    Well well well, there's been a lot of talk about this game and its fashion lately so as the self-proclaimed nr 1 fighting game fashion reviewer on CZcams, I decided to delve deeper to find out if this game truly is dripless or not.

    Dope vid. If I recall correctly Arcueid being out of style is one of her character traits. Her old outfit from Tsukihime (2000) was out of style then too. It's almost like she's just catching up to the fashion of the original game's time lol.

      It’s part of her character
      As an ancient vampire princess she is usually sleeping and she was behind the times when she arrived into town
      I feel like her old granny dress fit her jovial nature better since she actually doesn’t care at all about fashion whatsoever.

      @@agaed7676 great comment, I agree with everything you just said except that red Arcueid's dress would fit normal Arcueid better since normal Arcueid actually enjoyed looking good, in the remake she makes creates a form resistant against ice and fire and makes it be a dress specifically because she wanted to look pretty, she is just too out of touch and doesn't care enough to be up to date
      red Arcueid on the other hand just couldn't care less, she will use her granny dress other people liking it or not

    Melty blood is originally based off a visual novel called tsukihime
    In the series they all look like normal people but they all have secret powers in some way
    The designs are made to be relatively unremarkable because the characters need to fit in to the rest of the world, we then learn more about them through their dialogue ingame
    The genre is: Magic assholes fighting in the streets at night

    Considering Tsukihime's principal of character design, I think you could see Kouma's coat as him concealing his identity as a paid emotionless killer yet he's still being feared by the people around him since the way he wears the coat is kinda like a Yakuza member or something. But hey that's just my interpretation

  • @jalecoarcade
    @jalecoarcade Před 2 lety +27

    Fighting game character designs/outfits are made with the mechanics in mind, i.e virtually all characters wearing sleeveless shirts have coloured gloves or wristbands to draw attention to the part they actually hit you with. Cammy's outfit is once again, a great example. For this reason it's quite unusual for a FTG to have characters wearing black shoes with black pants or socks (as it makes kicks harder to see). I'd guess this is due to some of the characters coming from a visual novel, but also the higher quality animation compared to most air dashers. Also, I don't think it's a coincidence that the characters with the most elaborate outfits (Vlov and Sabre) both attack with long-range weapons, as having their attacks be an external object with hitboxes situated far from the body frees the character design from having to adhere to the same kind of colour theory that say, Street Fighter characters did. I know you're just looking at the outfits on their own, but thought I'd mention it. Anyway, cool video.

      Yeah those are some very good points! I do agree it is a bit "unfair" to compare the Melty chars to other fighting game chars since, as you say, they're not really designed with fighting games in mind.

    I've heard on many occasions that the style of Melty Blood and Tsukihime is meant to conceal the power, intentions, or origins that the characters have by making their outward appearance more plain. Vlov is the exception in this game but I can see this being true given most of the character designs.

    • @Otakitoculiao
      @Otakitoculiao Před 2 lety +9

      That's exactly the case with Tsukihime yeah! One of the main themes about the Visual Novel is how the most horrifying things are just hiding in plain sight

  • @lapis3965
    @lapis3965 Před 2 lety +16

    The original Tsukihime visual novel was wild, and saying it's and adult game is definitely accurate, since in the original game the player had the option to pick between five routes with each girl being the focus of the route, and where those routes go is pretty dark. For instance, I'll never forget the scene where Shiki rapes Arcueid in her route, and it's shown in great detail, this was done by showing Shiki pinning her down and forcefully removing her clothes as he does the deed. Another example, is in a separate route with the player witnessing a similar scenario with Shiki's violent sexual encounter with Kohaku, which resulted in leaving the poor girl in tears. That being said, there is indeed story justification on why our protagonist does what he does, and I'll leave that for people interested in what I just presented to read the VN themselves to see what that justification is, but yeah, definitely not for the faint of heart. Still a very good read IMO, and I can see why so many people call this game a cult classic.

    I think it's important to remember that all of these characters are originally from a visual novel made in 2000. They work really well for that medium but not so much but for a fighting game. I definitely agree that they are pretty safe and some extra details could've been nice for those not familiar with the source material or visual novels as a whole. Feel like changing the designs would've upset fans of the original probably.
    Good content btw, you should make more of these.

    7:22 yeah, tsukihime family charts are complicated with some family drama The Maury Povich Show would kill for lol 😂
    but tl;dr: Shiki was adopted after his biological family of 100% human demon hunters were killed by his soon to be adoptive family of demon hunters (but with demon blood) they killed the 100% human demon hunters because they were afraid they were going to kill the demon hunter with demon blood (since they can kinda go crazy because of the demon blood), they also brainwashed Shiki so he would forget about his last family being killed, he was fine for a bit but then his adoptive brother went crazy because of the demon blood, so they brainwashed him again so he would also forget about that and sent him away to live with his adopted aunts for a few years, that's why his cousin is also his step-sister ( crazy I know :P )

    That nod to kohakus backstory though 🤣 yeah tsukihime goes places.
    As you night have guessed tsukhime is based on a contemporary modern setting where people are largely just normal people as you'd see in the real world. And so they dress to conform to that standard.
    Of course it's not very inreresting as a fighting game design but melty blood being a licensed fighting game spinoff of tsukihime it's kind of inevitable.
    Im glad you put a lot of history and knowledge into your descriptions because I didnt even know certain things. I knew sailor uniforms were based on actual old sailor uniforms but I didn't know the male uniforms were also based on a outfit
    Ironic that you say arcueids (are coo aid broon stud) purple dress looks uglier than her mini skirt as the fans love her purple dress which is her original design and hate her skirt which is supposed to be representative of a more modern version of her

    I believe one of the reasons the characters are so normal, is because Takeuchi (the character designer from the original Tsukihime) was inexperienced and didn't want to make complicated designs, since in a visual novel you have to make a LOT of drawings. The artwork from the original Tsukihime is very amateurish. In this remake they updated the characters designs, but tried to keep the same simplicity they are known for.

    Weirdly she’s one of the few characters that had a outfit change that I noticed at first. Most notably her skirt is shorter compared to previous games, and it looks like they gave the long skirt exclusively to her Red form. Yeah it’s not that much of a change compared to others. But to be fair most of the Melty Blood characters got some form of pretty small design tweaks in Type Luminus.

      @@MrInuhanyou123 Yeah, a friend kinda made me watch several of the Fate shows and while I didn't love everything, I came away from Unlimited Blade Works thinking that Arturia is a really cool idea and visual design.
      I'm just glad to have a fast-paced pixel-sprite anime fighter with a decent tutorial and rollback!

      @@JTown465 yeah I personally feel like the anime adaptions let fate down a lot despite having beautiful production values. Nasus penchant for writing stories just sells the content in a way that impossible to fully replicate in many other mediums I think, and that is especially true of fate stay night which is best read in visual novel form.
      Thankfully the tsukihime manga I think did a great job of doing certain things even better than the original tsukihime visual novel, partially because it was nasus first vn 20 years ago and also because the author of the manga adaption sakaki shounen did an overwhelming job exploiting the manga artform itself to best take advantage of the story.
      Nasu enjoyed the manga so much himself that he brought sakaki shounen back to do other manga adaptions of stories he wrote like tsuki no sango, and even officially brought him on as a creative lead on the tsukihime remake(not to mention cribbing a lot of scenes directly from the manga itself)

    Puede alguien decirme como es la jugabilidad?? Tiene autocombos??? O si es una jugabilidad ptofunda a la vieja escuela?? Es que no quiero comprarlo si tiene autocombos por que me decepsionaria.

      Tiene ambas cosas, puedes hacer autocombos pero estos no generarán ni el daño ni las aperturas para poder extenderlos, tiene jugabilidad profunda a la vieja escuela y uno de los más complejos por el sistemas de las lunas. Si piensas que tenga autocombos arruina un juego te recomiendo que es mejor dejar de pensar así y podrás disfrutar más los juegos, que haya autocombos no hará que los novatos del juego de repente sean jugadores de máximo nivel o que puedan vencer a un jugador experimentado (que ya conoce hacer parrys, cancels, counters, etc) , es una asistencia para que vayan comprendiendo el concepto de la combinación de ataques y quienes brinquen de la asistencia son quienes pulirán su juego.

      @@JMJAPO pues cada quien a mi en mi caso si me arruinan la experiencia los autocombos no se siente lo mismo, y por lo que me dices me hace dudar si comprarlo o no, por que ya me paso con el blazblue crostag y el dragon ball figterz ambos me decepsionaron no se siente la misma demencia al hacer los combos como en otros juegos de pelea.

    Tbh one reason I was skeptical about getting MBTL was the very generic character designs, after playing the game for a few days I can say that the bland designs don’t bother me at all, the game is actually so much fucking fun to play.
