A Rural Vermonter got a 2003 that has 76k on it just sat for 14 years got it running yesterday after replacing fuel lines and battery you know the need requirements too get a truck running for sitting for years going too try and drive here home after tomorrow

Just got an 07 lbz with 345k and it looks mint save for wear on the drivers seat, traded my 09 with the 6.0 for it
Spray the truck with oil the fenders doors tailgate inner bedsides floors and frame and it’ll last a long time great looking truck.
@mustie1 uses bar & chain oil, which seems like a good idea....
Cosmoline Rp 342 been using it forever best stuff out there doesnt wash off with water, soap, or salt, self healing and breathable, similar to oil.

QuentinC no sir , I’ve been using it 14 years and applied correctly it needs to be redone every 2-3 years . I can show you pics of my vehicles . Better then por 15 better then any paint you can apply

It’s actually a 4L80HD and those will have “piston slap” but it’s not a problem at all they still run perfect
my 6.0 has slap. never bothered me none. it's just a chevy making chevy noises.

Those exhaust manifold bolts break all the time. Manifold should be ok, though
yep, mine had 4 broken bolts. sucked in fresh air through the leaks, and messed with O2 readings. Truck had less power than a 4.3 S10 it was pulling so much timing lol
Zac Price had a v6 ranger doing the same thing. Kept blowing out exhaust onto a plug wire and melting it causing a horrible misfire

I needed something newer, comfortable, and reliable for every day. now I've got both since I treated myself to my ford as a toy. I totally get why you did what you did. Nice Truck!

Also give me a shout if you have any questions about your 240, mine (92 sedan 5MT) has nearly 270k and I've been through just about every inch of that sucker!
Replace the plugs and coils for that misfire. Use iridium plugs from a local parts store and a coil set off amazon. Will save you a ton of money. Also get busy with a needle scaler on the frame. Get all the scale off it, paint it with rustoleum black, then fluid film it. I'd also check out the inner rockers and floor pans if you haven't already, the rockers don't look exactly right.
It looks like a good deal. The misfire could be any of the cylinders. But I know that you will use a scan tool to figure out which one.

Have a 2002 with the 8.1 and allison transmission. Np have 400thousand. Still runs great
what kind of fuel mileage are you getting with that 8.1?
Fuel mileage on my 8.1 is great even with 35 inch Toyo MT and that Allison transmission is perfect for towing. Compared to the small block 350 vortec it’s soooo much better on fuel. Mine has 100k miles thanks for the post I have many miles to look forward to. I love my 8.1
8.1s are beastly. Im guessing u can feel the frame twist right off idle from the insta-torque?

That's a great truck, bud! Keep up on the maintenance and it will last forever! Definitely do some rust prevention and treatment, I just got rid of a 2005 that had almost 300k miles on it and still ran like a champ. The body was rotting away on me though, so I traded up to a 2019. I miss the old one :(

I had a similar issue with the transmission linkage with my 2000 Chevy Suburban. I purchased an aftermarket bushing from BushingFix. I cleaned off the old shift arm, replaced the bushing on the transmission shift cable, and it solved the issue. It was like a $20 fix for me, so maybe something to consider. I couldn't get zip ties to work reliably for me. Otherwise, great truck!

A Silverado in that general condition (in the physical sense) would probably have an $8,000.00 to $12,000ish price tag on it around here. But how many times have we as buyers of used vehicles, or other mechanical equipment. heard "Ah hell....That's never happened before." when we showed up at the sealers house or business to test it out before buying it. I'm 65 and quit counting sometime back in the early 1980s. Keep up the great videos as time and "social distancing" allow.
The K10 was a bucket list truck, you had your fun and made a great profit, enough said, you don't need to justify your decision. I like the new one, I know nothing about trucks but for the age of it it looks a good solid truck and with that mileage it will last a long time.

WOW! It still has rockers and cab corners. You don't see that in northern Illinois. Clean GM trucks sell around $10,000 private sale and start around $13,000 and go up on dealers lots. My 03 has 80k and is a rust bucket. Great video.

you probably figured this out already but the trans linkage has a small plastic bushing that inserts in the end of the cable. you can usually find them at most auto parts stores. nice truck!
Nice looking truck! I'd say you got a pretty good deal. With the rust on the frame I would want to check or even replace the steel brake lines along the frame rails. Not fun when they blow out on ya.
Put fluid film on that entire frame it’s scary looking and with fluid film you’ll never have to worry about it rotting out . Check the inner frame rails going to the motor mounts . Known to rot out there , yes especially on the 2500hd
That frame is clean for a northern truck! Completely normal.
cambo1200 I live in salt belt pa . That’s not normal . It’s rusting and will rust through without treatment .
NEPAMOTORHEAD I live in the salt belt too but we see this type of frame rust all the time. At least up here in Michigan no one seems to treat it, maybe your salt in PA is more corrosive.
cambo1200 probably . But his frame rust is very dark no paint left it looks like . Fluid film or Kroil will bring that right back and keep it from getting worse . I’ve seen tons of trucks with less rust have broken frames because of it

I bought a fix it kit off the shelf at oreillys for the shift linkage for mine been working great for a long time also check engine could be it needs a crank relearn with a scan tool

One thing I would suggest is getting tow mirrors if pulling a camper trailer. Got brand new ones with integrated turn signals and heated on eBay for 85 bucks

I suggest replacing the exhaust manifold bolts ASAP. Vortecs are known to suck in fresh air, rather than expel exhaust out the manifold leak. This screws with your O2 readings. I dealt with this for a year on my 03 6.0. Low power to the point I had to floor it to get up to highway speed with an empty car trailer, 8mpg in town... I replaced MAF, plugs/wires, tested coil pack resistance, checked compression, checked fuel pressure, gutted the cats. Loaded up live diagnostics and found it was pulling a shitload of timing. Parked it and only used ti when I needed to haul gravel or yard waste. In the latter part of last winter I got a shop and finally got around to doing the bolts and found 4 had broken off. 2 on each side. Truck was sucking in air and messing with O2 readings. It thought it was lean so it dumped fuel in and pulled timing trying to compensate. Luckly I have aluminum heads, so I was able to weld a nut to all but the last bolt on the back of the head drivers side (wand couldnt get in there, trans tunnel in the way). I applied a LIBERAL amount of copper gasket seal to both sides of the factory gasket, heads, and block and installed grade 10.9 large headed bolts.
Truck now has twice the power according to butt dyno and gets 11mpg in town (average for my hilly town)
Unfortunately you have iron heads, so get em done before they crack. They always do. Poor design on the manifolds and bolts. Chevy used a small headed bolt and when the manifolds get hot they expand and apply lateral pressure to the bolts, which cracks them.
As for the trans linkage, it's probably missing the clip that holds it in place. If its still there bend it in to create more grip. or buy a new one, chevy used the same linkage for the 4.8-8.1L trucks/suv's.
The way you look at it, you got to drive a fun truck around and even made some money. Even if you lost money (say $500), you spent $500 to drive around a fun truck for 6 months. That's a good deal to me. It's good to change things up every once in a while. Keeps the mind fresh! This looks like a fun project.

When you go to replace the manifold bolts just use a welder for any bolts that break off .
I had an 06 2500hd with the 6.0 now i have an 02 2500hd duramax I had great luck with both of them. My only complaint is i had to replace the rear transfercase housing on both of them for the "pump rub" issue. So keep your eye on that or get the kit to fix it before it wears through the case. Goodluck with it

Those trucks were known for injectors clogging on the rear fuel line. Just run some injector cleaner through the system. And see will run like new again. All my trucks did this around that mileage. But i decided to buy new and went with a 2014 gmc sierra. Nice truck, seats arent as comfortable as my older trucks. But has alot more features. And its a beast, alot of people hate the newer trucks. And say they arent reliable. But this truck has been at over 90k no problems so far.

Wonder what pending misfire code(s) it has for that. Should be something in the history to tell you. Super nice truck. Maybe get a replacement linkage online, make sure the shifter shaft that comes out of the trans is not rusted allowing stuff to fall off/bind up?
you did well for a salted truck, good job. Most people don't want an 8 ft bed.
There is a bracket you can buy that helps pull the manifold closer to the block. Uses other holes in the block casting. Common to see on 5.3s. Maybe buy that (if available) so you don't have to deal with the rusty disaster of touching those manifold bolts.
I have a 85 K10 with 75,000 original miles. I’m building it up but I bought a 2005 Chevy Silverado 1 ton 4 wheel drive brand new. I still own the truck. It has 220,000 plus miles and it runs as good as it did the day I bought it. Love that truck.
That is a pretty nice truck for that price! It's very hard to find 2500's for fair prices, especially an 8 ft bed, ext cab, at least where i'm at. (PA).

I have a little 2000 camry that was my daily driver before I got my truck. When I saw your service engine light blinking at high speeds I had a PTSD moment. Lol the little camry did that on the interstate on the way home one time with misfires like crazy and it ran really rough. Ended up being the timing belt.
My Blazer has the same shift linkage (I think it's a 4l60e) those linkages are kinda funky. 40 miles into the rebuilt transmission, the linkage came apart when I shifted it into park. Reattached it and no problems that was 5 years ago. It's kinda scary when you suddenly loose control of the shifter through xD

You should find some used 2003-2007 Chevrolet Silverado taillights on it, along with towing mirrors, black headlights, a custom 3rd break light, & possibly some bigger rims with a meaner look on it
I had the same problem with my transmission linkage, I just took the bracket off on the transmission side and drilled out that little knob. Then I took a small bolt and a lock nut and bolted it onto the chain eye loop. Zip ties werent working for me either.

We have a 2004 Suburban 2500HD with the 6.0 at 295k on the odometer. Bought it with 260k and have had no issues with the engine or trans besides a major exhaust leak and the 4x4 sometimes doesnt come out when it goes in. Other then that zero issues no misfires no check engine lights etc. These will run over 400k if taken care of.
The early 6.0 intake gaskets went bad causing a lean code.other than that o2 sensors.i like this year of silverados
Could be the lambda sensor? over heating from the exhaust leak. That is one nice truck inner and exterior good little bit of engine work, 2 outer 3 is a winner. Maybe swop a coil around to see if the missfire follows.

I have a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500HD Extended Cab with 75K Miles and it’s amazing I bought it off my dad he got it with 24 miles back in 05.
Personally, I would love to own a duramax from the 1999 to 2002 years, but the lb7 sucks. Keep up the good work, it won't be long til 50k!

Minus the lb7 injectors, lb7 is a awesome engine, that still has its place today. Easily tuned. Can make a lot of hp.
Gunner Detra mine had the injectors replaced by the previous owner at around 120k mikes according to the service records. No problems since. I did have an ecu issue around 250k miles. I forget the cel code, but it was related to low fuel pressure. Research indicates that Its unique to 01 models like mine. It puts the engine into limp mode. I had Kennedy diesel reprogram my ecu. IIRC it opens the “window” into what is an acceptable fuel pressure range. I really should invest in a left pump, but the truck isnt my “money maker” or even a daily driver. Its just my tow vehicle when i buy new hunk to work on. (Old Farmall tractors and chevy pickups.) i do have an adapter to run a caterpillar style fuel filter. IIRC i once read that Isuzu designed the lb7 to have a lift pump but gm decided to save a few bucks by eliminating it.

a random multiple cylinder misfire do a crankshaft position relearn with a scan tool. Mine used to to the same thing after the engine was replaced

Jack Winand yea my 4l60 is close to death I think, slips like crazy and I think it’s making a grinding noise when I hit a bump but it might be something else so don’t quote me on that yet
If its misfiring on random cyls, it probably just needs a crankshaft position sensor relearn procedure done. Very common problem in these.

1 owner, black on black 2001 1500HD crew cab 6.5 long bed, 6.0 LQ4/4L80E 4x4, GT4 3:73 G80 posi rear with 150K miles for $1700, YES NO BS $1700 !!. Loaded !! Mine has the middle console and came with new bridgestone dueler LT tires !! curb street Dealer thought engine and front diff were shot or maybe i made him think that ?? :D HEHE. But turned out to be a bad belt Tensioner and front wheel hubs cost me around $150 total on Amazon LMFAO. Was offered $7K for her when I drove 1000 miles to Chicago and she was flashing her "Rust free skirts" lol and I said NO THANKS. Aside from basic stuff like Serp belt, fluids flushed, shocks, radiator, Brake pads, Fuel pump. she's been a good rig for my business lol I get 20 MPG's if I keep her at 70 MPH or less lol

I bought a 2004 chevy Silverado 1500 that had 256,000 miles however it had a brand new transmission with only 6,000 miles on it. I only bought it for $4,500 and it is a really clean and reliable truck however it has a problem that most older chevys have and it is the rockers and they just got eaten away this last winter by the salt but everything else seems really reliable. And a little tip for chevy owners is to buy rubber flex and coat the rockers with 2 coats I did this to my moms jeep liberty and it really held up to the Minnesota salt however I did not do this to my truck and payed for it.
