Watch my Skillshare course on rigging with Duik Bassel: skl.sh/2U4OYdA
In this video, I'll show you my process for designing a character in Adobe Illustrator for rigging in Adobe After Effects using Duik Bassel. We'll talk about how I plan out my character design, build the character with rigging in mind, and use Duik to rig and add an automatic walk cycle to the rig.

This is actually a godsend. I'm trying to learn design and character design because I'm not an illustrator (only animator) so this video is on point. Great video Jake. Thank you!
always a pleasure to see your workflows and explanations Jake, you're a true fountain of knowledge ahah
keep up the great work!
Thanks for this video, Jake! This helped me a lot. Hoping to get ready for some coursework on designing and rigging characters this year. Took me many times but, it finally clicked! Also still getting my head around how to apply everything from ABC and your PS and IL Unleashed course. Thanks so much!!!
wow! you're back on your channel! Thanks for Video Tutorials Jake
Really nice breakthrough the process. Quite interesting and very helpful.
This is so cool, thank you! I just can't stop wodering what an amazing teacher you're, Jake! :)
Really loves your tutorials
Jake, thank you so much. It’s really helpful tutorials
Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial!! You are great.
You’re always a life saver ❤️
Thank you for sharing loving your content and thumbnail :D Eagle is the tool I've been looking for amazed by how it can do especially their powerful filter I'm SOLD!!!!
Awesome thanks this was really informative!
the thumbnail has been haunting my rec list, I get that people click on that more for some reason but it's pretty terrifying imagery
Thanks for a useful tutorial! 😊
Loved it. You are the best.
really learned a lot from you!
You talked about artboard size for full body character and how big it should be, what about other assets other than characters, is it better to design all elements in one document or each and every element in different documents? Thanks!
Good tutorial,I learned from here.
Character design is overwhelming but you made it look easy
Your each tutorial has helped me and my team to polish our AE skills. Thanks Jake! Keep these videos coming.
I love eagle. It s like my own personal pinterest without the fluff
Much needed video thnx
Thanks so much Jake, your tutorials are simply priceless, please I'm curious. How do you rigg with duik, illustrator character and retain resolution when you zoom in?
You can't; that's why you have to work at such a high resolution when designing and rigging.
thank you jake
Eagle pp is great yeah!!! Jake become a legend and show us how to make a character turn or how to do those fake 3D things in a rigging context
If you do that I'll love you forever 😊
very nice tutorial!
what is the best way to turn a character from fron view to side view? i can find any thing on it lol
To keep the circles at the same position:
Ctrl + C = copy
click into the layer "Joint Markers"
Ctrl + F = copies the circles and pastes them into the layer "Joint markers" while keeping the original position
It was the first case when advertising has been soooooooo helpful for me :) Because searched powerful moodboard (better, than MS Moodboard) by years and has no result till this video. Wow! :)
Also thnx for sharing of your workflow!
Thank you for your video I have just started learning After Effects I am ok with Adobe Photoshop Looking forward to watch your next video on rigging the Character s thanks Doug Greene
Thank you
you make useful video, thank youu :))
perfect
Hello Jake,
Thank you very much for your useful tutorial. Do you have any longer courses to design characters? For example on Skillshare or School of Motion.
I have a course on Skillshare that covers this process in more depth, but nothing specifically for designing characters. Though there are many classes on Skillshare on that topic.
@@JakeInMotion Thank you for your reply
how is this wrist control done? the hand rotation? If it comes automatically. then i dont know exactly what i'm missing. Pls help
I make your thumbnail face whenever I see you've released a new video.
Hence proved that Jake is an alien.
Can you please make a complete tutorial on how to animate illustration using DUIK?
Check out my Skillshare class!
when you timelapse through the design proces… and you add extras say to the arm ; like the shirt sleeve and linework you put that on the arm layer right? And how do you export that to AE? Sorry is the question will be answered in the last 10 minutes of the video
Yes, any details go in the layers they belong to. Everything is imported to AE as illustrator art and not converted to shape layers, so the layers are essentially still images.
jake great
Nice video.
I have a question. I am ok with AI and AE and I am looking for jobs in motion graphics. What should I learn to do in Photoshop in order to aim for these jobs?
My guess is that healing brush mastery on pictures of supermodels is not the way to go, still there are skills in PS that I MUST HAVE.
I actually have an entire course at School of Motion called Photoshop and Illustrator Unleashed that teaches exactly what you're looking for.
@@JakeInMotion Hey tnx, I will try it once I get my next paycheck. In the meantime what do you recommend using my time to practice in PS?
The enlarged eyes in the thumbnail look a bit creepy :D
But great tutorial!
Got your attention though?
@@JakeInMotion yeah! but would prefer just a normal face :D
I like the lighting effect, maybe you can experiment with that more? :)
at 19:28 you fix the disproportionate knee joint. I cannot get this to work. Shift, click, drag...always creates a non-uniform circle. Any ideas? It's making me a little nuts.
Eagle looks so cool but no iPad app?
20:21 we always save our projects :)
Nice
Just use Moho?
You can demonstrate effectively with less talk !
Wow :o
💖💖
Man, I wish Eagle was cloud based so I could easily share & collaborate.
hello
Im such an idiot...I clicked to close the "colors" panel and the video paused and I legit got confused for a few seconds...
gret video tho!
Nice thumbnail bro 😅
Dude, did you photoshop your face in the thumbnail lmaooo
No, why do you ask?
