    I would have liked to have seen more of the actual construction of the door, rather, (although very important),than the companies delivery and Co2 emissions.

      Yes I was interested in where the wood is sourced, how thick is the veneer, whats 'in the middle' CNC's in action, but informative

      @adie chip Indeed. Spot on. I think many of us are naive about the globalisation of manufacturing. I just got my XLJoinery door delivered today and it is made in Indonesia. I wonder what the door costs XL. I know I paid almost £500 for my Tricoya. Probably the cost of the door not so different to the mark-up by the distributor.

      Funny but I'd never heard of this company but my daughter and partner are buying a new house which is still under construction and they've just fitted XL oak Suffolk doors. Then this video popped up.

    Aren't they just a warehouse for imported doors which they finish off and charge you a premium.

    Something i thought David may have mentioned (maybe he did off camera) is that XL doors are now supplying solid oak doors throughout it may only be the Suffolk and Palermo range they do in this though if i remember.
    Can't wait to see which door and handles you go for.

    Are the doors built in Asia and just finished in the UK?

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  Před 4 lety +3

      yes, some of the doors are from SE Asia but they sell softwood doors which are made closer to home. It makes sense to make the doors close to the source of the timber.

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  Před 4 lety

      @adie chip This is a great disussion and I am sure that XL would not shy away from the debate. Given that the doors are brought in on container ships which have a very low tonnage cost per mile they might be able to make a case for bringing them in from SE Asia. If they came from France or maybe Croatia by road it would probably carry a higher carbon penalty.
      There is a lot to consider but they are serious about reducing carbon, they look at everything.

  • @josoapification
    @josoapification Před 4 lety +2

    First question regarding carbon footprint of the company
    Does all the timber you use come from a sustainable source?
    I am a joiner and actually hate seeing trees being cut from unsustainable sources mainly talking about hardwoods solid hardwoods are crazy prices now I was hanging solid teak doors in a restaurant in London they were beautiful but they were £1200 per door
    As much as I love the real thing man made laminates and veneers look nearly as nice

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  Před 4 lety +4

      It is a great shame to see trees cut down but we have to accept that people living in the rain forest have the same needs as all of us. They want to feed their families and thrive. Managing forests and replanting in any forest is essential and most importers are using FSC certified timber, but to simply stop using all timber from these areas means they have nothing to live on. Put yourself in their place and you would probably do the same.

      @SkillBuilder  Před 4 lety +10

      There is crap out there which is why Robin went to see the products. He is happy that this is high end. Making 20 hardwood doors to this standard would take some doing and cost a lot more.you have to get real at some point.

  • @allansolomon2137
    @allansolomon2137 Před 4 lety

    Well that was not what I expected. So they buy there doors in and QC inspects every door before it goes in the rack. So they 100 % inspect quality in. Bit labour intensive. What do they do with failures? So who makes the doors then and how are they constructed. Who machines the sections for the door frames? Are they all mdf and cardboard. Any joints in them at all? Where is the hardwood veneer sourced from. Hopefully there will be a part 2 to follow

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  Před 4 lety +1

      The doors in quality control are bespoke specials. The stock doors come from joinery shops close to the raw materials. In the case of hardwood it is from fsc forests in the tropics. Good to check this before buying. We hoped to see some fabrication. Maybe we should take one apart to have a look.

      @@SkillBuilder i can send you some photos of some door bottoms i have cut off in the past, these were rooster doors 😉
      I saved them because even though they were the same name, some same size they were constructed differently.
      I know similar company's like Xl import from several country's around the world, hence the changes in the way they are constructed.
