In this quick (beefy) tutorial, I'm going to give you a quick jumpstart into Duik Bassel. I'll show you the basics of the new structures system, auto-rigging, and automating a walk cycle. We'll use three different character styles and easily switch between each of them.
As always, let me know if you have any questions or requests!

R.I.P Bassel Safadi (1981- 2015)
Thanks Rainbox for this Tribute
Tnx for sharing that info I did not know who he was. RIP.
Really ? he is dead ??
M Faiz Faufan he got executed in Syria back in 2015
What a fuck!!! I didn´t know Bassel was murdered in Siria because he was oppositor against dictator Bashar al-Ásad.
His actual name is Bassel khartabil and al safadi or safadi is a surname because his origin city in Palestine. He was detained in syria in 2012 and executed in 2015.
Man!! you're amazing explaining this!
This is insanely helpful! Been using the old version of Duik for a while for my animations and really wanted to get into the new version. Super excited to get my new characters rigged up like this!
I'm extremely excited about this release and thanks Jake for putting this together and recommending users support Rainbox. Keep at it Jake.
I've been on CZcams for years. I don't comment regularly.
However, this was the most insightful, and clear tutorials I have ever watched.
Thank you my friend.
Once I have all this in practice you will be mentioned as my best learning guide.
Seriously, thank you for taking your time.
Time is valuable and you broke it down seamlessly.
He deserves it!
im gonna pass my 2D animation exam tomorrow ...thanks to you ...best duik rig tutorial !
I been finding so many tutorials, but the ones I really liked had different versions of DUIK I couldn’t figure out. Thank you so much for this video, it has helped me a ton!
That is sooo useful, thanks Jake. These new features are incredible and so is the Duik team.
Said "Wow" out loud when you hit the walk cycle! Great tutorial on some brilliant software 👏 Really good idea about adding a hidden "DUIK fee" into invoices to support the makers - will be introducing that.
how did get those blue and yellow dots on your character? and are they essential in order to rig?
@@Pride-zl2ew I had the same doubt, they are just for reference to correctly center the rig in the joints, if not centered correctly the rig might get distorted at the joints.
I've always wanted to learn how to make my art come to life. This is mindblowing. Thank you for this informative video.
how did get those blue and yellow dots on your character? and are they essential in order to rig?
Thanks Jake, I'm so impressed by the new DUIK, and your quick video helped me quickly rig up a character for a client after opening it and being lost.
I agree, Duik and SOM rock! I've been itching to check out the update since they posted it. Thanks for this, and your other great tutorials.!
Teaching myself character animation during lockdown... this is by far the best Duik tutorial I've come across so far. You're an excellent teacher Jake. The lesson just flows like a smooth walk cycle :D Congrats mate!
Watch nijat Ibrahim's duik bassel tutorials, then You'll understand what best means😊
This is MIND BLOWING! I was literarily laughing and clapping when the bounce walk came. The most difficult kind of walk cycle to make. Thank you so much for explaining these. I was looking for something else when i found this but I have made a retour. Have to get back into using AE again!!.. and I subbed. You are a natural teacher
Also Jake, you are so right about putting a DUIK fee into projects. It is an ethical practice that should be supoported. We should not take these things for granted. Thanks for that reminder too.
Jake, you created the best tutorial yet on this topic. Thank you so much for this.
This video is AMAZING, a lifesaver truly. And I love the way you're explaining everything with so much enthusiasm, really engaging!
16:45, genuinely mind blowing
how did get those blue and yellow dots on your character? and are they essential in order to rig?
I wasted half a day understanding the doc of duik bazzel. Thanks a LOT Jake !!! Thanks duik too for generous opensource contribution to animators.
Go thanks Duduf (duik's creator) on his patreon page ;)
Warren Meurisse sure bud. :)
That was one of the most fantastic & Mind-blowing (literally) tutorials for After effects that I have ever seen... xD
My god that walk cycle is insane. Like actually mind blowing how it can just do that.
sometimes at nights i wonder, who goes on and 'dislike' such an informative piece of tutorial. thanks Jake.
how did he get those blue and yellow dots on your character? and are they essential in order to rig?
This is nuts
Duik (R.I.P - Bassel) is a very complex script and really hard to understand without any knowledge of 3d rigging systems. In your tutorial actually you introduced people to basic rigging system which is a little bit different than the usual 3d rigging system. Thats perfect! As you said in the tutorial ''that was just a basic introduction to Duik'' but now we are really looking for the other features like face expressions, complex rigging systems, animal skeleton or may be more fantastic ideas that you can show us :) Really appreciate the tutorial and your clear narrator way. Thanks a lot.
That was such a great tutorial, thank you! I followed everything. Very clear directions. (The sped up sections were helpful to reference, glad they weren't cut). That walk cycle is so much fun to play with! The possible exaggerations are incredible. And, what a great piece of software. Got to give it up for open source projects yet again.
Edit: Only tiny hurdle I had was finding the Zeros button. But that's resolved in my version (16.2.24) by switching the interface from "Rookie" to "Standard" in the options.
Aw geez we can't tell anyone there's now literally one button you press to have the computer make the animation for you, we'll never hear the end of it from relatives, clients, etc
They never have to know! 🤣
My thoughts exactly. I'm like that with Animation Composer. Don't let ANYONE know you use it ;)....oops, I just told everyone :P
🤣🤣🤫
😝
Aww geez Rick, we don't have to tell them do we? I mean aww jeez!
Jake In Motion :-awesome bro
how did he get those blue and yellow dots on your character? and are they essential in order to rig?
This is fantastic Jake Thanks a ton for putting this I was struggling with DUIK BASSEL you are amazing and Thanks to Duduf Nicolus and team the Genius guys for creating this
I Cannot thank you enough. I came from a 3d base and i use to hate rigging (i´m an animator) but as a freelancer I have to make it, and now i´m working with 2d and this was a life saving video.
Thanks so much for this tutorial! Quick question. Say I've created a Hominoid structure, but I want to remove one of the spines. What's the quickest way of doing this?
Click the little circle next to the spine structures button before creating an entire hominoid. You can set the number of spine segments there first, then create the hominoid. That should do it!
Jake In Motion Oh nice! Thanks so much for the quick reply!
please create a tutorial on how to make complete custom rig. like 360 head rotate and stuff , if you can :)
Thanks for these tutorials
Love it, these guys are so good! Thanks for this intro, Jake. Awesome as always :)
Congrats from Brazil. I'm graphic designer and this is my first time in animation. Your tutorial helped me a lot!
I love it, but I use Ae 2017, so I can not swap the layer. What a pity
Do you mean the artwork? Are you sure? I've been able to swap layers within Duik since CS6.
hey a question, how do you start animating your controllers once your walk-cycle isn't in use? do you need to swap to a duplicate character that isn't automated?
I would like to know this also, because everything can be animated when in walkcycle mode eccept for the hands
Just found out the solution, just klick on the Handle, then you can toggle the IK handle on with a hold frame. after that you can animate the arm again.
Everything should remain animatable during the walk and once you've stoped it. To animate the hands, use the above tip.
Jake In Motion thanks, figured it out :) the IK was disabled as a default :)
Maaan... I've watched some of your tutorials and this has been the best. Thanks a lot. You earned my subscription. Thanks once again.
Best tutorial on youtube for Duik Bassel. I loved your explaination style. Thank you Jake
When i ''0'' out the position like in 9:17. My skeleton moves away.
I come back here everytime I need a character rigged this way...I keep forgetting how it works haha I'm stupid.
Me too, every time :D
how did get those blue and yellow dots on your character? and are they essential in order to rig?
@@Pride-zl2ew Hello Kytin, I think they're just references for rotation points. Notice how they're all placed at joints (the shoulder, elbow, wrist, etc.). I rig my characters without dots like those, so no, they shouldn't be necessary for rigging. Hope this helps :).
Edit: Around 8:44 he explains that the dots are just guides.
@@Veranze oh my goodness yes it does!!! but could you help me out like do you have an email or something i can contact you with because i am actually trying to figure out rigging as well and i could just the help of an expert!
@@Pride-zl2ew Hmm well I'm no expert, I'm still in the process of learning myself. I may be able to help though, if you want just send me messages at salvarezralph@gmail.com.
Dude, this was awesome! I really worked through that entire tutorial with immense focus - thank you for providing this! :)
Thank you so much, I am a college freshman working on a huge solo project for fun and this just blew my mind!
what about a custom shape???
how did get those blue and yellow dots on your character? and are they essential in order to rig?
I don't have the ''Add zero'' Button!!! please help
This is the best explaine Duik 2 I ever seen. I sear something like this too long. And almost failed with deadline of project.
But its done with your help! Thank you sooooo match!
You've no idea how this tutorial really saves me a lot of time in my project. You're really the best man!
how did he get those blue and yellow dots on your character? and are they essential in order to rig?
Whenever I try to change the X positions of the parented items to ZERO they automatically shoot to the side of the screen. What am I doing wrong? See 9:05
That sounds like something wasn't parented properly. Make sure you parented the layers in the correct order: closest part to the body > furthest from the body.
@@JakeInMotion I followed this step by step and this x position issue happened to me just as Jared Hutchinson described. What do you mean by "parented the layers properly"? The program made the parents automatically. And I adjusted them/lined them up in the exact order you did?
The only reason I can think of for the layers moving to the far side of the screen are layers not properly parented. I realize duik automatically parents the structures when it generates them, but something must have messed up the parenting structure. Are you sure you're trying to zero out the structure layers and not the artwork layers?
Mine did the same, I figured out what I was doing wrong. Don't change the position "Arm" and "Arm 2" layers. Just the "Arm Tip", "Hand" and "Forearm" layers. I hope this help!
Go to Transform--Position--Right click--Edit value--Make it Zero
Back in 2018 i watched the video and didn't understand Anything. After 3 years i watched the full video and it blew my mind away.
What?! My mind is blown! What an incredible plugin.
Thanks Jake!!!! I've used Duik many times but Duik Bassel is new to me and I needed your expertise. again, thanks!
Wow, this new version of Duik looks mindblowing! Tutorial was great, you just earned a subscriber :) Good work!
Fantastic and thorough tutorial! appreciate you walking us through it (heh). One thing I never messed with was zeroing controllers, it was kind of intimidating to me with all the hidden/locked layers involved but now I see how useful they can be! One thing I hope they add to the walk cycle automation (which is insane btw) is the ability to bake your cycle into looped keyframes. That would be a very powerful starting point for custom walks. Thanks again man will definitely be checking out more of your content.
Don't know what to say, this is very useful for my school project. Thank you for sharing this for free
That IS mind-blowing to anyone who knows what you are talking about. No hyperbole. Kind of aggravating to imagine someone just starting out with such a monster available and complaining about having to slog through the prerequisite steps.
Thanks a lot - That is an amazing video - tight and clear ! You're one of the best e-teacher around! And thanks also for reminding people to not forget the creators of the tools! (credits -money - etc...)
Thank you for this. After a row of duik bassel tutorials, this one really made it clear for me. Nice art as well.
it is really mind-blowing to make a character walk cycle with only one button. The first time you did it I laugh at a lot. Thank you duik bassel producers and Jake, god blase you all :)
Thank you so much for this overview! I knew this update would be powerful but I really struggled getting it to work so this really, really helped out! Thank you, Thank you!!
Thank you for this tutorial, it is the most useful thing for me when I don't use DUIK for some time and I forget how it works.
I really like your videos, you always deliver beyond expectation and that is a huge value to me :) keep up the great work
Great tutorial dude. Clear, no filler crap and interesting. Thanks.
Whoa!!! This is not only an awesome plugin, but great explanation !
Gamechanger! Thanks for putting this together, Jake!
Thank you Jake, one of the better tutorials I've come across! You're awesome.
when you clicked on that walk cycle man... mind blown! thanks for this crash course, really helpful!
Great tutorial, thanks man! Can't wait ta check out your other vids.
Extra credit fer encouraging the support of the Duik creators; great idea of incorporating it into invoices!
This kind of tutorial is worth to finish till the last sec if the video without skipping, very informative and clear, gonna try AE now after learning Ch. Thanks, Jake hopes to see more videos like this.
Your opening animation is perfection.
Oh boy, my computer is sweating when previewing the walk cycle changes! Good video :)
so long watch and no try about this plugin and i don't know how amazing this plugin....THANKS SO MUUUUCH BROOO!!!!
Wow! Great job man. I was mindblown by this. This makes me more excited to learn character animation
The auto walk cycle blew my mind!
I've been looking for this for so long, thanks man
I am so hyped! Your channel is the best on the CZcams. You rock man! I just starting with the animation. I am vector illustrator and finally can see the possibilities in the After Effects. I was struggling with getting the clients for illustrations. But with the animation skills my graphic design stuff will blow their minds. Dev is the first person convinced me to be an Patron :) Keep up a great work :) I realised that you dont have an patreon (yet?)
Hello Jake. Your tutorial is the best on duik Basel I've seen so far. Thanks a lot, please do consider doing more videos on duik, there's so much I desire to learn, lip sync, eye blink etc
wow duik has changed a lot, this is amazing
This is an extremely detailed tutorial video! Thank you for making this!
omggggg this new walk cycle feature has me GOOPED
Amazing tutorial man. Really. This is exactly what a tutorial must be

hey, jake .... cheers brother. Iam so much excited for a new one... haven't seen yet... can't wait to go through it.
Very clear and informative vid - subscribed for more! I'd been looking forward to finishing my holiday to try Bassel on my return, hah!
You're amazing! Thank you for all your tutorials!
Wow! Fantastic tutorial. I spent 4 hour for make a walk cycle and now with one click make a animation
Very helpful, and surprisingly therapeutic
WOW, This is just so awesome! Thank you for sharing with us!
This script... Duduf is a god ! Merci pour cette vidéo ! Crystal clear !
The only thing that is confusing to me is how the hell do you only have 300k views? this is an amazing video that promises and delivers; i feel this was a perfect jumpstart on how to use DUIK (and I'm not even rigging a human character). thank you so much! subscribed!
Kudos man you nailed it. I really learnt quickly the methods of rigging in Ae using duik 16. I was using v15.11 but v16 is amazing.
You have saved hours of my life with this video. Thank you!!!
I like that you don't waste time here. I always end up skipping through tutorials when they go too slow. But you're giving good info most of the time here. So I just skipped the part were you play with the walk cycle controllers (which is useful anyway, Just not what I needed)
thank you
Your videos are incredible! Getting me eager to learn more about After Effects for my job!
wow that was incredible!!!! Such a great tutorial, keep it up man!
you are saving my days, thank you so much for this amazing tutorial
thanks a lot jake! This one was terrific, so comprehensive and clear.
This is such an excellent tut, why did those ten people downvote it? Thank you for sharing this with the community.
