Johnny the the country boy yeah they have a really good reputation around here I’ve seen some with over 300k. My grandmother bought hers new in 05 and it’s never skipped a beat just belts and fluids 👍
I've known several people who really liked their Vibes. I would definitely try O2 sensors before replacing the cat. Plus just giving it a general tune up which can help with the emissions code as well. Could also be an exhaust leak somewhere. I would also clear all the codes and see if the crankshaft position sensor and knock sensor codes even come back, as they could have been from misfire events or some such. I think you will be able to get it sorted out cheap in the end! Good deal.
Hey, my 04 has 156,000. Thought about joint the 200,000 mileclub, but wonder if it will be worth putting bucks into future repairs that may hit all at once. Presently, no issues. Any tips on what to have a mechanic look at as preventive maintenance? Or, what to even replace before it goes out due to being at 156,000. Shocks, struts, tranny, engine look ok. No clue about water pump etc. Thanxs!
I bought a 1 owner 06 Vibe 3 yrs ago. Love love love it. Even if you put another $800 in its still a sweet deal. I'd take it all day long. May want to check for vacuum leaks. Intake manifold leak is pretty common but cheap and easy to fix. Car is super easy to work on for the most part.
Good choice on the vibe. My wife has one for a daily driver. It was our primary vehicle while we were in college. We road tripped all over Iowa in that thing and it’s still going strong at 250,000 miles. Some minor things have come up (rusted exhaust, stuck locks, etc.) but engine has only ever had a new battery and oil changes. Same inefficient cat code on hers, but no state inspection in Iowa so haven’t even bothered to fix it.
Very nice of you , you're a great person , I enjoy your videos , passion for cars , and willingness to help your family . By the way, vehicles don't rust much here in Tennessee, just saying !! Keep up the good work 💪
Vibe/Matrix = Corolla with the same expected reliability. Great buy. Anything sub-$1000 running/driving is a great buy. Not knowing Toyotas, my bet is that it's running rich for some reason hence the catalyst code.
I bought an '03 Vibe in '08 and it's still going strong in '22. The only major repairs in 14 yrs, new alternator and starter. I've also recently had the front suspension replaced because 10+ yrs on a dirt road takes it's toll. I love my Vibe!
Thank you for the Vibe video.. I really think they are great cars, meaning that they have good reliability and are dependable vehicles.. I love the Pontiac badges on my Toyota.. Pontiac sad to say is not around but I have a matrix with GTO heritage 😁
Yep, those are good cars. I've had an 04 Matrix w 1.8 5 speed for the last 6 years. Minimal maintenance, uses a little oil but still starts and runs like new. Hard to believe you got yours for $800. Mine also had the 420 code when I bought it. Toyotas and some other cars have sensitive 02 readers, and like people here recommend, I put the extender between the cat and the sensor. 6 years and 60,000+ miles later the light stays off. It's a good idea to change the PVC valve too- less than $10, helps stop oil usage in older cars.
Love your videos 😁 the scenic drive was really nice!! I'm looking for one of those Matrix's/vibe so that's how I stumbled across this!! Wish I could fins one for $600
Oh ok I just bought a 04 Vibe it has 273,000 got it for 1200 to, how many miles you put on your vibe Monthly? I asked cuz I'm going to use to mines for food deliveries
Awesome deal! I have 2 Vibes of which are both automatics. I'd rather have the manual shift for the reliability factor (though yours has been replaced. That tells me someone liked getting into it hard all the time, or did a lot of grinding. lol), also sadly the Vibe and Matrix do not share the same automatic trans, so I don't know how they hold up yet. Still they provide a good solid ride.
Hey how are you doing tonight, I’m from Strafford county in NH, just started watching your videos when you posted the dodge Dakota. Your videos are amazingly detailed and it helped me out a lot with fixing my 07 dodge Dakota. I hope to meet you one day. From Anthony
There’s no way he spent 3k on the transmission and clutch. I had a vybe for quite a few years and drove it up to 400k miles and when I replaced the transmission and clutch, it only cost me 1200. It could be because my mechanic is a friend of mine so he gave me a discount on labor but paying nearly 2k extra for labor seems suspicious. Edit: both the transmission and clutch were brand new as well
if it came with a warranty at the time 3k makes sense in my opinion, given im canadian and $4000 is reasonable here so i dont know if labour is just exchange in diffrence in price or not but $90-$110 an hour for labour is common here
The P0420 is the aftercat 02. If a new one still lights the code get a “mil eliminator” kit that extends it out of the exhaust stream. Get a GM sensor the Amazon ones are crap
Dead is a relative term with catalytic converters. A MIL eliminator will still sniff it enough to set the code if the cat was replaced with a “test pipe”. Chances are the cat still sorta works or the exhaust would smell like a 1970 car’s. You might run some cleaner in the gas tank. An aftermarket cat is not extremely expensive now but if the engine burns a little oil you’re pissin in the wind
That is a great buy! I have had my 2000 corolla for 7 years which has the same 1zz fe thats in this car. Only thing is make sure you check the oil very frequently! Most of these engines burn oil do to improper matinence. My 20 year old still burns no oil because I have always changed it.
The 05-08 1zz-fe is supposed to have a modified piston design that solves the oil consumption issue. I have 604,000km on my 07 and it burns 0.5L over the 10,000km oil change interval. I run synthetic oil.

@@hakeemfb3 correct. Most people just make little tally marks on their dashboards or keep records in their phones of the mileage. The Trip odometer continues working after the odometer maxes out. There is a FaceBook group called GenVibe, you should join! It is full of people giving advice on keeping these cars on the road.
There's a additive u can put in the gas tank it's called B12 u can find it at O'Reilly's or AutoZone it'll clears out the cat, and clean the O2 sensor if it's just dirty and not bad and ive used it injunction with Seafoam through a vacuum line into the intake and you will pass the emissions test!!! The place I took my Toyota Corolla to for the emissions test gave me the advice!!!
Good car I didn't want one at first but I'm glad I have it. I got very attached because it's so easy to maintain and they run forever. My favorite part is when I get to do the transmission fluid it has a drain plug. I almost got 300000 MI
Our version of that car in the UK is the Toyota Corolla Verso and they're a great, reliable car, even with those miles (considered high in the UK) I'd have bought that car for the price you paid, looks straight and solid with plenty of life left in it. 🤞🏻 the cat's not worn out.
If you have a knock sensor error, you may have rodent damage to the wiring (on the backside of the engine). I tried everything but what worked best was enclosing that wiring in a wire loom from our local got-everything hardware store. We were told that the wiring is made with rubber that contains soybean oil (how very green of them) and rodents love to chew on it.
There is a TSB for the Matrix for fuel mix LEAN when temperatures are below 0C/32F due to a leaking intake manifold gasket. Super easy to change, and it is less than $15 from the dealer. Aftermarket was actually more expensive in my area, and the one from the dealer is of a different design. I bought the gasket at the Toyota dealer for my Vibe. I wonder if that is contributing to the p0420 code on yours.
Those codes are the O2 sensor, the crankshaft and camshaft sensors sometimes come on if the battery is not healthy anymore. Oh you forgot to show your sister hahha. Take care.
Replace the crank position sensor, clear the codes, and see if more than one goes away. Take it to a shop like Car-X and you can get a converter installed cheap.
Try putting sea foam in the cat unbolt one of the o2 centers and pour it in the cat then let it sit for a minute and then let it run and drive it around(this worked on my car 2001 Toyota RAV4)
over here in the uk there are some sprays you can buy that do a good job, also there are small garages who use machines and they put chemicals through the air intake to clean the carbon and other rubbish out of the system dont know if you got anything like that where you are but keep the good vids up
I'd pick up a cheap post cat oxygen sensor, then put a spacer on it Since it's a Toyota at heart, try to lean towards a NTK or Denso sensor, make sure you don't mix up an AFR sensor vs Oxygen, there IS a VERY big difference on how they operate Just search o2 sensor spacer on Amazon Unless the cat is COMPLETELY trashed, this should get it through a drive cycle and pass the catalyst efficiency monitor
Honestly the most underrated budget car in the 2000s. I orginally had an 04 matrix xrs 6spd with 112,000kms. Got it for a steal and sold it a few years later for a nice profit with 140,000kms. in 2020 i replaced my winter beater 96 paseo with an 06 vibe 5spd that i paid $550 for with 220,000kms. Currently at 280,000kms and the only maintence ive had to do was sway bar end links, rotors pads and i decided to get new calipers instead of rebuilding the original rusty ones. Still have less in the car then i paid in tax at our service center ( taxed on a $4000 value).
Just got a 2004 Vibe as my first car, base automatic without ABS and TCS, but has alloys, upgraded sound system and a moonroof. Fantastic cars, and a wonderful community! They ride a little tough but they handle nice and the 1ZZ is an awesome little 4-cylinder even with just 130 horsepower. Give it oil changes and don’t wreck it and it’ll last forever.
Great video. I'm a subscriber, keep up the good work! Curious why you don't bring the code scanner with you when you check out a car for the first time? Instead of buying first, scanning later.
The camshaft sensor may clear all your codes. Or the vvt solenoid, which my not throw a code. If oil changes are not done regularly, bad oil will gum Up the screens on the vvt solenoid. Just look up CZcams videos on it, I’m sure you already have haha. On a side note, I can’t believe the amount of rust y’all have to deal with up north. Here in Florida there is none. We unless you let a car sit for months beachside. Good luck man always love your videos, and your segway music!

@@thewindowisrusty so once the odometer officially stops what happens it the meter won't continue to go up No more? I'm still learning about high mileage cars since mines is currently at 273,365 it needs some TLC Ac fixed on it
@@hakeemfb3 correct. Most people just make little tally marks on their dashboards or keep records in their phones of the mileage. The Trip odometer continues working after the odometer maxes out. There is a FaceBook group called GenVibe, you should join! It is full of people giving advice on keeping these cars on the road.
I miss my Pontiac Vibe 😭, I have a Kia Soul that reminds me of it.
You're a good brother!
Nice bro, setting sis up with a reliable car
Great car. I have an 05 matrix.
Great video! My parents had one of those but a 2009 was a very reliable car never had a problem.
It's going to be a reliable choice because it's basically a Toyota with Pontiac badges.
@@johndeerefan725 not basically it is a Toyota matrix rebadged as a Pontiac vibe
Good car I didn't want one at first but I'm glad I have it. I got very attached because it's so easy to maintain and they run forever. My favorite part is when I get to do the transmission fluid it has a drain plug. I almost got 300000 MI
Yess, new video!
Try spark plug spacer for the catalytic converter codes worked on my Camry and it passed emissions with a bad catalytic converter
Toyotas are great cars I have an 06 Prius with 360k miles
Our version of that car in the UK is the Toyota Corolla Verso and they're a great, reliable car, even with those miles (considered high in the UK) I'd have bought that car for the price you paid, looks straight and solid with plenty of life left in it. 🤞🏻 the cat's not worn out.
This is for your sister? You are a good guy.
We want to see your sister!
Haha maybe a reaction video of her getting the car
Yes we want to all see her ... hehe 😉
Nice Toyota matrix 😁
Take care.
Thanks for the video on my birthday
Replace the crank position sensor, clear the codes, and see if more than one goes away. Take it to a shop like Car-X and you can get a converter installed cheap.
Check the Neutral position sensor switch first and see if it is functioning properly. Sometimes a shim in there will solve a problem.
Try putting sea foam in the cat unbolt one of the o2 centers and pour it in the cat then let it sit for a minute and then let it run and drive it around(this worked on my car 2001 Toyota RAV4)
over here in the uk there are some sprays you can buy that do a good job, also there are small garages who use machines and they put chemicals through the air intake to clean the carbon and other rubbish out of the system dont know if you got anything like that where you are but keep the good vids up
Damn you know she gonna be vibing 😳
I'd pick up a cheap post cat oxygen sensor, then put a spacer on it
Since it's a Toyota at heart, try to lean towards a NTK or Denso sensor, make sure you don't mix up an AFR sensor vs Oxygen, there IS a VERY big difference on how they operate
Just search o2 sensor spacer on Amazon
Unless the cat is COMPLETELY trashed, this should get it through a drive cycle and pass the catalyst efficiency monitor
I would have bought that to great deal!! Better give a decent detail for ur sister power wash it underneath for sure haha
Even with the extra codes, thats a bargain.
Nice hunting.
My vibe lasted to 225k. Great little car, easy to work on and good on gas
My sons girlfriend has same car. 275k miles. Her mom was 1st owner. Only oil and tire changes. Im amazed everytime i see it start. Lolol
Get an O2 sensor space on eBay $10 before you replace the cat.
Wonderful community? What does that mean. is there a secret wave like the bike riders do?
@Thomas Allen the people that drive them are typically really friendly and love their cars, often really knowledgable abt em too
Great video.
Thanks!
