much as the wool. Just make sure you're also wetting the sweatband and the inside panels of the cap, and dry it thoroughly. If that doesn't get where you need you can also try this from one of my other videos: czcams.com/video/yG9rcE7UuVI/video.html Thanks

    Can you do this method multiple times?

    • @dreinthe616
      @dreinthe616  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, in fact it works best if you do... I tend to go for 2-3 times, then switch to the other method that I've shown ( czcams.com/video/yG9rcE7UuVI/video.html ) if you still need to remove a little more size, thanks.

    How can that possibly shrink the band and reduce the hat/head size?

    • @dreinthe616
      @dreinthe616  Před 5 lety

      Short answer - it really can't shrink the band and plastic sizing inside. The best thing it does is shrink the fibers in the fabric of the cap, slightly drawing in the band. I tried to make a few disclaimers in the video, this is not a huge change. If you really need to get it smaller without tossing it into a clothes dryer and possibly destroying the look of the cap, I'd suggest this way instead: czcams.com/video/yG9rcE7UuVI/video.html

    Hey, Doug
    I know it’s been forever but I have a question. Can I wet the inside of the cap and dry it from in there as well?? I have a hat that has stitching all around it and I don’t want to damage it

    • @dreinthe616
      @dreinthe616  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, that's actually important to do also - wet the sweatband and the inside of the back four panels. Thanks.

    Is it possible to shrink a poliester 7 1/4 to a 7 1/8 if so how many time would I do the method ?

    • @dreinthe616
      @dreinthe616  Před 5 lety

      For that I'd try it 2-3 times. Make sure you get the outside and inside of the cap wet (including the sweatband, but keep the visor dry). If that doesn't work, I have another video to help - check out czcams.com/video/yG9rcE7UuVI/video.html for another way to fix the size, thanks.

      It was an MLB "Graphite on Black" collection, probably from 2016/17 - I bought it in 2017 from Lids.com.

    My brother recently gave me a few diamond era hats and they’re 7 1/8 but I wear a 7. Would this process work with the diamond era material?? Thanks in advance

    • @dreinthe616
      @dreinthe616  Před 5 lety +1

      Works best with wool of course, but I'll admit I have not tried the Diamond Era. You may also want to try an insert material to take up the slack, my other video at czcams.com/video/yG9rcE7UuVI/video.html might be a good way to go, thanks.
