    There's been some discourse in the FGC lately about Melty Blood's character designs. Some say they are generic, boring, etc, others love them. Today I'm going to be watching the character reveal gameplay trailers for the upcoming fighting game (based on the Tsukihime visual novel) and discussing my thoughts!

    I feel like people either forgot or just don't know to begin with that these are characters from a VERY old visual novel--they got some visual updates and there are some characters that are just wacky to begin with but like, shiki and arcueid weren't made for this specific genre. it's FINE

      The designs don't have to stay the same tho. Arcsys changed P3 characters in P4A.
      Hell, they already did changed one design in Lumina, Arc has shorter skirt. They should have done more, and make the cast look more interesting.

    The lore behind Ciel's "gun" is crazy (like many things Type-Moon). It's called the Seventh Holy Scripture and is a conceptual weapon, meaning it enforces a concept on its target in addition to physical damage. In her case, it is designed to kill immortals and prevent reincarnation by destroying its target's soul. Oh, and it's made from the horn of a unicorn and the spirit of a dead girl.

      @@asianjackass237 yeah but guilty gear plays in a completely different world setting than tsukiR/melty blood so comparing the two is pointless unless you specifically focus on char design and not any other factor on why the character looks like he does.
      Shiki tohno wanted to be a ordinary school boy but ended up being put in an abnormal situation.
      And while his looks are ordinary his story really is not at all and there is a lot to explore that lets you appreciate the characters far beyond their design.
      And well if you can't invest yourself into a char who looks ordinary without getting curious why he is there in the first place, then fair enough. The comment I made in the first place was to address that the game gets slandered and that people often us the character designs as an excuse to say like along the lines of the gameplay being ass or the game looking ugly and just slamming a community for it.

    Coming in with zero knowledge of the series or its extended universe, I think they all look clean as hell. The whole game looks clean and crisp including the backgrounds, lighting, animations, etc. _That's_ the uniqueness of the game: it _doesn't_ have insane characters. You want crazy looking characters? MK, SF, GG, KI, SC, Smash, Skullgirls, and more are happy to oblige. This is a 2D game with clean, normal looking characters. That's unique and thus, IMO, _not_ boring.
    Also, their "normal, boring designs" cleverly conceal their actual quirky personalities and gameplay. The maid uses furntiture to block and attack. The nun has a gatling gun under her habit. The sweater-wearing schoolgirl/princess dunks your face into the concrete after combos. The characters actually look great, their designs are distinguishable, and they still do crazy shit. This whole aesthetic is kind of a breath of fresh air. Or just different air. Am I allowed to love both the look of this and its polar opposite Guilty Gear Strive? Yes. And I do.
    Plus, with the large amount of room to move around on the screen and the various moves and options discussed here and elsewhere, it looks like it has the potential to have some very deep, rich, complex gameplay. And that's what's going to shine in these matches. Plus, the character designs are not going get in the way of that.

      The problem with the Tsukihime/Melty designs isn’t that they’re subdued. It’s that they’re generic early 2000’s visual novel designs, slightly spruced up. And Takeuchi’s art makes them all look extremely same face. And finally of course, no one cares about these characters, so visual design is the first thing that’s going to get criticized. Basically Shiki's Eyes allow him to see the Death of everything around him in the shape of lines and points. If he were to trace these lines on anyone or anything then he will slice it or "Kill" it. The problem is as you can imagine seeing the true fragility of the world puts a lot of stress on his mind (imagine bumping into someone and accidentally killing them). He wears those glasses to suppress the eyes so that he can't see the Lines of Death

Unfortunately for Melty though is that Takeuchi has been drawing the same faces for his characters for the past decade lol. I can tolerate it.. to an extent, since I'm super used to his style at this point and have an attachment to these characters regardless of the artstyle so I don't blame newcomers/onlookers writing these characters off as "boring-looking". I AM invested in these characters and acknowledge that these designs for these visual novel origin characters are supposed to make them unsupposing until they attempt to cut into your throat. Melty Blood is basically characters from a Visual Novel called Tsukehime. All the characters look kind of average at first glance because its set in modern Japan, however all the characters are basically Vampires, Werewolves, Church Warriors, Demonic Lineage, ect ect. The main character of the series is Shiki who after an accident found himself with Shinigami Eyes, which allows him to see the "lines" where things cease to be or "dies" He doesn't have a real knife he's using a fruit knife in combat. Because the sharpness of the knife doesn't matter as he's just tracing the lines of where things dies.
    Everyone in the game are superhuman, however they have normal looking character models because the fights happen suddenly in the "real world" thus they aren't dressed for battle per say they are dressed like what they are actually doing aka school work ect.

  • @nandobordas
    @nandobordas Před 3 lety +3

    Alright, where to begin with this... I'll try to (over)simplify it without hurting the lore too much.
    The character designs are plain because they're intended to be plain. Tsukihime (and by extension, Melty Blood) takes place in a suburban fantasy environment, where all sorts of supernatural crap is going on without the general public noticing. Shiki has an extremely powerful ability (the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, which you correctly compared to shinigami eyes) able to see lines and points in people and objects that he can effortlessly trace with his fruit knife (!) and bring about the destined destruction of said person or object. Arcueid is a Vampiric True Ancestor who's over a thousand years old; Ciel is an absurdly powerful freak of nature who's unable to die unless a specific someone else also dies, Akiha (Shiki's sister) has demon blood coursing through her veins, both maids (Hisui & Kohaku) have a very rare and sought-after power in their bloodline... And all this is the fuel for a sort of undercover demonic guerilla warfare going on in Misaki Town right under everybody's noses.
    I highly suggest you get into the entire lore of the Tsukihime series (Tsuki, Kagetsu Tohya, and at least MB:ReACT story mode and Act Cadenza Arcade endings) because it's an incredibly rich story with hugely interesting and captivating characters and twists everywhere.
    Source: been a fan of Tsukihime since around 2006, owned and played every single Melty Blood released up until now and have absolutely ZERO plans to stop.

  • @Zetact_
    @Zetact_ Před 3 lety +1

    I think it's three reasons. The simple clothing is a large part of it. There are many fighting games where people wear street clothes like KoF that have more interesting looks and convey personality through the character's fashion sense. That leads into the second part, instead of just street clothes, most of the cast wear stock uniforms. Compare and contrast Hisui and Kohaku - the maid uniforms tell a viewer nothing about them other than that they're maids. Shiki, Akiha, Satsuki, etc are similar, but "student uniform." In comparison even Aoko's ridiculous jeans and t-shirt conveys more about who she is than a stock uniform. Or you could look to something like Street Fighter - Karin wears a seifuku but it is this dynamic sports car red that sticks out since it's so different from the standard, and she also has things like her spats that tell you how she is always depressing for martial arts. The third reason is also really important and I think it's Takeuchi (artist for Type-Moon) having an extremely non expressive style especially since he stopped being able to draw women who aren't Saberfaces and the art is only making tiny facial changes for expressions that you can't even really notice in a match. Doesn't make your cast look interesting if it's mainly women and all the women have the same face with little ability to express emotion. Dragon Ball also has severe sameface but Toriyama's art is more exaggerated, for an example on what might be a problem with using Takeuchi.
    It is an issue regardless on whether the fans defend it or not. It's a fighting game, making a fast impression is very important. And if a new player doesn't find a character that they think is cool and unique, they can always just play a different game where there is someone who they find appealing.

    Tsukihime's characters (the novel that "created" all these characters") have the common tendency of showingg all the characters as bland and normal people, until the novel itself shows you how wrong you are, and they are most involved in supernatural threats in both sides, being the threats or defending the world for them. Also, most of the attacks show as much as they need to show that they are from THAT character, Shiki is a perfect example, those cuts are only single hits because of his "shinigami" eyes, he can just see death from all things and where he needs to cut to kill them (even objects in the novel), those things that appear while he hits the enemy with a regular beat or things like that are those lines, because shiki himself is aiming for that.

      Melty Bloody is a Tsukihime spin off game. Tsukihime is a classic Visual Novel by Type-Moon and the basis for all Nasuverse which would eventually give us the extremely successful Fate series. Because the main game is a visual novel all characters tend to have simple designs, as in Visual Novels you don't need to use flashy designs to detail a character, the thing is a virtual book. That's why the visuals are "boring".
      However because it's a visual novel the characters are much more fleshed out and have way more personality than a normal fighting game character. Who usually depends on visuals to tell each character's story and personality.

    • @bloody4558
      @bloody4558 Před 3 lety +2

      Basically it's a story about magic, mysticism, vampire's and Vampire hunters. The main character may look boring but he is a trained assassin, born in a special family that specializes in hunting demons and half-demons. Because of some events he lost his family and was adopted into a rich family, his adoptive sister is the current leader of the family and they live together, alone in that mansion alongside their two servants, the twin sisters you can see in the first trailer. Anyway, the whole thing about this series is that nothing is what it seems. The blonde girl may look like a free-spirited, happy girl, but she is in fact one of the True Ancestors, pretty much the real ancestors of all vampires, not only is she an ancient vampire she is also ludicrously powerful. If you know about Fate/Stay Night, all you need to know is that Arcueid at full power can easily take on all servants including Gilgamesh and defeat them in one blow as if they were children.
      Shiki also has a power that allows him to perceive the death of all that is deemed alive, using his enchanted dagger he can kill literally everything in a single hit, from animals, people to even immortal vampires, magic spells, castles. Almost everything.

      You cant modernize them too much cause they have pre existing legacy and you could end up making them look not like that previous character anymore, violating the original design phylosopy at the same time.
      They tried and some people complained, they changed Arcueid´s old fashioned big skirt to a stylish short one, which is out of character for her cause shes supossed to not care for her looks and has an old fashion way of dressing cause it hints at story stuff etc etc.
      Its just kinda awkward to change something when your designs are already minimalistic cause every change counts a lot, but hey, in modern FG every character tries really hard to look unique, and this is at least unique in the aspect that it doesnt.

    I want to start by saying that this ISN'T meant to be a hit piece on clone characters. I like how AACC is able to have such a massive roster with characters who play differently but share sprites, hell that's why the moon system was so cool.
    I think the issue with Melty Blood characters, at least in AACC, is how many characters look almost identical. Can you tell me the difference between Shiki Tohno and Shiki Nanaya? What about the fact that there are flat out 2 characters named Akiha Tohno? Not to mention Akiha Vermillion shares sprites with one of them. All the maids also look identical, the only visual thing to tell them apart easily is how many of them are on screen. And then there's Len and White Len, who also look very similar.
    Now granted, doing something on the scale of Order-Sol or Robo-Ky is pretty tough for a "clone" character. However, even different coloured effects would have gone a long way in making the characters look different. The game is several years old now though so not much that can be done. I don’t know anything about the VN MB is based on however I think the character designs are cool. It’s nice to see more simple characters sometimes. I appreciate the fact there seems to be a quirk to each of the characters. Like Shiki having a knife while looking so plain or Ciel having them sword things that she throws.
    I feel that you need designs like this in order to appreciate some of the more crazy designs you see in other fighters.It’s like having some really tasty vanilla ice cream it maybe be simple but it’s still tastes good nonetheless.

      That's not at all what Tsukihime is about.
      It's about vampires and serial killers. Stop spreading misinformation, it takes two seconds to use google.

      @@qualityexs6295 It's about vampires and others with supernatural abilities blending in to everyday life and being able to attack you, anywhere at any moment, the more plain designs that infer who the characters are more subtlety is definitely more in-line with Tsukihime's urban fantasy aesthetic

      @@saynai I wouldnt say that everyone has to play the VN but I think looking up basic lore is neat. Shiki uses a knife because he can carry it at any time in public, and his power allows him to visibly see "lines of death" in the fabric of reality, allowing him to kill immortal vampires and reincarnating foes by damaging their souls.

    Imo the gameplay looks hella sick and as someone who never got a chance to get into Unist I am very excited for this game...but outside of gameplay...the character designs are still milk toast and boring...
