  • This time I tackle some issues with the ABS Wheel Speed Sensor on my 2011 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen.
    The speed sensor was causing issues with the DSG not shifting properly as well as causing the ABS, Traction Control, TPMS, and Airbag error lights to come on.

    Here is a link to the sensor: amzn.to/3gm3nyS
    Make sure to get the correct one for the location on the vehicle.

    For all who have asked, the code reader I'm using is a Hex-V2 from Ross-Tech.com, software is their VCDS. Also known as VAG-COM.. These are specific to VAG vehicles and are well worth the investment if you have a VAG car that you plan to keep/work on for any length of time.

    Proud (and brave) owner of Scirocco 1.4 tsi petrol engine here...
    Hello! My testimony after this thorough and simple video (which I gratefully thank you for putting out!):
    - sensor replaced: lights still on;
    - magnetic ring wheel bearing replaced (it was needed and to further troubleshoot): lights still on.
    Since live data showed that rear left wheel sensor was soundingly collecting data and no diagnosis errors report other than right wheel:
    - Still need to check cables from rear left wheel up to abs control unit and if anomaly isn't from there, need to check fuses, voltage/power/etc from that end.
    ...this is an exhaustive process since I'm not a mechanic and these darn lights started their Christmas by themselves after 1 year of routine driving with no issue whatsoever...
    Hope still is intact but the headache factor of these little nothings that are of considerable number in VW systems and cars is starting to be very very annoying.

    • @VHickleGarage
      @VHickleGarage  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Very frustrating, I guess I got off easy with it only being the sensor. I'm a little confused though. . .If you're not getting any errors on the left side why check the wiring for that side? You did install the correct replacement sensor for location correct? . . .i.e. you didn't put a right front sensor on the right rear, etc?
      I've hear of the abs module itself going bad, but I have fortunately not had to deal with that issue.

    • @marcelosilva9429
      @marcelosilva9429 Před měsícem

      @@VHickleGarage maybe I fumbled my words.
      The error exists and reports the rear right wheel only.
      The driving data reports all three other sensors registering speed minus the rear right wheel.
      Hence the needed wiring inspection and (hopefully not for now) the ABS module revision.
      To answer your questions straight up: nope. The sensor is correctly installed.

    Had this happen to me today, I just had my tires changed and rotated 3 days prior to the Christmas tree so the mechanic probably got the sensor dirty or it just broke (49,000ish miles), I don't have any software to clear codes so its time to take it back to the shop.

    • @VHickleGarage
      @VHickleGarage  Před 3 lety +1

      From what I understand, it's a pretty common issue, so probably nothing the tire shop did. If you clean/replace the sensor the lights should go away without clearing the codes. If you're planning to keep the car a long time I would suggest investing in a VAG COM. One saved trip to the shop and it will pay for itself.

      Yes the speed sensor fixed my TPMS light. I know it's not true for all Vw's, but the sportwagen doesn't actually have TPMS sensors, it determines whether or not there's an issue based on the speed sensor input. At least I believe that's what I read when I first looked into it.

    What software are you using to read your Error codes? The Wheel sensor are Hall Effect sensors and work off of induction produced from the steel tone ring rotating. Dirt(road grime) on the outside of the sensor should not have any practical effect. A damaged tone ring is something that people should visually check right a way. Excessive Rust can cause them to fall apart. As long as there are no metal particles shorting out to ground, it should work. That would be a lot of metal particles.

      I'm using VCDS along with the appropriate VAG-COM from Ross Tech. You're right on cleaning. . . It didn't accomplish anything. Someone on one of the forums had suggested it, so I figured it was worth a try before buying a new sensor. There was a lot of crud on the old sensor, either way it was worth cleaning it all up before installing the new sensor.

Just keep a close eye on your wheel bearing, if it's making noise then you should replace that too. If it fails catastrophically then it can be very dangerous.

    Thank you for the video! I have the same lights coming on my 2012 Jetta SE and scanned it to find out my rear right ABS speed sensor is also malfunctioning. I feel the same transmission issues with gear hunting you described. However, I also hear this sound coming from under the car, best way I can describe it is as if a branch was caught underneath and being dragged on the road. It is not always present and it is rhythmic, increasing when I accelerate and decreasing when I brake. It also seems to be more present when turning. Is this something you experienced/Do you think replacing the speed sensor would fix this? Or is there a bigger issue with my brakes or wheel bearing?

    • @VHickleGarage
      @VHickleGarage  Před 2 lety

      That noise shouldn't be related to the speed sensor. Sounds like it's possibly a bearing or CV Joint (axles) issue. I have some bearing/CV noise as well that comes and goes. I know those are both common issues on these cars. I have all new stuff sitting in the garage, but I haven't gotten around to swapping them yet. If your noise is intermittent then it's probably not dire yet, but something to think about doing soon.
