As for the empty seat at the table, it wasn't sarcasm. Of course, nowadays we are talking about a place for a "stray wanderer", but in the past, when Poland was not Christian, our ancestors believed that the souls of deceased ancestors returned to the world of the living for a moment to celebrate with their loved ones (many pagans today still believe in this). It was for them that an empty place was left at the table, and sometimes even entire tables full of food, so that they could eat.
