At 72 years of age, I will NEVER forget Irene Cara. FAME, the film and the TV series was a huge part of my life. R.I.P. beautiful soul. So so so sad. I am pretty sure I had the album on 8 track and always played it in my car. NOBODY will forget her. 💙🙏❤️
Woke up to really sad news. R.I.P. Irene. 🙏😢💔 She was a part of my childhood and millions of others. She had amazing talent, the voice of an angel. Fly high beautiful angel, you’re going to ✨live forever✨ in so many hearts.
While much of my musical tastes go toward new wave and punk, I absolutely love this song and have since the first of the 50 or so times I have watched Fame. Thank you, Irene, for putting so much emotion and heart into this song. It's simply beautiful.
This is heartbreaking. She was one of my faves growing up. I don't know how many times I sang along to, "Out Here On My Own" on my 45. That song was on repeat as a kid. I loved Fame, first the movie, then the TV series. If you haven't seen the movie DC Cab, you should look it up. It was hilarious. A lot of great actors was in it including Ms. Irene Cara. She was a very gifted and talented woman and was wrongfully taken advantage of in the industry. Rest in Peace Ms. Cara! Your work will forever live on. 🙏🥺❤️
Irene’s death hit me harder than I thought it would. Hearing this song, which I’ve loved since I was a kid, reminds me of what’s missing in todays music & that’s real raw talent. This song made me cry when I first heard it. It touched me that much and it still does. The music and words are beautiful written by Lesley Gore and her brother. But for me it’s Irene Cara’s voice and interpretation that makes it so moving. No one like her. ❤
Same with me. I grew up listening to this. We sang selections from FAME when I was in the 4th grade in the early 80's. I learned how to play fame because of my Music teacher in grade school Mr Kephler. RIP to Irine Cara. Your Voice will always be a part of my music history. Such soul , such passion, . Growing up in the 80s as a little theater kid - this was (and is) the gold standard. I cannot even count how many auditions I did using this song and trying my best to sound as beautiful and heart-wrenching as Irene. She is a masterpiece and we will never forget your name, baby! 💕✨💕✨

So sad to hear we lost Irene Cara today. 11-25-22. She was such a beautiful talent and woman with such a beautiful voice. Thank you, Irene, for your light that shined in so many lives!!!❤️ R.I.P.
I just did. Not even close. Lacks a lot of Irene's raw power and emotion due basically to her young age, I hope she sings it again somewhere in the future.

Hard to believe she did this over 30 years ago. This song applies to each succeeding generation, so it never goes out of style. Irene Cara really did a great job.
"Out Here Own My Own..." has been my favourite & go to song since it was first released. I was a 10 year old boy who had just started training to be a classical ballet dancer. I have always loved this song since I was a little girl watching fame with my mom. Thank God for being an 80s baby! This is a true classic, I love her voice!
I've suffered a lot of hardship and loss in my life and have constantly revisited this song as a comfort. It takes me back to high school when I laughingly thought everything was the end of the world, to a kinder, innocent time. I will miss her not being in the world any longer. RIP and thank you for one of my favorite, go to, sad songs.
Dear friend, life can be tough often. And it's because of this that real artists like Irene are so important. She is still with us. Her voice, her beauty, her generosity, her truth. Sending good thoughts. Many blessings. 🙏
Un día de mi juventud, encendi mi tv. en blanco y negro me puse a mirar FAMA y la vi por primera vez . Desde ahí nunca mas dejé de verla y escucharla. How my heart breaks for this beautiful talented, God blessed woman! These songs I will never forget. I was just a teenager and when you made your self known for your huge talent. All these years later, your songs are on my phone. God bless you and RIP beautiful lady!
Rest in peace Irene. What a Flawless voice you had...and this was one of my absolute favorite songs, wondering if I fit in growing up - like most of us do
Rest In Peace, Irene Cara. I came here as soon as I heard. Out Here On My Own has gotten me through some tough times over the years. Thank you, Irene. Get your rest, love.
An underrated talent gone too soon! This song was so beautiful and got us through so many trials in life. Rest Irene, and thank you sooo much! Well done!👏🏽👏🏽
Beautiful voice, beautiful song, beautiful soul. This song was etched into my teenage heart opening night at the movie theatre & is just as relevant today as it was then. Gone too soon. Rest in peace Irene Cara.
This is one of those songs that no matter how old, no matter how many times you have heard it, no matter where you are. It just makes you feel something wonderful & some what emotional because it has that magic that a beautiful song is suppose to do and make you feel. It puts you through so many feelings just enjoy the time and take it all in because it's only going to last maybe 3 minutes but it is a wonderful 3 minutes experience that only a great classic song can make you feel. Where would we be without music!
Rest in eternal peace 🕊 🕊🕊🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 I sung this song at my grade school talent show. You were a truly a talented entertainer. I loved you especially in "Sparkle"
Just heard the heartbreaking news Irene Cara has passed away today aged 63. I was 16 years old when "FAME" was showing at the Cinema. RIP Miss Cara, you will be sadly missed. 😥 💔🙏⚘
May the Angels welcome you into their Heavenly choir.... We already know you will be out front with your exquisite voice.. Rest in peace Irene... I have always been a big fan.... Maybe someday after I pass I can catch your act...
I agree that she should've been a megastar , she could sing and she was gorgeous but when you get hooked on cocaine , it just sidetracked and shortened her career . Shes doing fine now but that was her time .
She didn't have a much bigger career because she didn't sell her soul. She was too smart and knew she was being cheated by the record company hence the lawsuit. Of course the drugs didn't help but they all did drugs. Unfortunately the industry is full of those like that creep in the film who told Coco to undress herself and stick her thumb in her mouth. She ended up being blacklisted. While she did have 3 top then hits, her albums didn't sell very well which didn't help matters either. It's a damn shame because of her talent. She could have been huge
This song has always been my favourite of hers and listening to it now, brings tears to my eyes knowing you passed away a few days ago. Felt like a part of my childhood passed away as well. Every boy's crush back in school. A rare talent with an angelic face and voice to match. Your music lives on. RIP Irene Cara.
As a 20 yr old, I saw this in Australia in 1980 with a young Sydneysider I'd just met. We spent 3 fabulous weeks together before I had to return to the UK. If, by fluke, you're reading this Leanne Holland, I've never forgotten you.
What else did Michael and Leslie Gore write? This was a masterpiece. Right up there with anything Bacharach and David ever composed. And Irene Cara's beautiful voice did their composition justice.
This is such a beautiful song. I remember seeing this movie in the theater right before my High School graduation in 1980. Thank you for this, for Fame, for What a Feeling, and all the music. Rest In Peace Irene Cara 🙏🏻🌹
RIP Irene. God bless your beautiful soul. Thank you for inspiring me with your music when I was a child in the 80’s. Your music will live on forever 💐🙏
Beautiful lyrics by Lesley Gore and her brother ,,but Irene's voice of that pretty song is simply one word,, Sensational ,, after all these years and i am 57 years old,,it still chills me everytime i hear it Well Done Irene Dougie W.Australia
I woke up this morning to the announcement of her passing. Since then, I have gone down the rabbit hole that is Twitter. Watched her music videos, performances, & acting credits. Remembering myself as a kid singing Fame at the top of my lungs even though I was much too young to see the movie when it came out. When the 80's had very few minority representation in the movies, she was mine. RIP Irene Cara. Rest In Peace.
You inspired me and so I actually became a musical performer. Until this day I reckon this is one of the most powerful performances in a musical. Just you, your voice and the piano. R.I.P. 18.03.1959-25.11.2022
I remember playing this song for my late cousin in the 198's. I feel like I lived every word of this. And so many years later I am still out here ALL ALONE.
Clearly written from Lesley Gore's heart. She meant every word of it, and Irene Cara delivers every nuance - real and powerful, feel it deeply. Incredible vocal ! Amazing song!
One of my favorite songs. I remember she came to my university in the 80's to teach dance. I got out my SLR camera and took a picture of her sitting on the floor, which I still have. RIP Irene
Fond memories of this song….. We lost Leslie Gore today who had a string of hits in the mid 60's but penned this beautiful song with her brother…In 1979 I was sitting in the auditorium of the old Haren High School on 10th Ave in NYC where we filmed part of FAME…Lunch time so I stopped to eat my lunch in this beautiful Beaux Arts Auditorium that was built in the early 1900's..75 years later, this beautiful building had been abandoned for new digs and became available for filming purposes & became the much of the school, standing in for the School of Performing Arts & sciences. The auditorium was pretty exquisite with skylights that let in natural light but during WW2 had been painted over in preparation for a possible homeland attack and now 35 years later in 1979, the paint was falling away and letting streams of light in…As I sat there alone in the auditorium that had a piano on stage for the film who walks in to rehearse ON HER OWN? Irene Cara.. So I got a little performance…not bad for a 24 year old guy , working as a set dresser having his boxed lunch having a half hour to kill…. As the light streamed in and Irene played on the piano and sang..I just sat and listened to what eventually became part of that famous soundtrack released the next year for FAME….RIP Leslie Gore..This was your party. Thanks for some great music..It WILL live forever….
George DeTitta Great story!...it's those moments that make life worth living...and that song and her performance give me chills...especially when I've been out there on my own.
And this morning I learned of her passing. Another incredible light has gone out. Yes, no one has ever sung this song with the passion that she has shared. RIP Irene Cara. You will be missed.

Sometimes I wonder where I've been,
Who I am,
Do I fit in.
Make believein' is hard alone,
Out here on my own.
We're always provin' who we are,
Always reachin'
For that risin' star
To guide me far
And shine me home,
Out here on my own.
When I'm down and feelin' blue,
I close my eyes so I can be with you.
Oh, baby be strong for me;
Baby belong to me.
Help me through.
Help me need you.
Until the morning sun appears
Making light
Of all my fears,
I dry the tears
I've never shown,
Out here on my own.
But when I'm down and feelin' blue,
I close my eyes so I can be with you.
Oh, baby be strong for me;
Baby, belong to me.
Help me through.
Help me need you.
Sometimes I wonder where I've been,
Who I am,
Do I fit in.
I may not win,
But I can't be thrown,
Out here on my own,
Out here on my own.

Noreen, I hope that you are doing much better. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Dear friend, life can be tough often. And it's because of this that real artists like Irene are so important.
She is still with us. Her voice, her beauty, her generosity, her truth.
Sending good thoughts.
Many blessings.
🙏
RIP Irene Cara ❤️ Now you will live forever, you've made it to heaven, and people will remember your name! 🙏
Shame they don't write songs like this one anymore....Love Irene.
I know. I am moved to tears every time I hear Irene sing this song.
Rest in peace beautiful woman. While "Fame" got all of the attention, to me, this-Her other Oscar nominated treasure was the real hidden gem.

Love Irene Cara's voice and her song!😍😍😍
Yes.....just a piano and a voice. This is music! Perfect!
Agreed completely. And what a song
Agreed!! The piano & Irene's voice -- epic & perfect. No cover has yet to touch this amazing original.
Rest In Peace, Irene Cara. I came here as soon as I heard. Out Here On My Own has gotten me through some tough times over the years. Thank you, Irene. Get your rest, love.
R.I.P irene cara.....that song is pure in its meaning, whether on stage or in life. Thank you.
Perfect vocals. Great melody and lyrics. Great piano. Great memories of better times.
Rest easy Irene, this will always be my favorite song that you blessed us with
An underrated talent gone too soon!
RIP Irene Cara...my god what a talent, this song will always be one of the most beautiful ever written.
Rest in eternal peace 🕊 🕊🕊🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I sung this song at my grade school talent show. You were a truly a talented entertainer. I loved you especially in "Sparkle"
Thank you, Irene, for being a part of the soundtrack of my life.
Rest in peace, Coco.
After so many years this song is still beautiful and true being on your own.
I was a kid when “Fame” was released and I fell in love with the movie-especially Irene Cara’s voice. Brilliant.
Exceptional. The talents in that movie really did GIVE IT THEIR ALL! Breathtakingly Gifted.
She should have had a MUCH bigger career ! Lovely song, still holds up 34 years later.
I agree that she should've been a megastar , she could sing and she was gorgeous but when you get hooked on cocaine , it just sidetracked and shortened her career . Shes doing fine now but that was her time .

37 yes later as well
Arthur Seymore Jr., is that what really stopped her? Do you feel her lawsuit against the record company was justified?
What a TALENTED all-around artist. May she rest in peace.
What else did Michael and Leslie Gore write? This was a masterpiece. Right up there with anything Bacharach and David ever composed.
And Irene Cara's beautiful voice did their composition justice.
This classic of a song didn't get the recognition it deserved at the time. RIP Irene Cara 🙏
This is such a beautiful song. I remember seeing this movie in the theater right before my High School graduation in 1980. Thank you for this, for Fame, for What a Feeling, and all the music. Rest In Peace Irene Cara 🙏🏻🌹
Never heard an angel sing but her voice is angelic.
RIP Irene. I've always loved this song. Just reminds me of a simpler timeline long gone. Thank you for your talent and you'll always be remembered....
RIP Irene. God bless your beautiful soul. Thank you for inspiring me with your music when I was a child in the 80’s. Your music will live on forever 💐🙏
My favorite one from Irene... Rest in Peace dear Irene... And thank you for the music, your memory will remain...
Beautiful lyrics by Lesley Gore and her brother ,,but Irene's voice of that pretty song is simply one word,,
Sensational ,, after all these years and i am 57 years old,,it still chills me everytime i hear it
Well Done Irene

I woke up this morning to the announcement of her passing. Since then, I have gone down the rabbit hole that is Twitter. Watched her music videos, performances, & acting credits. Remembering myself as a kid singing Fame at the top of my lungs even though I was much too young to see the movie when it came out. When the 80's had very few minority representation in the movies, she was mine. RIP Irene Cara. Rest In Peace.
R.I.P Irene. This song meant a lot to me starting out.
We will miss you Irene Cara. You will be loved and listened to forever. Many thanks for your great music full of emotions. R.I.P.
beautiful song. she is biracial butterfly. mariah looked up to her. irene should have been wayyy bigger. underrated queen
Oh , those big, fat, delicious piano chords meshed with that magnificent and powerful voice! Heaven!
You inspired me and so I actually became a musical performer.
Until this day I reckon this is one of the most powerful performances in a musical. Just you, your voice and the piano.
R.I.P.

Rest in peace, Ms. Cara. Thank you for the beautiful music. ❤️
Can I copy this and quote it?
Always my favorite song by Irene. Rest in heavenly peace, and yes, we will remember your name ❤️
Same… great post.
Beautiful story, George... thank you for sharing with us!!
George DeTitta Great story!...it's those moments that make life worth living...and that song and her performance give me chills...especially when I've been out there on my own.
Nice stuff George...
with this story you are bringing to the surface strong emotions just like how i felt when i watched fame
Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful memories!!
Woke up with this in my head. Had to listen. We did this play in high school and the memories remain so vivid
Irene Cara passed away today. :(
