But with all the tour dates being so close together on this Christmas tour, I can understand why he didn't go all the way up during those performances. He still sounded great.

There's actually 2 layers to the song, one for the background vocals and the other for the lead vocals. If you listen to the chorus, it's audibly obvious that there's 2 layers, so the background vocals were being played while they were singing the lead vocals. Hope this helps!
